Amazon replaced the Charge 5. 10/26/2021.
I am hoping all is well now. I still love the features and product. However, Fitbit Customer support is atrocious unlike the amazing customer service from Amazon. .
11/01/2021 Update.
The new tracker still can't track distance accurately. I am not sure if it is due to the forested mountain trail or my jacket & gloves covering the tracker or a combination. The distance is off by 2 miles reporting 6+ to 7+ miles on a four mile trail. Otherwise it seems to be fine. I might as well just accept things as they are. But if you are a hiker and want to get accurate information about your hike, better hike in open dessert in the summer. Disappointed!
*********
I am very; active hiking and resistance training. (Weights). The old trackers did fairly well counting my steps during my hikes. But were close to worthless when it came to my weight training or even doing abdominal's. The charge 5 tracks everything.
The screen is so easy to read. Very simple to navigate through all the modes.
I am very pleased with it.
But only had it a few days, so time will tell.
2 weeks later....
I still love the features but the device is full of glitches. I assume software glitches.
I hike the exact same trail up the mountain and back three times a week. Each hike the Charge 5 is reporting different mileage. The difference is significant over 0ne mile and sometimes two miles off.
It has gone dead apparently or else I died for one hour twice at the time I went to sleep, one hour later it starts to register a heartbeat and record my sleep.
I have called Fitbit twice, got the old we will get back with you via email with instructions. No email.
I would recommend waiting till they get the bugs out of the software before buying a Charge 5.
No I am not going to send mine back, my old Charge 3 died a few days before I bought the Charge 5. So I will bite the bullet and hope they remedy the issues soon.
October 24th .....
It died or I did again for 35 minutes last night when I went to sleep. Called Fitbit was given the run around. Finally I was told again that they would contact me via email with instructions.
I am sure that they know they have a problem but don't want to admit it. Probably working on a fix. So stalling for time. It is also tracking my hikes inconsistently reporting varying distances even though I am always hiking the exact same mountain trail and have been doing it now for 14 years consistently.
It does have some mild flaws: The GPS will stop working on your walk, even though it is connected via Bluetooth to your phone, and the phone's GPS is available and correct. It also tends to be overly optimistic about how far you have walked, by about 10% or so.
There is one additional feature that they could add which would be very beneficial to many people, myself included: They could track the O2 levels while you sleep, and detect sleep apnea. This is a serious problem which requires medical treatment, and is difficult to detect without something like this.
All the cool new things it can do seem to be part of the premium package that you have to pay for via subscription. I say "seem" because I refuse to give them my credit card for the 6-month "free trial" so I don't get to use the 6-month free trial. The user community is full of people who signed up for the free trial, were charged immediately and now can't cancel. I opted to not go down that path so I didn't sign up and now I feel as though half of what the Charge 5 can do is simply wasted.
Telling Time: this thing isn't a watch because all the "clock faces" were designed by children so they are unreadable. Stylistically, they're cool but you can't actually read them. Not being able to at least use the Charge 5 to get the time is ridiculous.
Alarms: these are tricky to set because you can only do so on the Charge 5 and not via the app. You also have to wait several minutes between setting different alarms because otherwise, it thinks you're attempting to modify the ones you already have. Also, they don't always go off when they should.
Stairs: the Charge 5 no longer counts stairs (altimeter?) so that's a bummer.
Sensitivity: tapping on the pebble face should "wake up" the Charge 5. Be patient because it takes quite awhile and a lot of tapping. And sometimes your definition of "light" isn't the same as Fitbit's.
Some features require the app: ECG and other features require that you use the app but it is NOT clear who owns your data. There is a statement (at one point) that states that whatever data is collected cannot be deleted. This seems fishy but I was unable to find out more online.
There's a manual: but good luck finding it on their website. I had to look through the user community because I couldn't find a simple answer and was directed to page 50 of the "Manual" that I had not found in all my searching. Then I got attitude because I questioned why the manual was so hard to find. It should have come up in my search for "how to use the charge 5" yet didn't. This is a disgrace if you ask me.
Firmware updates: Ok, this is important.... I got my brand-new, out of the box, Charge 5 yesterday and it wasn't too hard to set up although I had several questions. It seemed just fine. Then, last night, it got a firmware update and.... lights out! It shut itself off and that was it! I went back to the online community and searched and searched and this is apparently normal!? I tried many of the suggestions (mostly, putting it on the charger and resetting it) but it just didn't want to work at all. I left it on the charger (where I couldn't tell if it was doing anything or not) and called it a day. I happened to check on it a few hours later and it was on and ready to go. Weird. Does it do this every time there's an update? Does Fitbit test anything they push out? Will this happened every time there's an update? Where is the support?
And while it appeared to work just fine late last night, the alarm I set for this morning did NOT go off. I can see that the alarm is set but I know it didn't go off because I also set my old-fashioned bedside alarm and was awake before the Charge alarm was supposed to go off yet didn't Now I don't trust this device at all and it makes me wonder what else on this thing is inaccurate or not to be trusted. If I set up premium which is supposed to monitor your heart rate, will paramedics suddenly show up at my door if this thing decides that I'm in A-fib? Or my heart rate is through the roof and it thinks I'm having a heart attack?
Overall, it's a nice idea with a LOT of glitches. Buy something else that can be more functional and easier to use. Once this thing dies once and for all, I'm getting a Garmin. No one has these issues with a Garmin.
------------------
Update: I've had this for just over a week and it has "sort of" worked. When it works, it's great. When it doesn't... it's just a waste. Here's the latest example: as the battery wound down to 11%, I put it on its charger and when it was fully charged, I put it back on. Eight hours later, it was deader than a doornail and because of this, failed to wake me up (don't worry, I set my regular alarm). This wasn't the first time it bricked and it will probably do it again in a few days. I stand by my earlier review - get something else.
