It grows on you. These guys sometimes took themselves a bit too seriously & got a bit too cute, plus it was tough to avoid some song-to-song redundancy/sameness with their unique style, but overall pretty good stuff.

PS Too bad the duo's 2nd best cut, All I Want For Christmas, is not on here.

I think most of the Timbuk 3 albums are probably better than this splintered best of with one nothing special original cut. OK to get you started, but Pat Macdonald's songs just got better over the years so check out his solo work too.

This a good compendium of their discography, and proves they were so much more than "The Future's So Bright...".Brother and sister Pat and Barbara McDonald are the creative core, producing catchy, simple alt-rock songs with snarky, sardonic lyrical content, reminiscent to me of Mose Allison or perhaps some late-'60's--early '70's Kinks. A fun listen.

almost everybody misunderstands The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades. the song is an ironic view of how our technological advancements are exceeding america's education systems. our schools are not preparing kids enough for what's out there. maybe the poppy music gets in the way-people take it too seriously. listen to timbuk 3's 6-song album released just before 100 Lovers for the acoustic version. it's much darker and you'll probably understand what it's about better.
timbuk 3 is one of the best groups out there and their music only gets better over time... sinful life is the ultimate wedding song...

やむえずTimbuk3のベスト盤を購入することにしました(ﾌｧｰｽﾄｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ…ロバがテレビを背負ったジャケットのが入手できねぇ～ )。1986年から1991年までにI.R.S.レーベルからリリースされた4枚のアルバムから選ばれた14曲入りCDになります。
♪M-1、”The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shade ”が先日FMでオンエアされているのを聴いて大変気に入りました。
…将来はサングラスをかけなければならないほど眩しい、という意味なんですが、1980年代の”バブル”、”ヤッピー現象”(young urban professionals)といったお金第一主義の雰囲気を皮肉った曲だそうでが…ソングライティングにとてもセンスを感じました。

”TIMBUK3”は、パット＆バーバラのマクドナルドの夫婦が学生時代から始めたグループだそうです。
80年代のMTV全盛のシーンの中、ラジカセやドラムマシーンも駆使したセンスもカッコよいですね(ちっとも安っぽく聴こえない！)。ヤッピ－を皮肉るあたりはこの人たちも大卒のインテリであるプライドみたいなものもあるのでしょうか？

そしてこのリリースされた I.R.S.レーベルなんですが…個人的に好きなんですわ(…REM、GoGo’ｓ、Dred Zeppelinなどが契約していました)。カレッジチャート！で受けのアーティストが多く契約しているレーベルですが、このレーベルにハズレなし！、そんな印象を持っています(イギリスでいうところのラフトレードレーベルみたいな位置付けでしょうかね？？←The Smithsとか)。
ちなみに、I.R.S.の社長のマイルスコープランドはポリスのドラマーのスチュワートコープランドの実兄なんだそうですね。

このベスト盤を通して聴いてみましたが…”TIMBUK3”の各楽曲に大変にセンスを感じました(特徴的な乾いたリバーヴ、残響音！)。
ブルースやロックンロールから離反しつつの、独自のメロディーセンスがよいです。パンクロック以降の活性化されたロックの良い味がでていると思います。3～4分前後のラテン風味のポップス、ファンク、80年代ロック…と言われればそうなんでしょうが約40年近く経過した現在でも新鮮に聴ける楽曲ばかりです。
パットマクドナルドの流麗なハーモニカ、曲のサビになると必ず入る二人のユニゾンのコーラス、使用している楽器やエフェクト、音色、工夫のあるリズム…手作り感を感じつつも決してチープには聴こえない。

YouTubeでも後追いで検索しましたが、ライブ映像もなかなかカッコよいです。女性のバーバラさんは長いブロンド髪とスレンダーなルックスでギターを弾く美人さんでした＾＾
初期のライブではリズムボックスのオケを流しながら二人だけで演奏する動画が アップされていますが、TIMBUK3は楽曲のリズムがだんだん複雑化していく中で、この後ドラマーと黒人ベーシストが加入しています。
こんなセンスの良いバンドを埋もれさせちゃいけませんね。ファーストアルバムなんとか手に入らんかね～
