Dessert for Two takes well-loved desserts and scales them down to make only two servings!

Who doesn't love towering three-layer cakes with mounds of fluffy buttercream? Who can resist four dozen cookies fresh from the oven? Wouldn't you love to stick your spoon into a big bowl of banana pudding? But what about the leftovers? Dessert recipes typically serve eight to ten people. Finding the willpower to resist extra slices of cake can be difficult; the battle between leftover cookies and a healthy breakfast is over before it starts. Until now.

Dessert for Two
takes well-loved desserts and scales them down to make only two servings. Cakes are baked in small pans and ramekins. Pies are baked in small pie pans or muffin cups. Cookie recipes are scaled down to make 1 dozen or fewer. Your favorite bars―brownies, blondies, and marshmallow–rice cereal treats―are baked in a loaf pan, which easily serves two when cut across the middle.

Newly married couples and empty-nesters will be particularly enthralled with this miniature dessert guide. To everyone who lives alone: now you can have your own personal-sized cake and eat it, too.

Review

'Christina creates the most lovely small batch comforts! This book is bound to be bookmarked and butter-stained in my kitchen in no time." -Joy Wilson, author of Joy the Baker Cookbook

From the Author

I was born and raised just outside Dallas and I come from a long line of hardworking farmers. My maternal grandparents were cotton farmers in north Texas, and my dad's family grew tobacco in the Carolinas. Southern food and farming runs through my veins like white whiskey. When I first had the idea to take regular recipes and scale them down to make fewer servings, I attempted to reduce Texas Chocolate Sheet Cake to two small ramekins and it was disastrous: eggy and sunken in the middle. I learned baking really is a science, and you can't just switch around ingredients and pan sizes will-nilly. But little by little, I learned and made progress. Plain chocolate chip cookies were mastered (the perfect butter-to-flour ratio took months). I mastered four vanilla cupcakes and then made many variations. Then one day, I came across a 6-inch cake pan at the hobby store, and I knew Dessert For Two was going to be a big part of my life.I hope these recipes for small batches of desserts satisfy your cravings just right. I hope married couples put this book to use and grow closer 1/3 cup of chocolate chips at a time. I hope this book is a welcome addition to empty nesters: a way to still have dessert without the leftovers. And most of all, to everyone who lives alone: You should have your own personal-size cake and eat it, too.

Outrageously Good
I saw this cookbook recommended on Facebook, and I checked it out. The fact that we both watch what we eat but still want to indulge a little every now and then drew me right into this beautifully illustrated cookbook. Instead of baking a “normal” recipe that makes a lot of servings, these recipes make enough for two people. I usually give portions of my baked goods away so I won’t have them around to tempt me...yes, even freezing goodies don’t deter us! So the hard part was deciding which recipe to try first. Once I turned to the Oatmeal Cream Pies recipe on page 30, I knew I found where to begin. I followed the recipe and ended up with six sandwich cookies instead of five like the recipe called for. The recipe came together easily. I was pleasantly surprised at the generous size of the cookies. Then the taste test...OMG! Beyond my expectations! We had a friend over for dinner the next night, and he thought they actually tasted better than the original you use to buy in the store. For this recipe alone you should buy this book. I’m ready to try another recipe. You are welcome!

I love to bake, but with it just being my Husband and I most recipes make too much. Sadly we'll eat it anyway. I found this book and have made four recipes so far. The recipes are smart and the pictures appetizing. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and the portion sizes are excellent.

The butter cookies were easy to make. Do let the bottoms get very brown, usually I would pull cookies early but to get the best taste you need to follow her directions until the cookies look like the picture. Excellent flavor. Since they use a yolk, save the whites in a baggie in the freezer and later on you can make other treats.

chocolate cookie brownies were fantastic. I loved the meringue feeling of the cookies with the crunchy crackling outside and chewy center. The chocolate was just this side of almost bitter with a strong taste, I liked it a lot, but you could sprinkle confectioner's sugar over them if you like a slightly sweeter taste.

The caramel cake was easy to make. I bought a Fat Daddio's 6 inch cake pan and it made the perfect little cake. The icing takes work, caramel icing does, big cake or little, but it was a great wow factor.

