I'll make this review short, as there is already plenty of technical and practical material available throughout the web on the matter.
In one word, it's a powerhouse.
I'd qualify my use as that of a landscape photographer, so I'm mostly interested in "all things IQ" (DR, colours, resolution, sharpness), ease of use while outdoors (and with possibly semi-frozen hands), comfort for composing shots and checking that they should be "technically correct" (focus, exposure, level, etc.).
Let's say that on all three counts it's the best camera I've used so far.
* IQ is just incredible. I've been used to Nikon files for a while now, but those ISO 64 RAW files are just astoundingly good, they offer incredible flexibility and the colours are gorgeous. I do most of my editing in Adobe LR with a bit of PS and everything goes very smoothly.
Of course, it comes with additional shooting discipline (due to the larger resolution), but a tripod + EFCS or the electronic shutter help immensely here. Just don't go in expecting perfect 45MP files while shooting like on a 12MP or 24MP body. Same goes for lenses, 45MP is taxing and some highly praised lenses (like the 24-70 f/2.8G) just don't cut it if you want absolute sharpness.
* I'm overall very satisfied with the ease of use. The build quality is great and buttons placement is almost perfect. The right-hand part and directional pad could still probably be improved, but frankly it's just the same one as on previous Nikon body so nothing unexpected. I've used it in various kinds of weathers, from so-damn-hot-and-humid to damn-it-i'm-freezing-cold, and I don't have much to say apart from the fact it performed admirably well.
I must probably warn, if it isn't obvious from the technical spec sheet, that the camera is pretty large and heavy, so if like me you "like" to carry a heck of a lot of gear to the top of mountains, just know that you have to pay a price for all this IQ goodness.
* Shooting comfort has been improved since previous D8xx bodies, and the tilting touch-screen is a better addition than I expected. The tilting screen is obviously a great thing for landscapes, unless you compose everything at eye-level, but the addition of a touch-screen makes the focus selection process a lot faster, which is great. Fiddling with the directional pad is now a thing of the past. The focus highlighting is a nice addition, especially for MF lenses.
Apart from that, we get the usual package: live-view level and histogram simulation, same old but still functional. I'm a bit baffled by the very limited implementation of their live-view dual focus screen, so I didn't find much use for it.
I use this body alongside a D750, and they're a wonderful duo that I can trust in almost every situation. As far as landscape photography is concerned, the D850 is an outstanding piece of equipment.
