Product Description
Sponge Filter
How Does It Work?
Sponge filter uses bubbles of air from an external air pump, or an integral water pump to draw water through the sponge.
What Maintenance Does It Require?
The sponge need to be rinsed about every 2 to 4 weeks. It’s helpful to wash the sponge gently with water from the fish tank instead of tap water.
It is good to replace the sponge after 3 to 6 months’ usage as the holes of sponge is gradually clogged by the tiny debris.

I have had them a while now and feel confident in these sponge filters.
I always end up with a guppy over population and use these to supplement the HOB filter.
Sponge filters are great all-round filters, and work well for fish that don't like movement (like Bettas). You need an air pump and airline tubing to use them, though. They won't flood the ground around the tank like other types of filters, and they don't really break (air pumps do, though). They are a little unsightly and harder to hide than some hang-on-back filters, but not impossible.
This particular sponge filter is about as good as any other, with some caveats. Some aquarium experts recommend larger, open-cell sponges for their filters, which will clog up less than the fine closed-cell sponge on this filter. Because of this design, you will need to clean this filter more often than you otherwise might need to. It does work, though.
Also, this filter is not quite weighted as much as it should be. Even when fully soaked, it's a little too buoyant. A good sponge filter should sit comfortably on the bottom of the tank.
Do not ever replace the sponge, by the way. To clean it, you pull it out of the tank and squeeze it out gently in the old tank water during a water change. The sponge may last years, and will harbor beneficial bacteria for your tank. If you replace it, you will mess your tank up. To replace a filter with another, you want to run the old one alongside the new one for a least a few weeks to help the bacteria colonize the new one.
Product feels good to hold, it has some weight, feels of the same quality as an expensive sponge filter, EASY TO INSTALL. Does not have to be disassembled to be put in tank. Connects to top hole of filter, slap it in the tank and begins working immediately. I am satisfied.

Ive ordered 9 of these sponge filters "20gal" and 2 out of those never made it 3 months.
I noticed the bubbles start to kinda weaken so I figured i was due for a cleaning "but even with super low stocked tanks?"
took it apart and did usual sponge filter cleaning. After cleaning nothing.. maybe a few small bubbles every few seconds. Tried connecting them to tubes that had functional sponges on them.. nothing.. got really into it being i cant sacrifice being down a filter amd camt just go buy one without driving hours.. I think it has something to do with the quality of air stone in the internals and how the connecting tube is "glued" to said stone. I havent been able to find the right size stones to just replace them. worked fine up until that 45ish day mark. Not running them in crazy dirty tanks by any means just frustrating 20-30% of the filters ive purchaced ended up useless in a very short period of time.
