Editorial Reviews
Song, the new album from cellist Sheku-Kanneh Mason, features music from across the entire spectrum of classical, folk, jazz and pop - all personally curated by Sheku. The eclectic mix of styles are tied together by one thing - the unique singing voice of Sheku's cello. On Song, Sheku collaborates with friends and family, including jazz pianist Harry Baker, singer-songwriter Zak Abel, and soprano Pumeza Matshikiza.

J’en suis resté ébahi et très admiratif...comme quoi le talent n'attend pas le nombre des années!
With this disc, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason sets standards of excellence against which other cello music and cellists should be judged.
I wish to add, however, that though Sheku is the dominant artist still invariably the performance of all artists who collaborated with him in this rendition was superb. And there are pieces with two cellos , four cellos and five cellos; there are pieces with piano accompaniment; and pieces with the accompaniment of a soprano or a male voice. One might say that there was a benign conspiracy. But there is a simpler explanation namely that the charismatic cellist was exceptionally demanding in his choice of partners.
The disc is ambitiously varied yet amazingly cohesive. The compilation pairs the cellist world-class technical skill and classical repertoire with his own arrangement and improvisations comprising a seamless crossing from classical repertoire to folk, jazz, and pop.
The distinguished music critic for 'The New Yorker' and eminent author, Alex Ross once remarked that there is no classical and popular music only good and bad music. The disc clarifies that 'good' classical and pop music can beautifully and harmoniously coexist in the same compilation.
As to which piece moved me more, I would unhesitatingly say the poignant movement from Messiaen's 'Quartet for the End of Time; a piece of music with one of the most harrowing origins in the classical music canon. Composed while Messiaen was in a prisoner-of-war camp in Nazi-controlled Silesia, the Quartet's premiere was given in 1941 by musicians playing on broken instruments with an audience of prisoners.
Concluding, I can only reiterate that the compilation is a very rare gem, a veritable masterpiece.
