AS SEEN ON GOOD MORNING AMERICA!
ONE OF TEEN VOGUE'S 25 BOOKS BY BLACK AUTHORS THEY CAN'T WAIT TO READ THIS YEAR
ONE OF BETCHES' "22 BOOKS YOU NEED TO READ THIS YEAR"
"As a fan of Grey’s Anatomy (and Chicago Med!), I couldn’t put down On Rotation, and you won’t be able to, either. Shirlene Obuobi makes you feel as if you’re actually right there with the lovable Angie, and I personally couldn’t get enough."—Meg Cabot, New York Times bestselling author
For fans of Grey’s Anatomy and Seven Days in June, this dazzling debut novel by Shirlene Obuobi explores that time in your life when you must decide what you want, how to get it, & who you are, all while navigating love, friendship, and the realization that the path you’re traveling is going to be a bumpy ride.
Ghanaian-American Angela Appiah has checked off all the boxes for the “Perfect Immigrant Daughter.”
- Enroll in an elite medical school
- Snag a suitable lawyer/doctor/engineer boyfriend
- Surround self with a gaggle of successful and/or loyal friends
But then it quickly all falls apart: her boyfriend dumps her, she bombs the most important exam of her medical career, and her best friend pulls away. And her parents, whose approval seems to hinge on how closely she follows the path they chose, are a lot less proud of their daughter. It’s a quarter life crisis of epic proportions.
Angie, who has always faced her problems by working “twice as hard to get half as far,” is at a loss. Suddenly, she begins to question everything: her career choice, her friendships, even why she's attracted to men who don't love her as much as she loves them.
And just when things couldn’t get more complicated, enter Ricky Gutierrez—brilliant, thoughtful, sexy, and most importantly, seems to see Angie for who she is instead of what she can represent.
Unfortunately, he’s also got “wasteman” practically tattooed across his forehead, and Angie’s done chasing mirages of men. Or so she thinks. For someone who’s always been in control, Angie realizes that there’s one thing she can’t plan on: matters of her heart.

“On Rotation by Shirlene Obuobi is part rom-com, part coming-of-age story—a book so full of life that I badly missed Angie, Obuobi's protagonist, the moment I finished. It's been a rough couple of years for all of us, so scoop up this completely delightful debut for a shot of joy.” — Marie Claire
"Obuobi's debut features a winning cast of characters who alternatively help and hinder Angie, whose first-person narration is warm and relatable...Obuobi ably navigates plot twists and emotional turns while addressing millennial angst and issues facing Black women. "Author Obuobi, a physician and cartoonist, is in her wheelhouse chronicling the hectic, and sometimes solitary, life of a medical student. The often witty footnotes, frequently describing medical jargon or Ghanaian traditions, add an amusing flair to Angie’s personality, but the novel’s true strength shines in its more serious moments... Guaranteed to make your heart beat faster." — Kirkus Reviews

This is a story about Angie and Ricky, two people who are (allegedly) destined to be together.
Not gonna lie, I was mad at Ricky for most of the book, and I absolutely hate how Angie blamed herself for their COMBINED issues. Ricky was a whole you know what, from start to finish, and I was not here for it. Still am not.
That said, I know it’s a romance, so I GUESS I have to forgive him. (But I don’t.)
The writing is masterful. I laughed and cussed at the characters. This was the first book that I tried to comfort the characters with my notes. I cried during the hardest parts. Like a strong thug tear. These characters put me THROUGH IT.
This was also the first romance where I didn’t completely agree with the HEA. Angie sitting on her couch solo dolo, drinking wine, was a whole MOOD. But whateva.
10/10, strongly and highly recommend. I will most likely read it again (and yell at Ricky again).
1) the protagonist, Angie’s, experiences as a Ghanaian-American—getting a peek into her family culture, rituals, and values was a real treat. I loved learning about how being Ghanaian-American, as well as Black, impacted her experiences as a medical student, a woman, a human being walking through the world.
2) Angie’s experience as a third year medical student. I learned so much about what the rigors of medical school are like!
I also resonated with this story of young-ish love, filled as it often is with miscommunication, and just getting to know how someone else operates.
All of the relationships—friendships, parent-child relationships, romantic relationships—felt real to me. Sometimes frustratingly so! (No! Don’t respond that way!)
I hope Obuobi keeps writing! I’ll keep reading what she writes!

The sheer volume of footnotes was frustrating, it disrupted the flow.
As for the protagonists, as much as I tried, I found Angie unbearable. She was neurotic, judgmental, difficult, selfish and self centered. It made it difficult to connect with her and route for her to get the man. As for Ricky, he was too kind, allowing Angie to walk all over him. He really needed a backbone. Yes she helped with his dad, but he helped her a lot before. She barely apologized before it was all good.
I Love that the main character Angie had a great circle of friends who kept her in check, parents who loved her even though could be overbearing and a no-nonsense sibling.
I admired her resilience in achieving her goals despite the odds. It is often not easy in real life.
Really pleased she met Ricky and wonder if there are men like him in real life. It sounds like they are fairytale but happy Angie bagged herself a good man.
My frustrations came with the protagonist who found every reason to mistrust Ricky and push him away. Everyone could see he was amazing but then again, maybe that's the point. You can start acting irrationally when you really love someone and are afraid of being hurt.
