Hallelujah is a wonderful addition to any home library! If you are looking to celebrate advent leading up to Christmas but do not know where to start, this is a perfect option. It combines Scripture with Classical music, so as a homeschool mom, this was right up my alley. It breaks down Handel's Messiah so that you know exactly what you're doing each day. My children and I now know and love The Messiah thanks to this book!

My eldest son introduced this book to me during the advent season when we went to visit him in December 2022. He went through this book with his wife and kids (ages 15, 14, and 11) every night leading up to Christmas Day.

The book is set up so each night you listen to a portion of the Messiah. I have never understood or liked operatic music, but with this book the author writes out the words they’re singing so you can read along and actually understand the words being sung -which is all portions of scripture. It gave a whole new deep and rich meaning to it all. Plus it caused us to actually pause and reflect on the meaning of the season.

The author has lots of detailed explanations and activities, and even recipes you can do and follow if you want. Or you can just keep it simple and only follow the readings for the scripture and song each night. I will be using this each December from now on. It deeply touched me.

The heart of this book is simple - a short Scripture reading followed by a brief selection from the Messiah. Even a family with no musical background can appreciate the beauty of Handel’s masterpiece. Those already familiar with Handel will love the opportunity to meditate on Christ’s coming through listening to the Messiah bit by bit.

The additional resources truly round out the book. I gleaned fantastic ideas for making advent and Christmas meaningful for my family, and I enjoyed the hymn of the week, poems, essays, and Scripture memory suggestions.

It’s definitely worth the purchase! I’m looking forward to using it with my children for many years. We love it so much we are going to gift a copy to my husband’s parents for Christmas.

This is a beautiful and comprehensive guide through advent with great depth. Each week includes a poem, a hymn or carol (some also given in Latin as well) an introduction to the focus of the week, scripture memory and daily portions from Handel's Messiah with the relevant verses from the Bible. There are also recipes, explanations of St Lucia's Day traditions and St Nicholas. There are also tips on listening to music, recipes and personal anecdotes.

There is enough content in this book to revisit at least several times to develop a deeper understanding of the music and poems offered here, if not every Advent. For deeper study, you could revisit the Latin hymns for language learning in later years, you could focus on one recipe a year to supplement your traditional family recipes, you could try picking out phrases from the Messiah on an instrument. Or you could simply adopt the schedule into your days of advent without fanfare and let them become part of your family traditions.

I’m so thankful for this book. We have three kids 7, 4 and 2. It’s the first year an advent resource has really worked for us. We played the section of Messiah over dinner, I read the scripture portion / poems after I finished eating while kids were still eating. And then played the suggested Advent hymns / carols after that. The kids often got up and danced along after finishing eating. We did an advent wreath with LED candles. We were away on holiday for 10 days during advent and it was easy to bring this book, LED candles and Bluetooth speaker to be able to do the devotions while we were away. Most days it took no longer than 10 minutes but over the season added up to be a very rich and wonderful experience.
