    4 Stars
A powerful laptop, lightweight laptop that perfectly encompasses productivity with leisure activity.
We were originally eyeing some pricier laptops but shot for the MSI GS65 after seeing some favorable reviews across the web. We are not disappointed.Pros:- The performance: It's simply a monster laptop. It has no problems running CPU heavy programs like Photoshop and Adobe Premier. It makes productivity apps like Excel and Onenote run without a flicker of disturbance and will run every game I have on high settings -- most on ultra, even. I sometimes have as many as four intensive programs open, and it handles it with pure finesse.- The weight: It's extremely lightweight for how powerful it is. I can easily take this laptop with me wherever I go. Clocking in at 4.14 pounds, it's a simple move for any distance. I don't see this weight being an issue for most people.- The design: Unlike your typical gaming computer, the Gs65 sports a sleek and professional design. The programmable keyboard allows for both a creative design for your home, and a simple business oriented design for work. No matter where you use this laptop, it will be appropriate. Mini-con: The dragon logo may have a less than professional “feel”, but if it’s truly an issue — it’s nothing a sticker can’t solve. It also has a very thin display, without a ton of black space (minus the bottom which has about an inch?), so that makes for quite an appealing look.Cons:- The placement of certain ports: Most ports are in perfectly fine places, but the HDMI and charging port are located towards the center of the right side of the laptop. This may not be a universal issue for some, but for me it causes some disturbance to my setup. If these ports were pushed to the end (near the screen) I'd be able to comfortably fit everything on my desk.- The noise and heat: This is not uncommon for gaming laptops, and I happen to believe this laptop handles this issue decently. The only reason I'm placing this as a con is because I've noticed the MSI GS65 may be more susceptable to noise issues without much intensity. I've run some simpler programs that were met with loud-ish cooling efforts, but overall it's not a big deal for me personally. Heat wise, the laptop is almost always a little warm -- and after a prolonged period it can become scolding. Again, not uncommon.- The speaker quality: This is my biggest con. I listen to music 95% of the time I'm using my laptop, and the speaker quality is pretty abysmal. The laptop does not have a great max voume either, so if you do plan on getting this machine, do not expect great things in that department. I'd invest in some decent speakers or headphones if you are an avid listener.Side notes:- The bloatware: MSI sure does have a lot of programs to accompany your machine. I don't know enough about all of them to put them as a pro or con, but I appreciate the effort to add some helpful features.- The battery life: I think it's pretty good for a gaming laptop, but it's not great.- The OS: Never been a fan of windows 10, but that can change :)Thanks for reading! Hope this helps.

Top reviews from the United States

Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2019
First off- I am in IT, and have very high expectations for laptops. I researched for almost a year before purchasing.

I have been shopping on and off for the last year, and when I buy Motherboards or other major components, MSI is always my first choice when shopping. I obviously found this laptop first when I was looking for something light, small, and can handle anything I throw at it, while looking professional when doing it. I didn't want anything bulky or screaming "Gaming Laptop" as I do other things than just gaming like Video Editing, Photo Editing, web design, Virtualization, etc. as my wife calls it, "Nerd Stuffs". I did however look at the Razor, ROG, and the HP Omen, when making my decision to spend ~1600+ on a laptop. I will list Pros and Cons:

PROS: The style, light, and overall thinness of this laptop. Its very light (4.65ish pounds), looks very sleek and thin, and when you have it sitting on your desk at work it doesn't look obnoxious like you are just sitting there saying "look at my gaming fancy laptop".

The Keyboard is very clicky, and mechanical. It has a great layout and customizing the colors per key is pretty slick. When you hit the "FN" key for hotkeys, the hotkeys light up red and turn off all other key lights making it easy to see where they all are.

The screen quality - 144hz 1080p IPS is very bright, crisp and clear. You would be surprised at how smooth window animations and game video actually are. The frame around is very thin and low profile.

The POWER! - This laptop plays Mass Effect on the highest settings without even kicking the fans up, (i know its an old game) but it definitely kicks my prior GTX660 in the pants with graphics. Rendering videos is quick as well! I got the 1060 with 6gb memory. Computer boots up in about 5 seconds, cold bootup to desktop.

Battery Life - With general working, emails, internet, etc the battery will easily last 5+ hours. I have not tested it gaming, as more than likely I will leave it plugged in when gaming anyways.

USB3.1 is very quick pulling files back and forth - Bluetooth works great with my MX Master 2s Mouse.

Lots of ports for video, USBC, Full Ethernet, etc.

    CONS-
Honestly nothing major yet, but so far-
FINGERPRINT Magnet! It is a nice sleek metal frame, but resting palms on it will definitely leave prints, you can see every place you touched it between wipe-downs. MSI did provide a nice Microfiber Cloth to keep it wiped up.

