Keller DoveTail Jig for boxes, drawers and furniture.
5 Stars
Keller DoveTail Jig for boxes, drawers and furniture.
Took a DoveTail making class at SF's TechShop and wanted an easier method for making them at home. Looked at PeachTree's similar DoveTail jig system before going with the original Keller.I like the ball bearing based 1/4" router bits for the tail and pin. This means I can use any router: hand, plunge, table and not worry about adapter plates like other DoveTail systems use.I wrongly assumed the comb was metal. It is some kind of laminate. Probably better if you are and idiot and forget to power off your router before pulling the router away from the comb (the only time the bit could tear into the comb). I put labels indicating pin (v shaped) vs dove (u shaped) on the jig so I don't screw it up since they use the same 5/8" guide bearing (I would have designed straight but with a bigger bearing that would not fit the dice side to prevent mistakes). You need to make your own 2.25" x 3.5" x 18" wood block. For the price this should have been included! I guess I'll buy a 4x4 post and cut it down on the table saw. Be sure to use a quality squared off block for best results. The jig is screwed into the block. Be sure to line up the scribed line on the jig with the squared edge of the block. The block is for holding the jig and you actually run your bits into the block to prevent tear outs of your original material.Tip: put two 1/4" bit holding holes on the backside of the block to keep the router bits with the flipped jig when not in use. Otherwise they'll get separated when you need it.The guide says to leave 1/8" extra overhang that you can sand down later (I guess better to be over than under). The jig is 1/2" thick and you need to overshoot your board by 1/16" so the 3/4" bit clears. The book says you can DoveTail boards 1/8" to 3/4" thick. You have to clamp the board in a vise and then clamp the comb to the board and then the hand router on top. For table top routers the board goes straight up in the air (hope you have short boards). Keller and Peachtree both sell clamping systems for this comb that I may need to check out.You cut the dovetails first making sure to center the cuts as you can't have them too close to the edge. After cutting the dovetails lay the board on the board you are going to cut matching pins into and knife mark the lines of where the DoveTail goes. You'll be cutting out the material between so the pins are the only things left to fit into the dovetails.Go too fast and you'll chip. Go too slow and you'll burn the wood. It took me a few practices but it was easy enough. Use a mallet to check for a good fit and if you are too lazy to pry the board open again to put wood glue and redo the mallet step you can simply put chair glue on the exposed joint to let the glue wick into place. This was way more expensive than a typical box finger joint setup but I'm proud that it has excellent documentation, made in America (both the comb and the bits) and is supported by a company that seems to care!

Hands down the easiest and most accurate and productive dovetail jig. If you take time to make the supporting board accurately...(I laminated two pieces of 6/4 Poplar, glued and planed perfectly flat to 2.25" thickness) and subsequently align the support board to the etched line Keller provides on the jig, you can easily make perfect dovetails, uniformly spaced or random spaced or of random width with zero trial and error or additional set ups. Easily accommodates innovative spacing. My first prototype joint after assembling the support board and affixing it to the jig came out perfect. I was pleasantly surprised and now I feel totally confident dovetailing dimensioned cabinetry components of expensive walnut, mahogany, cherry and curly maple. Every joint is effortless to make and beautiful. Using the required bearing guided bits (versus a brass guide bushing in the router baseplate) provides very tight tolerances and beautifully fitted dovetails. I find that using this jig on the router table is a dream...no worry about keeping the router sufficiently balanced and perfectly vertical as cuts are made. Additionally, if you have any questions, the owner, David Keller, is happy to promptly answer emails. Outstanding fine woodworking product at a great price.
One final note: the jig is also available as a two piece set (tails on one, pins on the other). For shops with two people, this would significantly speed up production. I happen to have two router tables; I fit one with the tail cutter and one with the pin cutter, so I can cut tails, then move immediately to the second table to cut pins without changing bits on one table. You can make cabinets and drawers very quickly this way...e.g., I cut drawers with 5 evenly spaced dovetails/pins and completed each corner of the drawer in approximately 90 seconds each, using both router tables. How do you beat that?!

I was looking for a dovetail jig that I knew would work for a 1/4 inch shaft router. I received this as promised and went straight to work. After reading the instructions I made the backing and attached the jig. I made my adjustment cuts and noted that the dovetails were a bit shallow after I got my pins where I wanted them. I was making a replacement drawer for my work bench. I was using plywood to match the original drawers. The jig worked great and was very easy to use. The dovetails were still too shallow and I had to take off just a touch with a razor knife. The router bit wasn't going through the wood fully. I didn't understand why but the joints were very nice and being made from plywood (blow out is a problem) I was extremely happy.
My next project will be finger joints on small boxes. I called the number on the router bit package to make sure I was going to order the correct bit. I got the information I needed and mentioned the small problem I had with the jig. The next thing I know I am going over the jig and the backing, measuring points from all ends. The person that answered the phone was the owner David Keller. He went and got the jig they have attached to a backing and compared measurements until we found the problem. My backing was made from plywood that was not true 3/4 inch and was 1/8 inch too thin. I added a shim and the problem is fixed.
This is a great product and I got even better support. I am very glad I made this purchase.

I've been wanting to do dovetail joinery in my woodworking. I watched a number you online 'how to' videos. I liked the simplicity and ease of use of the Keller jig. Acquired mine from Amazon. For the 1500, you have to create and attach the fence board to the jig. Once I did that, I started making test cuts on pine board scraps. My first joints were successful. I made a minor adjustment to loosen the joints as they are cut. I haven't looked back since. I'm cutting mine on top of a router table, and everything always fits together well. I've been using the various video demonstrations as my guide. I haven't read the instructions that came with the jig yet. I'm really happy with this set, and am confident I'll be cutting relatively easy dovetails for years to come!

Bought this after reading stellar reviews on it, and most claims were right on. The biggest complaint I have is the tear out I experienced, especially in 9 ply Baltic birch, which I commonly use for drawers. I tried various remedies, masking tape on the areas I was routing, adding a piece of 1/4" plywood before clamping it together, etc. Best results seem to come from slowing my feed rate a bit, and going left to right as I routed the pins.

Overall, a great product, well thought out, and well worth the money. I attached mine to a piece of 4X4 I cut down, and it is solid as well as being cheap.

One other complaint- SUPER SAVER SHIPPING from Amazon. It appears they pay for it by delaying shipping your items, (???) it took 6 days to package and ship my item? I received it in 9 days..

I do recommend this item, will work well for most applications.
