This book was one that I literally could not put down. I enjoyed every second of it.
I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the main Character Enrique is incredibly relatable, and so is his journey of self exploration and love.
There were different points in the book where I cried real tears, and points where I laughed my ass off. If you’re considering reading this please do!

Funny, sincere summer read centering a bi Chicano American
Absolutely loved reading every minute of this laugh out loud funny book. It really helped end my summer on a high note. Very relatable and brought me back to being a teenager and having many of these feelings for the first time due to the talents of the author. I love how the main character stuck up for other marginalized characters without it ever feeling preachy and from an honest place of not knowing every thing but knowing that certain things are simply wrong. The bi representation in this book was spot on, juicy, and refreshing. Can't wait to read more from Aceves.

Wow where do I even start! It’s simple this book was beautifully written! I love the complexity and simplicity of Quique who is trying to find his footing in this crazy world. It’s a wonderful coming of age story. This story had me laughing and crying. It also had me gasping out loud! All the characters were written with such color and passion. This is one of my top five books I have read this year!

Main character Enrique has to deal with some turbulent emotions and trying to explain his identity to himself and others. The author does a nice job of reminding us how we have to navigate a lot of first-time experiences as teenagers. On top of that it's also a good story.

Going from being that 17 year old to now 19 about to be 20 I see myself a lot in Enrique. Even if I have never done anything sexually or romantically with someone, I find similarities in the struggling mental health and even though I still am. It is nice to know I can find a book that can do that and have a poc couple who are brown, because we don’t get enough of those, especially ones that are interracial.

I randomly found this author somehow on twitter and having never read a book with a bi character I thought I'd give it a shot. SUCH a good book!! Amazing representation and a wonderful read.

This novel is an excellent, quick read, impossible to put down. The writing is phenomenal and the audiobook narrator brings the main character and the story to life.
Enrique has a crush on his good friend, Saleem, but with their differing religious views, the question of sexuality arises. Not only that, but Quique's love seems to be unrequited. Using his summer to try and get over his feelings for Saleem, Quique tends to experiment with some other guys he knows, not really sure how to move forward. He also somewhat likes his other best friend, who is a girl, though does n't bother persuing when he finds out she has a girlfriend. Being bisexual certainly has its challenges!
Quique soon learns that trying to move his love aside using physical relationships with others might not have ben the best idea. Between thoughts of suicide and navigating senior year, Quique has a lot to learn, but its by making mistakes that learning can happen, and readers should take away that this is okay. Mistakes happen and we as people can really only learn through our own experiences.
This book features LGBTQ representation, cultural diversity (Hispanic and Palestinian), and really delves into self-identity and how complicated it can be when one is gay or bisexual, but their religion, or the religion of someone they like, claims that it is wrong to be so. There are moments of depression and suicidal contemplation in this book that hit hard and can make those parts challenging to read, but it is also a reality that those who are LGBTQ+ have a higher risk of suicide because of their religious pressures or lack of resources and safe people to go to.
A phenomenal novel that really sends an impactful message to the reader. While it has its heavy topics, there are also a number of moments that include light-hearted fun and just the experience of being a teenage boy. An excellent read I highly recommend if you want something that you will devour in a matter of hours.

Could do without the racism

It’s an OK story but the revisionist history and the author’s pseudo-‘progressive’ racism against Jews got in the way. Disappointed to see such an attack.

Ich fand das Buch schrecklich und kann einfach nicht verstehen, wie man so eine sinnlose und unschlüssige Story schreiben kann, die sich ließt wie eine schlechte fanfiction auf wattpad

I love books like THIS IS WHY THEY HATE US.
We get to travel closely to Enrique's head and heart, so everything feels vivid and real. The complicated relationships, the personal hurdles, and the trials and tribulations of growing up queer. Fantastic mental health rep underpins the whole thing, making a layered, fun, touching, and enjoyable read with a huge heart.
I loved the almost dating sim feel of trying to figure out romantic prospects, which made me realise that's EXACTLY what it's like in real life sometimes, though I'd never thought that whilst playing a dating sim before...
The characters are wonderful, and the narrative is smart and self aware, including some of the sweetest coming out moments I've ever read.
The whole thing flows with a voice that's both easy to read and fulfilling, that kind of voice where you just flow through the pages enjoying the ride not hitting a single stumbling block on the way.
This was the first book I read in 2023, and I almost wish I'd had it in my back pocket for when I was in a reading slump because it would definitely have picked me up! Instead it's a great way to start my year, and an introduction to an author than now gets added to my instabuy list!