The Stickers............. Seriously..... there is one large spec sticker that came right off, no big deal, but the PC MAG "brag" Sticker ---WOULD NOT COME OFF--- It took me about 15 minutes of carefully picking it off because it left so much residue that I ended up having to use goo gone to get it off, which I REALLY didn't want to do, but it was my only choice. It was totally crooked and I wasn't about to just leave it on.

Bloatware - It honestly wasn't THAT bad like other reviewers stated, it does come with 60 days of Norton's latest crapware (first thing I removed) but most of the junk is the Windows 10 standard junk - not MSI's fault really.

Laptop Speakers - The speakers are seriously nothing special. They do the job, but lets be real, if you are trying for amazing sound, you're going to be using headphones anyways. The onboard DAC is great with a lot of settings.

Hard Drive partition map- The OS is on about 65% of the drive. Then there are 2 partitions from MSI for recovery and tools. I burned the disks and saved images of them to my External, and on my FileServer and dumped those partitions to give me ~97% of the drive. MSI has a program installed to walk you though the process.

Overall- I really enjoy this laptop a lot. It was hard biting the bullet and buying, but worth every penny. It slips right in my backpack and can carry it around with me anywhere I go. It was perfect for me, and has yet to disappoint me yet performance wise. MSI definitely means it when they call it a "Stealth Thin" laptop.

Some things for people to consider:
When buying, think about how much files/games/etc you want to put on it. I bought the 256gb SSD, and definitely wish I got the bigger drive. Its not really a big deal though because I carry a 2tb Western Digital Passport so if I have a big project, I can store it there when I am not working on it; however games are HUGE. I believe Titanfall clocked in 50+ gb.
If you already have a standard sized laptop backpack, this will fit it. Mine was bought at Wal-Mart for 40 bucks when I really needed one, and this slips right in. No need to buy anything special if you don't want to.

Well, this was long winded, But I really hoped I helped all of you still reading make a great decision to buy this laptop.

Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2018
This is a wonderful laptop that I would recommend to anyone looking for a more portable and powerful gaming machine without the aesthetics that scream "GAMER FUEL". The black brushed aluminum with gold accents are a beautiful combination for this device and the minimalistic approach make it look even more appealing. The attention to detail is even present in the packaging which are also a sight to behold. (The box the laptop came in can even double as a temporary platform if you want to put it on your bed!)

The specs for this machine are pretty high up there for such a sleek form factor. The model I purchased came with the GTX 1060 and can play most games on high but you may have to lower the settings to take advantage of the 144Hz refresh rate. The CPU is nothing to scoff at either as the i7 in it can scream through most tasks. My model came with 16 GB of DDR4 RAM that you can upgrade but I chose not to as 16 GB is more than enough for most games and programs. The 256 GB of M.2 SSD storage was also adequate for a few games and it reduces the load times considerably. Going from an SSD to an non-SATA M.2 is similar to going from an HDD to an SSD. Quite the increase. There is also an additional slot for another M.2 SSD but only one of them supports SATA.

The screen is simply one of the best I've seen on a laptop of comparible specs. A full 144Hz with a display range close to that of IPS levels and a razor thin bezel to boot makes viewing it quite the experience.

The keyboard and track pad are good as well. The keyboard feels responsive and has fully customizable keybinds and LED backlighting that you can control with the SteelSeries software. The trackpad flows and feels nice to the touch but I haven't used it much as I prefer mice but its still perfect for traveling.

It comes with a number of MSI software that is good to use like the Profile controllers that allow you to adjust fan curves and clock settings via hotkeys. However there is a lot of bloatware that this machine comes with as well. I would immediately uninstall the antivirus that it comes with and install the antivirus of you choice or none at all. As with most newly purchased laptops you should uninstall any bloatware or just reinstall the OS to make it run faster.

There are some caveats to this laptop. As beautiful as it is, it smudges quite easily. The font on the keyboard is also not the most aesthetically pleasing thing in the world. The laptop also gets incredibly hot and loud when gaming at high settings, although you can alleviate this with liquid metal or a very high conductivity thermal paste. Speaking of which, getting to any of the internal components is pretty difficult as the motherboard is flipped compared to other laptops. You will have to use a toolkit to remove the motherboard in order to change out the RAM or M.2 SSDs or change the thermal paste. Doing that is a pretty nerve wracking task and is not recommend unless you have experience in installing hardware components. The external video output ports are also in a strange position. They are on the right sight of the laptop and can get in the way if you are using a mouse.

Overall, this is an extremely solid machine and I am very satisfied with my purchase. Parting advice; undervolt the cpu/gpu in order to get maximum performance (lower electricity usage means lower heat output). Each chip is different so safe undervolting settings may vary from person to person. I would have a friend or a professional undervolt the laptop for you if are uncomfortable with doing it yourself.
