Since the death of his twin brother, Oliver’s caught between pleasing his fans and finding himself. Emery finds him first.

Emery has never felt more alone. Raising her daughter is both her pleasure and her pain as she struggles to hold on to her job as a bartender and keep a roof over their heads. With no one to help them—no support system—any unexpected expense or late bill could turn their whole world upside down.

Reeling from the death of his twin brother and bandmate, rock star Oliver Smith is trying to drink his problems away. Apparently he isn’t very good at it; they follow him wherever he goes. Also in hot pursuit are the paparazzi, who catch Oliver at his lowest low.

He could have walked into any bar in California, but he walked into hers. Emery helps Oliver lose the crowd, and they find themselves alone: two people whose paths are marked with loss and pain. However, they hold an unshakable hope for healing. They find solace together, but can their love withstand the world?

An Amazon Best Book of the Month: Romance

“Cherry dazzles with this deeply felt friends-to-lovers contemporary…with its uncommon depth, Cherry’s story will elicit tears in some places, laughter in others. A stellar cast…Readers will be hooked.” Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Romance readers who crave drama, trauma, and tears on the road to a happily-ever-after will devour this book.” Library Journal

“Brittainy Cherry’s The Mixtape is a rockstar romance with a whole lot of heart.” POPSUGAR

“I loved every single thing about this book. It is beautiful, heartbreaking, full of heart, and hopeful. Expect to laugh, cry, and want to create your own mixtape.” Living My Best Book Life

From the Publisher

Friendly warning from an enthusiastic editor: Do you have tissues handy? I strongly recommend you grab some before proceeding. Bestselling author Brittainy Cherry is the queen of ugly-cry romances, the master of weaving stories of perfect, tender love and soul-searing angst.

On the surface, this is a rock star romance. Oliver Smith is world-famous, with legions of devoted fans. His art—the music he writes—touches countless lives, and he has the power to inspire, to soothe heartbreak, to help someone forget their pain, even if just for one song at a time. In fact, he did that for Emery, the heroine of the book. Before ever meeting her, he helped her through some unimaginable hurt, and his music is still the soundtrack for her life.

But Oliver has recently experienced devastating loss, and he can’t find a way to heal himself. Without his twin brother and bandmate, Oliver is adrift and broken. Oof. Remember those tissues I recommended?

This book gave me all the feels, reminding me what it was like to be young and so in love that your heart seems to exist outside of you, a delicate muscle that somehow belongs to someone else. To sometimes struggle in life, yes, but to always trust in a fierce, consuming love and never let go of hope. And this
is a romance, after all. Emery and Oliver may go through it, but rest assured they get a Happily Ever After for the ages.

This hit harder then I was expecting.
Between the way the characters let music be their voice and the feelings of wanting to be loved by family, this made me feel like someone gets me. Such a strong story and a great way to tackle feelings and social media trolls. Everyone needs an Abigail in their lives. Some of her quotes have been saved to read when my feelings are too much. How Oliver and Emery were able to rise out of their darkest times is beautiful. Just being in your feelings can be rough. You are your own worst enemy, and that sucks when you have no one to snap you out of it. No one to remind you of how wonderful and important you are. Then we have social media. Keyboard warriors can make you hide under a rock because you let them make your already defeated feelings seem real. If others say out loud what you are feeling, it must be true. Right? Finding the right people who will lift you up, stand with you on good days and bad, those are your family. Those are the ones that you take advise from and listen to. Not the ones that only judge you on your post or what others have said about you.How these two bonded over music is wonderful. Music is so strong. It can pump you up, calm you down, let you get lost in emotion, or just put a smile on your face. Being able to express their thoughts and feelings with songs because they didn’t have the courage to find words on their own was touching and beautiful. This was something I felt in my soul.

This is such a sweet, inspiring, and thoughtful story told in such articulate, imaginative, and engaging way. Brittainy Cherry is a wonderful storyteller, her story kept me entertained, it avoids the predictable pitfalls of most romance novels, there are zero plot holes or inconsistencies, and it was impossible to not fall in love with these characters and root for Emery and Oliver’s love story. I can’t wait to read something else from Ms. Cherry, and urge you all to do the same, you will not be disappointed.

I want to say something first. I read a couple of the reviews and people talked about how graphic and over the top the sexy scenes were. I did not see any of that. There were two scenes very late in the book. They were not graphic…at all. Trust me, I love my books with smut. This wasn’t it. I love an amazing story, but I also like a really good sexy scene. I was actually disappointed because the sex was pretty basic. I mean really, really basic. Like “They made love all night” basic. So people don’t believe the reviews saying it’s full of smut. It was not. Trust me. I was very disappointed. Also, these are romance (sometimes erotica) books. I need y’all to chill out. You’re going to find a sexy scene. Deal with it.

Having said all of that, this book brought me to tears several times. It is very rare that a book does that to me. This is my second book by this author. I am completely impressed with her work. She knows how to weave an amazing story. I need to be hooked in a book pretty early in, if I’m not I will stop reading it and return it to the kindle library or curse Amazon for paying full price (I will never return them just because I don’t like them…I’m not an uncivilized monster). These two books I just read from her (because once I find an author I like I just binge read all their stuff) had it all….amazing story, heart and main characters (sexy scenes were too basic for me, alas I digress). You could not help but to root for the main characters….especially Oliver. Just wanted to hug him through kindle. I loved their HEA. Stay with me folks, I’m almost done.

