I've been an Amanda Shires fan for a long time. Live, or on IsoLounging, she was a brilliant storyteller with a gorgeous voice and a fierce fiddle. But in her recent releases, she's been buried in over production or distorted vocals. I knew that someday she'd break through the noise and deliver something groundbreaking. And this is it. Lawrence Rothman is a flipping genius! They let her voice take center stage. Notes are crisp and clear, the production is lush when needed and sparse when it should be.

The lyrics are heart wrenching. Amanda lays bare her life and relationship for us. And in these songs, she's created quiet masterpieces and soaring vocals. She can scorch with a line "Don't threaten me with an open door" and then turn out a quiet plea to stop "little wars". We get her distinctive violin, Jason's ringing guitar, Peter's crystal clear keys, and it's alchemy. And the horns! And background vocals. I could rave about this forever. I'll close with this - I've got the red lp (gorgeous), and am ordering CDs to hand out to friends. Listen to this. It's perfection.

If the worst thing Amanda Shires has experienced is that her husband of 10 years doesn't look at her the way he used to, she is one lucky woman. That's what the lyrics of most of these songs are all about. I knew by the crotch shot inside the CD folder that this record was much ado about nothing. Even the band can't save the songs on this record.

The music is something beetween americana and country and her voice is very fragile. All in all I am satisfied with a purchase. But as I said tatoos look very seductive and inner cover is even more provoking. There is also a very beautiful photo of her below a huge cross. Visually and auraly a fine product.