Who doesn't like chocolate peanut butter brownies. Using a loaf pan for the brownies is so smart as it makes excellent small batches. The chocolate brownie is fudgy and rich and the peanut butter swirl marbled through the batter is the perfect amount. Using the microwave makes the mixing fast.

This is a book I will use again and again, it is perfect and we have our dessert and eat it "two"

I was really impressed just reading through this collection of recipes! We're an older couple, so it's nice to be able to enjoy dessert recipes made just for two when the urge strikes, and this recipe book was worth the wait. I'd really rather make than buy my desserts...

I first tried the German Chocolate Cake; I instinctively tweaked the leavening and flour in the recipe for the chocolate cake itself since I live at a high altitude; made note of those changes and the cake came out beautifully. I used Hershey's 'Special Dark' cocoa for the cocoa originally called for in the cake itself and the flavor was amazing. My husband, not ordinarily much of a cake eater even of his favorite (which happens to be German chocolate), eventually finished it entirely! That success has motivated me to think that maybe it really is possible to have homemade cake even at high altitudes. It's also really great to know that in making these desserts, we won't be stuck having to eventually throw them out because there's just too much. The cake lasted us three days, including the day I made and served it initially, just right for us.

I'll be trying other recipes throughout the summer; those lemon 'puddin' cakes' look like they'd be refreshing served chilled with whipped cream atop as a summer dessert and I look forward to trying them with lime and orange citrus as well. They're next on the 'must try' list. Those more fitted to fall and winter will just have to wait their turn, LOL.

These desserts are much better than the individual servings found in the grocery store and don't take hours to make, another point in its favor.

Thanks so much for a really good collection!

I read a lot of cookbooks, and I love a lot of cookbooks, but it's been a couple of years since I bought one that I know in my heart I could easily use EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

Dessert for Two is everything I wanted it to be. The portions (just 2!) are generous enough to make the recipes not feel like a "diet" book, while automatically building in portion control. And all of that is fabulous. But what was really important to me - are the recipes actually *good* - well no, they're not. They're AMAZING.

As a fellow Texan, I found Christina's conversational tone and directions familiar and easy to read. And it made my heart sing to see pralines, divinity, pecans galore, and use of the word y'all. So far my favorite recipe in the bunch is the Brownies for Two. I used a mixture of King Arthur Flour's black cocoa and Ghirardelli's unsweetened cocoa powder to please my dark chocolate loving husband's heart, and zing - did I!

I also love that the majority of recipes could easily be doubled or tripled to make "regular" sized desserts, for when you're having company. To me, that makes it two books in one, and quite a bargain at that.

The photos are gorgeous and plentiful. Not going to lie, this book could easily also double as a coffee table book, the photos are that good. I already sent a copy to my mama, since it's just her and my dad. Dad has diabetes, but is allowed a sweet treat now and then. My mom wasn't making them, simply because she couldn't deal with having the leftovers around to tempt him. She is SO excited about this concept. Buy this book - you're going to love it.

I’ve been struggling to make a good pie crust and usually failing. This book is great because I don’t waste as much on each attempt. It also lets me try out new flavors without having a bunch of leftovers to throw away if we don’t like the recipe.

What a great variety of recipes!! Perfect portions!! As a single girl who loves baking, I can sincerely appreciate a cookbook like this one! I love having dessert a few times per week but do not want to be stuck with a huge cake to eat, or having to freeze batches of cookies all the time!

Really pleased with this lovely book. I can still make cakes for my husband and I without feeling guilty about eating too much, as both of our children have left home. I have only tried two of the recipes so far, but both were a success. Looking forward to trying the rest! 😃

3.0 out of 5 stars The end product is not all that good
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 29, 2020
I have tried a couple of recipes and was not overwhelmed by the end product. The cupcakes came out a bit tough and without much flavour. They were made with plain flour and baking soda and no butter. I am not bothered at all bothered where my recipes come from as long as they work and are tasty. This book is though is very USA. but not in a nice way. The end product came out a bit on the industrial quick bake spectrum.

Everything one could ask for in a cookbook! It has wonderful pictures, clear instructions and absolutely delicious recipes. There were a couple of ingredients which were not available, however, the quality of this cookbook totally made up for that. I'm giving this book a " two thumbs up."