For this story, I had two main complaints. I really wanted to see Cam have more of a comeuppance. I was so mad when I realized that Oliver did not record their conversation, but then to know the paparazzi did and then to never hear anything else from it…it was kind of anticlimactic. I’m sure the author left it out as a way to not give that demon anymore time, but I really wanted to see it. The other complaint was of her mom and dad. As I was reading I started realizing that the father was the problem. Her mother experienced severe trauma at a very young age just like her sister, and was told that it was her fault. He actually said that he forgave her for her transgressions. I can’t say what happened without leaving a big spoiler so I won’t. I’ll just say the mom was traumatized and stayed with someone who was horrible to her for years. Of course she treated her children like crap. Not excusing her at all. I just wish that she would’ve had a come to Jesus moment where she finally realized what he had done to her and how he caused her to lose her two children due to his poison.

So anyway buy the book. Read the book; it’s amazing it’s amazing it’s amazing. Also there was no smut. It was vanilla. It was so beyond vanilla, it was dehydrated vanilla.
Ok, there was no smut. I am still very disappointed about that. Get the book it’s amazing…see y’all next time.

Wow. Oliver + Emery = 😍. There are so many levels of emotion in this fantastic story of family curses and love, I don't even know where to begin!
Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2022
I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Then I listened to the audio book, too. It was so good. So real. It deals with some tough stuff but it reflects real life traumas and struggles. Brittainy Cherry did a wonderful job in the telling of this story. This is the first book I read by her, it won't be my last. The story is about two people trying to deal with what life as handed them. Emery is a single mom raising her daughter Reese but bearly getting by. But still she makes it work. Oliver is a famous musician part of the duo Alex and Oliver with his twin brother Alex. He's more withdrawn than Alex who is the people person. The book opens six months before as the duo is at the release party for their newest album. Alex works the room as Oliver stands by the sidelines getting ready to leave this isn't what he's comfortable with doing. He wants to leave early but " his girlfriend " Cam doesn't want too. She networking the room. Trust me as you read you'll find out she is a horrible person!!! Oliver goes to leave but stops to talk with fans and take pictures. Alex shows up outside too. He's ready to leave he wants to check on Kelly, Oliver's assistant who wasn't feeling well. Yup, he's gotta a thing for Kelly. They get in the car . Alex sends a song to Oliver. Its their thing to do, share songs to share feelings. A car accident happens, Alex doesn't make it and Oliver blames himself for his twins death because he left the party early with him instead of staying like Alex normal would. The media isn't too nice on the death of Alex, the social media is worse. They all blame Oliver wish he was dead to instead of Alex. So Oliver's mental health isn't really good when the book picks up six months after the death of his twin. He's drinking to self medicate and staying in a toxic relationship with Cam because he can't be alone. He's in bad shape. But he still has his manager Tyler and Kelly his assistant who's also trying to deal with Alex's death. Nobody likes Cam! Hell I didn't like her! She's too fake and spotlight hungry. Oliver is supposed to do a show that night as a solo artist but he doesn't know how to do it without Alex. Emery is working as a bartender at a bar near the arena. She comes to work on a quite night only a hand full of customers. But her boss Joey does tell her about the arena concert. She's a fan of Alex and Oliver their earlier stuff. It got her through her upbringing and tough times. Oliver couldn't do the show he wandered into her bar in disguise and has been drinking whiskey in the dark back corner. They meet when she goes to find out what he's drinking. Things go bad when the concert lets out and people fill the bar. People talk shit about Oliver not knowing he's in the bar drunk trying to deal with everything. Things go bad. Oliver confronts a guy talking shit about him. Things escalate quickly. Emery protects Oliver by throwing everyone out of the bar to take care of Oliver. The paparazzi show up. She closes the bar and takes Oliver out the back way to her car. Needless to say she takes him home to her place. Things are a bit funny when Oliver wakes up on a Disney princess bed sheets and meets Reese. Emery takes Oliver home. Afterwards she lose her job at the bar because of what happened and loses her paycheck which she needs to pay her rent. Oliver finds out and wants to make it right so he hires her to be his chef. She ends up being what he needs to heal. They help each other mend their hearts. Abigail helps she's Emery's neighbor and a therapist ( retired ) who has help Emery through some tough stuff. Emery suggests that Oliver talk with Abigail which he does. Emery has family stuff to deal with that gets thrown into the story. Hold on to your seat when the truth finally comes out on the Taylor family. Wow! The book is that one word in a nutshell. It deals with tough issues depression, anxiety, bullying, rape, etc. But it tells how those issues affect a person in real life. I loved how the author weave music throughout the book with real songs to tell the story too. Some of my favorite songs were mentioned throughout the book. Songs can help us describe how we feel on the daily. I have playlists full of my favorites. So do Oliver and Emery. I won't spoil how it ends. Read it! Its worth it! But I will say one thing the author got right our lives are a series of mixtapes telling our own individual stories.. Just like Oliver and Emery. Go grab this book right now. Read it. You'll love it. I know I did 😍!!

Storyline was somewhat interesting, but writing was poor. The intimacy passages read like pornography. Author repeated certain phrases over and over.

This was a really good read. It brought me back to my teenage years reading something romantic. It was very well written and the storyline was easy to follow and heartbreakingly good. Now being a mother, the ending got me emotional. Definitely enjoyed this book, it was going to be my book to help me fall asleep but I found myself reading it through the day.

The story had me in tears and laughing out loud.
My first time I’ve read anything by this author but definitely won’t be the last if the rest of her stories are like this one.
Can’t recommend enough but don’t bother if all your interested in is spice cause it doesn’t have it but it makes the story even more amazing.
Awesome job author.

What a beautiful story of loss, pain, trauma, depression and the healing power of love.
I loved every minute of this book. The characters are well fleshed out, the story flows well, the topics are raw and emotional and so actual for the world we live in: rape, victim shaming, depression, post-partum, trauma.
The BIPOC characters are amazing. The dialogue is so good. There is a little girl in this book that literaly stole my heart.
I had a great time reading Oliver and Emery's story and I highly recommend it!
