Practice of the Presence: A Revolutionary Translation by Carmen Acevedo Butcher Audible Audiobook – Unabridged
Since it was first published in its pocket-size 1692 edition, Brother Lawrence's spiritual classic has remained in print, beloved by people of varying spiritual paths and religious traditions. With this new translation, award-winning translator Carmen Acevedo Butcher frees it from its centuries-long prison of dogmatic, binary language and brings fresh, inclusive treatment that listeners are sure to find transformational. Brother Lawrence's years as a humble kitchen worker at a monastery, often remaining in the shadows of his community, gave way to a spiritual life that was profound. Poor, living with a disability, lacking a formal education, enduring a time of plague and civil unrest, he found God in the depths of his soul, experiencing God's loving presence throughout the day. His personal struggles and life-tested spiritual wisdom will resonate with contemporary listeners as he invites us into a practice of Presence that is both accessible and deeply transformative.
For the first time, Brother Lawrence's work is translated by Carmen Acevedo Butcher, a woman of color and a renowned scholar of medieval texts, who creates a dynamic, faithful translation for a new generation of listeners.

Lawrence’s work has always been celebrated for its simple yet profound understanding of how we are experientially steeped in the Mystery of Divine Presence. However, his spiritual advice has often felt stilted in translation and joylessly unapproachable.
Dr. Acevedo Butcher assists us, though, with a modern day colloquial yet evocative translation that companions us with canny guardian-like ability. And that’s what I think makes it so revolutionary. Her translation not only looks out for Lawrence’s texts with historical accuracy, it provides a chatty way in for us as contemporary readers and spiritual seekers. Whether it’s a sweet use of poetic alliteration to bring home a proverbial point (“we must ground ourselves in God’s presence by continually conversing with Love, and that it’s a shame to leave this conversation with our divine Friend for thoughts that are sarcastic or shallow”) or a choice of pronouns for God (a Trinitarian non-gendered “they” and “them”), Dr. Acevedo Butcher invites us in to follow Br. Lawrence’s wisely gentle ways in the midst of today’s most stormy times.
I get a sense that, like Br. Lawrence, Dr. Acevedo Butcher has herself found an inner peace and tenderness that demonstrates how God as Love is available to you and me at any and all moments of everyday life -- no matter what we’re doing. The only thing absent is our awareness and willingness to practice.
Practice of the Presence: A Revolutionary Translation provides a path of learning and practice that is joyfully relevant for today. I am #grateful for this new and wondrous edition that asks us in the introduction to keep an open mind. There are many translations available, but this one will likely now become the standard.
As Br. Lawrence says, the Presence is for all people everywhere: “Everyone is capable of these familiar conversations with God… In the middle of your tasks you can comfort yourself with Love as often as you can…”

Of the more than 25 versions available on Amazon, I chose this one, based on the stellar reviews of this new translation. I'll admit, when I received this book I was initially disappointed. For a book published in 2022, the cover appears dated in style, and when I flipped it open I saw tiny print in an old-fashioned font. I turned to the table of contents, and found that the introduction and translators note take up the first 36 pages. I just wanted Brother Lawrence, and was afraid I had instead received a dry, academic discourse.
And then I began to read. Carmen Acevedo Butcher's style is warm, absorbing, and personal. She has the ability to draw the reader in immediately. She expresses her personal vulnerability and growth through the translation process, without descending into the TMI of so many of today's memoirs. She clearly explains her scholarly perspective and rationale for her translation style in a way that is both accessible and engaging for non-academics. In short, she charmed me. Her introduction and translator's notes truly enrich the words of Brother Lawrence that form the heart of the book.
Brother Lawrence comes alive in this translation. And it is complete: the Maxims that are typically found in other translations are here, as well as his letters, his conversations as recorded by his friends, a biography, and timeline of his life, set in the historical context of the 1600's. Butcher's academic chops are unquestionable, but it is the warmth and accessibility of this translation that shines. I cannot recommend it more highly.
If you desire a deeper relationship with The Holy, a simpler way to pray without ceasing, a spiritual friend and companion to walk with you, this is the book. If you desire an accurate translation of this important work, with a clear underlying philosophical approach, detailed contextual notes, and pages of academic references, this is also the book. If you're looking for Brother Lawrence, this is the book.
To the author, editor and publisher: first, thank you! And as an aside, for the next printing, or the paperback edition, perhaps you might consider revising the cover, font, print size and spacing on the page to reflect the delightful, contemporary warmth of this important work.
