Charge into Reading Decodable Books (Stage 1): 5 Short Vowel Decodable Readers to Help Kindergarten and First Grade Beginning Readers Learn to Read (One Short Vowel Sound Per Book) Paperback – September 4, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
Grounded in the Science of Reading and designed in consultation with Orton-Gillingham trained literacy specialist Marisa Ware, the Charge into Reading Decodable Readers take the guesswork out of learning to read!
Now UFLI Aligned and Listed on the UFLI Decodable Text Guide
The Short Vowel Beginning Reader Set is perfect for children who know their letter sounds and are ready to begin decoding or "sounding out" words. Each book in the set focuses on a single short vowel sound, building reading confidence one sound at a time. Compelling storylines paired with a strict Scope and Sequence make for a series that children won't just be ABLE to read, but that they will actually WANT to read.
- Five short-vowel-specific decodable books with a true beginning, middle, and end that a beginning reader can ACTUALLY read
- Pat Had a Hat: Short A
- Ten Hens: Short E
- Swim, Tim: Short I
- Hop, Frog: Short O
- Run, Pug: Short U
- Simple sentences: The bugs run in the sun. Jen fell in the pen. Sid flips his fins.
- Only 5 sight (high-frequency) words: a, oh, the, to, was
- 73 unique short vowel words
- 8 pages of short-vowel-specific literacy activities per book enable parents or small groups to transition seamlessly from reading to practicing literacy skills.
Please note: CVC words that focus on a single vowel sound alone cannot create a quality story. For this reason, our short vowel decodable readers contain a select few consonant blends and digraphs that adhere to the select vowel sound. This is the only set where such an exception is made to future spelling patterns.
Written by best-selling children’s book author Brooke Vitale, every book in the Charge into Reading series is fully vetted by LETRS, Top Ten Tools, and Orton-Gillingham-trained reading specialist and executive function coach Marisa Ware, MSEd. Charge into Reading Decodable Books support any reading program, growing WITH your child to keep them entertained, engaged, and eager to keep reading!
We believe in complete transparency. That’s why our Scope and Sequence lists every word in every book. Download it today! Not sure what your child’s reading level is? Download our Reading Assessment to find out what books are right for your child.

Perfect for beginning readersNew readers often lack stamina, and trying to read a long book can be exhausting. Each Short Vowel Decodable Reader story is the perfect length to hold a new reader’s attention without causing fatigue or frustration. Eight pages of reading activities following the story enhance the specific skills children are working on while adding an extra level of fun not found in other beginning readers. |
Using humor to engage new readersThe best way to engage children in reading is with humor. That’s why the Charge into Reading line follows one simple rule: if a story doesn't make my kids laugh, I scrap it and start again. Every book we publish features a clear beginning, middle, and end, adhering to the goals of that stage of books without sacrificing plot, grammar, or early sentence structure. |
Unique focus on one sound at a timeThe Charge into Reading Short Vowel Set contains five books, each focused on a different short vowel sound. Repetition of the same sound throughout the book helps new readers master one short vowel sound at a time, giving them the confidence to move on to stories featuring mixed short vowel sounds. |
Editorial Reviews
Review
These newly published books are the perfect addition to your decodable book collection. They reinforce specific phonics skills using engaging storylines and bright illustrations. Bonus: each book includes multiple pages of sound-specific activities that reinforce phonological awareness and phonics skills. My students love getting to the end of the books just so they can practice these skills in a fun way.—Katelyn Rigg, LiteracyLearn.com
My favorite books on the decodable list, these gems are written with a specific phonetic scope and sequence by expert writer, editor, and literacy advocate, Brooke Vitale. Growing readers will be able to progress as readers because the books are written to build upon each other. Each book teaches and reinforces a phonics rule, such as CVC, blends, or diagraphs. Even better, kids will enjoy the books because the stories are funny and engaging. Plus, you'll love how each decodable book includes eight pages of reinforcing reading activities after the story.—Melissa Taylor, imaginationsoup.net

About the author
Brooke Vitale began her career as a children's book editor twenty years ago with one goal: create books that children would enjoy reading and that would have a lasting impact on their lives. But it wasn't until she started teaching her own son to read that she realized just how important it was to have the right books. And she realized that the right books weren’t available. That realization led Brooke to learn more about how children actually learn to read. She teamed up with Orton-Gillingham trained literacy specialist Marisa Ware to design a line of beginning readers that children could ACTUALLY read. The result was the Charge into Reading Decodable Book series, now being adopted by school districts around the country.
In addition to the Charge into Reading line, Brooke is also the author of more than 100 traditionally published books including The Magic Is in You, The Mandalorian: A Clan of Two, and Goonies: An Illustrated Classic. All told, Brooke’s books have sold over 500,000 copies and climbing.
When Brooke is not writing books for children, she works as a children's book editor. Over the course of her 15+ years at top New York publishers including Disney and Penguin Young Readers, Brooke Vitale edited thousands of books, including best-selling titles Hide-and-Hug Olaf and Olaf’s Night Before Christmas.
Today, Brooke is a freelance children’s book editor and runs brookevitale.com, a website dedicated to helping aspiring authors navigate the publishing and self-publishing industry. Since beginning her freelance career, Brooke has helped more than 1,000 authors achieve their dream of publishing a book.

As a reading intervention teacher, I love the font used in these books - the letters (and words) are nicely spaced which is always helpful for beginning readers. These books are also the perfect size for little hands (15cm x 15cm). Highly recommended!
