Cold winters, hot summers--year after year the seasons repeat themselves. But what causes them?

Why is there winter in the Southern Hemisphere at the same time there is summer in the Northern Hemisphere? In summertime, why is it still light out in the evening? With simple language appropriate for young readers, non-fiction master Gail Gibbons introduces young readers to the four seasons and explains why they change throughout the year.

Newly revised and vetted by experts, this updated edition of
The Reasons for Seasons introduces the solstices, the equinoxes, and the tilt in Earth's axis that causes them, and gives examples of what each season is like across the globe from pole to pole. Clear, simple diagrams of the earth's orbit are labeled with important vocabulary, explained and reinforced with accessible explanations.

Fascinating and easy to understand, this is a perfect introduction to seasons, earth's orbit, and axial tilt. Different effects on different parts of the world are included, illustrating the difference in climate between the equator, the northern and southern hemispheres, and the polar regions.

Gail Gibbons’s books are particularly accurate because she goes right to the source when researching a topic. She has been on the seventeenth floor of a skyscraper in progress, has spoken with truck drivers about the workings of their rigs, has dismantled every clock in her home, and would have donned scuba diving gear to research a sunken ship had the sea waters not been too turbulent. Gail says "I had a lot of ‘whys’ when I was a child. I guess I still do."

Wonderful info well presented for 6 - 10 year olds.

Item arrived earlier than expected in excellent condition. My two year old is fascinated and listens attentively even though I think the concepts are be way too advanced for him to grasp. I was surprised when he asked to hear it again after his nap and said " It's a Good Book!" when we finished.
Clearly he doesn't understand everything; there are many abstract concepts like the rotation of the earth on its axis and the rotation of the earth around the sun, but he does relate to the pictures and the information about the seasons which he is experiencing, like snow and the cold of winter.
He also is a word sponge and repeats everything he hears. There's lots of new vocabulary to enjoy here!

My 6 year old grandson loves viewing documentaries about storms and weather changes so I thought this book would help his understanding of the seasons. My daughter says he likes the book a lot.

Great book. Love Gail Gibbons.

Arrived bent because it was shipped in a poly mailer. Don’t want to deal with the hassle of returning it. Please stop shipping books in flimsy poly mailers.

Fabulous book with just the right amount of information for my first grade students. The pictures are bright and colorful with the right balance between interesting to look at and simple enough to understand.

My three year old son is learning about seasons in school. We are skipping the parts about the positioning of the earth and the sun. He will be able to increase his understanding as he gets older.
