Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

The idea behind Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way is that by writing three pages, longhand and stream-of consciousness, first thing in the morning, you can overcome the obstacles that stop you from becoming your most creative self. This works partly because it forces you to create something (even if it is just a long list of gripes) every single day. It doesn't take much time. You're not even supposed to think. But the act itself gets you past all that self-defeating fretting about why you think you aren't a creative person. Cameron sees her morning pages as "a form of meditation," as "spiritual windshield wipers."

While Cameron touts the morning pages as a way of life, she suggests you start out doing them as part of a "twelve-week program to recover your creativity." If you would like to keep your first twelve weeks of morning pages together in one tidy place, The Artist's Way Morning Pages Journal is a fine tool for doing so. Each nearly blank page features an inspiring quotation from The Artist's Way: "Leap, and the net will appear," says one; "Creativity lies not in the done but in doing," reminds another. We should mention that many of these little inspirations include references to God, which may be troublesome even for spiritual atheists. --Jane Steinberg

Review

Praise for The Artist's Way

“This book has been around for a long time, and I hope it sticks around forever. It guides the reader through a fascinating (and fun) 12-week-long program of exercises and explorations that help loosen up one’s artistic self. It takes you on a journey that will cost you nothing (aside from the guidebook) and it brings much insight, gently helping you see what is holding you back, and showing you how to move forward. Three times in the last decade I've committed to doing The Artist's Way's program, and each time I've learned something important and surprising about myself and my work. Just to show how influential it's been to me—the first time I did the program, I had decided by end of it that I wanted to 1) travel to Italy and learn Italian, 2) Go to an ashram in India, and 3) Return to Indonesia to study with the old medicine man I'd once met there. We all know what
that decision led to. . . Without The Artist's Way, there would have been no Eat, Pray, Love.”
—Elizabeth Gilbert

"
The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron is not exclusively about writing—it is about discovering and developing the artist within, whether a painter, poet, screenwriter, or musician—but it is a lot about writing. If you have always wanted to pursue a creative dream, have always wanted to play and create with words or paints, this book will gently get you started and help you learn all kinds of paying-attention techniques; and that, after all, is what being an artist is all about. It's about learning to pay attention."
—Anne Lamott

"This is a book that addresses a delicate and complex subject. For those who will use it, it is a valuable tool to get in touch with their own creativity."
—Martin Scorsese

This is the best thing ever.It pairs with the book, The Artist’s Way. An incredible book. But the book is nothing without journaling. Journaling and the artist date are the 2 big commitments you need to make to get the full effect out of the book.Anyway, I swear by this journal. I’ve already bought my second one. It really keeps you on track. High quality. Quotes from the book every page. Most importantly it keeps you on track. It’s much much easier than just buying a blank journal and writing in it. Highly recommend!

I should’ve had the journal many years ago to go along with her book. But I’m really enjoying it and I will follow through with her instructions for the use of the journal. Very very nice.

I am on my second book now ... on week 17 of not missing a single morning of writing 3-pages ... I like using her journal book because of the quotes on each page give you something to think about to write. Doing 3 full pages. really makes a difference, more than just a single page it takes me about 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes to write it ... I plan my sleep and my morning around doing my 3-pges each morning ... Also, reading her book that goes with this is great ... I am newly retired (6 months now) and it has really helped me to set the stage for a great retirement new chapter. 5-stars

A therapist actually recommended that I check out the Artist's Way and write morning pages. She did warn me that there's a religious bent to it, and that type of thing puts me off in general, so I skipped the book and went for the Artist's Way Morning Pages Journal.

It does have an explanation of how the morning pages work, and your weekly artist's date. The journal itself is broken down by week, each week has a one page basic summary of what you're supposed to focus on that week, and provides 3 lined pages per day to write. There are quotes from "The Artist's Way" book itself scattered throughout.

I am under the impression however that you're supposed to write about your artist date in addition to the morning pages, and I've seen weekly summaries mentioned by other people. There is not room provided for this, nor is it mentioned in the book (I'm on week two, so perhaps it comes up later, but I doubt it).

Unlike some reviewers I'm glad that the book isn't spiral bound, I hate those things, they always get bent and I somehow end up with pages falling out. I'm a bit rough on things. It's a bit awkward to write in, but not awful. Just lie the whole thing flat on a table. The surface of the paper is rough, but I like writing on it.

I broke down after the second week and purchased "The Artist's Way" (10th edition) to clarify the things I was wondering about. It did help a lot, however there are also exercises to do each week in addition to the morning pages and the artist's dates. I find that a bit overwhelming actually.

There is also a workbook version of "The Artist's Way" with just the exercises and blank space under them to write. Personally I'd like a full book with lined space for the exercises and morning pages and whatnot all in one place. Perhaps with (re)movable (and/or addable) pages. I understand though that it could be a rather unwieldy book.

I'm actually wondering if I should write "night pages". The morning pages are meant to unload your mind so you can get through the day more efficiently without being dragged down by the dreck in your head. But at night my mind is spinning and I can't sleep. I don't know if I keep doing the morning pages if that will clear up too, or I need to write more at night!

Continuing my morning pages practice after I filled the first morning pages journal. The paper thickness, line spacing, and number of pages is hard to find when shopping for similar journals.

This is my second order of The Morning Pages. I processed through The Artist's Way, the companion book to The Morning Pages, beginning in April of last year and it has become a regular part of my morning routine. I plan to continue to cycle through The Artists Way, as I have made many positive advancements after going through this the first time, such as learning piano in my 50s, and becoming much more physically active. Do you need the companion Morning Pages book? No, you could use a notebook, but I find that the overviews of each week are very helpful along with the quotes. I also like the size, it compels me to write more than I would if I use the smaller notebook. If you can afford only one, buy The Artists Way book.

It was great to learn to journal with. A great first journal when following the book. The length, the pages, the inspiration. But after I figured out the time it took to complete my morning pages I went on to purchase other journals.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book will help you to write something
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 21, 2013
This is a review I first wrote in 2001 when I was under my former name!

I was sceptical about another 'how to' system of creative writing. But I am housebound & wanted something to stimulate me, inspire me and this book, together with
The Artist's Way: A Course in Discovering and Recovering Your Creative Self  (the instruction book to this, the Companion Volume or exercise book) has reawakened my writing voice. It is not diary writing. That is usually done at the end of a busy day - so easy to choose sleep in preference to writing.  The Artist's Way: Morning Pages Journal: A Companion Volume to "the Artist's Way"  are where you start the day by offloading worries, celebrating joys, pondering problems, writing a load of rubbish - or it would be to another reader but they are not going to see it so that doesn't matter. You are simply writing to yourself, for yourself.

The Journal is a beautiful book in itself, but not so ornate you feel writing in it would spoil the volume. I thoroughly enjoyed using it and will continue the system in exercise books of my own choice. One day I will buy another of these as a refresher course - perhaps when I need a further boost of Julia Cameron's personal and stimulating advice.

I recommend
The Artist's Way: Morning Pages Journal: A Companion Volume to "the Artist's Way"  as a present to your Creative Self.
