It could be a translation issue, but the description calls these watercolor crayons. They are not - not in any meaningful sense. I tried them on several different kinds of paper (hot press, cold press, mixed media, 100% cotton, cellulose, blend, and simple craft paper. They did not dissolve in water on any of those surfaces. They are far too sticky to dissolve without a vigorous scrub, and when I used my stiffest brush, it simply lifted all the wax and still did not dissolve it. All I got in terms of color payout was a very thin watery wash that was barely more pigmented than wet wax crayon water would be. Which leads me to think that “watercolor” translation is wrong (or that perhaps I was sent the wrong set? I can’t read Japanese so I don’t know).
That sounds like I am unhappy with my purchase. But it turns out I am quite happy with it. I have been wishing for a good wax pastel to replace my Neocolor I crayons when I want a resist in my sketchbooks. I’m trying to save those pricey Caran D’Ache darlings for work that will be displayed and needs lightfast and archival materials. As it happens, these fill that gap surprisingly well.
They feel almost like Sennelier oil pastels in the lay down, perhaps a little less smooth. The wax is very soft and sticky, but not necessarily in a bad way. It lives somewhere between a wax crayon and an oil pastel, but it doesn’t get your fingers all messy (at least, not unless you hold them long enough to get them all melty). It blends really well with a finger, and even better if you dip the tip of said finger in some warm water first. It is a *little* water soluble, for blending purposes. It also blends well with a blending stump, and alcohol blender pen, and, of course, odorless mineral spirits. I honestly like the warm finger blend the best, but your finger will be sore by the end of an artwork, so I settle for a blending stump. I haven’t tried a heat gun yet but I bet that will grease the wheels pretty well, too.
These are VERY chubby little pastels, will definitely not fit into any sharpener I’ve ever seen. If you want a sharp point I’m sure you can use a craft knife or honestly just get a dollar store cutting board with a textured surface and whittle it down on that (bonus being you could *maybe* make a paint with the thick buildup if you get enough of it on there? Idk). You definitely wouldn’t be able to make fine lines with these as is, and maybe even not if they are sharpened, because they are so soft and waxy. Where I wanted hard edges I used a barrier or a blending stump. Still not perfect, but I can use colored pencils to define edges if I need to.
Anyway, all in all, I was very pleased. I’m sure none of what I said is of any use to parents buying these for their kids, but for your inner child, they are a surprisingly good little find. Just, not watercolor. Although in fairness, they did easily wash off of my ruler when I scribbled them on when I misplaced my palette. So that part is true.
EDIT: I took pictures of the text on the box and translated it (thanks, Apple, that has been my favorite feature added to my phone in years). Nowhere on the box do these claim to be watercolors. They repeatedly state that they are water soluble in the sense that they can be cleaned up with water, and that may be true depending on the surface, but they are most definitely not watercolor, so it’s good to know the manufacturer is not claiming that. It’s clearly a mistranslation in the item description on Amazon. If I didn’t love them I’d return them based on that inaccurate description. As it is I think they ought to fix that.
There also seemed to be a suggestion that you can replace individual colors open stock. I don’t know if that’s true in the US or only in Japan, but that would be cool. I already know I’m going to run out of some of these, cute and chunky though they are. I can see myself wearing the reds and purple and blues down to little nubs before too long.
