Top reviews from the United States

Not only is the book well written, with wonderful, captivating characters, it has a fantastic plot! Every human in the known universe is a double slave. All have alien masters, all are addicted to a drug that dumbs them down. They are completely docile and under control. But some become infected with a disease that leaves them free of the addiction and “awake”. Enter an alien master that recognizes the advantages of intelligent humans and the evils of slavery. If he can climb to a position with enough power he promises to free the slaves.
Who has the most power? Those with the most credits of course. Possibly you will recognize rich politicians or those behind the scenes as role models for these greedy aliens. I can’t wait for the book to see what happens next.

This is an interesting story of the human race being defeated centuries before the start of the book.
They are now slaves in the worst possible sense.
They are forced onto a drug that keeps them placid and following orders.
They are killed in sporting games, etc.
But there is a Light!
A fun read for me because it comes at this idea in a different way.
Just got book 2.
The adventure continues.

I received this book as a free copy from one of the many emails offering new authors and their offerings. Normally many of these are not up to snuff but Mr. Arsenault has created a story that hums, follows logical progressions and is well plotted, written, and edited. I am now headed back to his page to buy the second book in the series because I am invested in his characters and their desires.

Romping good read if you are a fan of science fiction

Based on the reviews and positive comments on Mr. Arsenault's other series, i took the plunge and got the next two books rather than just number 2. I figure that will keep me for a few days.

The premise of the book is interesting, Humanity spread thru the Stars, built a benevolent interspecies confederation, but were enslaved when a drug that turned humans into idiots was discovered.

10,000 years later some humans are beginning to develop an immunity to the drug. The plot gets a little hazy for me here. We have a refined well off alien that decides such humans who have regained their basic intelligence would be useful tools. In exchange for their help he will supposedly free all Humans as soon as they help him become Emperor... That seems pretty ... unlikely. The writing is a bit on the simple side when showing different POVs. Overall it was a fun story and good but not great.

I enjoyed the unusual premise of this book. The story takes place far into the future - at least 10,000 years. Humans have spread throughout the galaxy - but they've lost their position as a leading civilization. While less advanced species have assimilated all that humanity discovered and accomplished - colonization, interstellar travel and more - human beings have become a race of slaves to all others. They are kept chemically altered by a potent drug known as Shackle, which numbs their natural resistance to enslavement, and are reviled, killed for sport and worked unto death. But now there is a new hope that humanity can be released from this nightmare and set free once again. A virus has been developed which neutralizes the effects of Shackle, and a sympathetic alien influencer wants to help the humans in his charge spread the virus among the slave population, free all slaves and facilitate a new rise to power for their kind. The cast of characters is believable and compelling, and the tale of how this disparate group of newly freed slaves accomplish their goal is compelling. I recommend this book.

I loved this book and can't wait to read the rest of the series. Stephen Arseneault's previous series, which I highly recommend as well, typically have Humanity attacked by aliens and Humans improving their technology with each battle and win over the aliens. [Previous series in order are SODIUM, AMP, OMEGA, HADRON, ARMS. SODIUM is a little rough as his first work but still worth reading, and OMEGA differs in that the protagonist isn't Human but the antagonist is.] FREEDOM breaks his tendencies by having Humans suffering in slavery under their alien overlords. They are forced to struggle and navigate their way from a position of ultimate weakness. However, the challenges and solutions are as brilliant and as entertaining as always.

Unique and building storyline. I'm intrigued enough to get the entire series so I can find out what happens. A lot of characters but surprisingly easy to keep track of.

5.0 out of 5 stars Arseneault Redeems Humans AND Science

Stephen Arseneault is AWARE. His modest heroes live out fantastic science Fiction on a believable human scale rare in the genre. This story grabs attention as his downtrodden humans rise up against their heartless hairy dictators who daily get away with murder. Arseneault's social satire is gut-funny at the same time as it's a horrifying mirror.
I'm sure the unfolding will satisfy my hunger for the "Strange Factor", while continuing to reflect ordinary life in todays tyranny. Psychologist Paul McGaffey

2.0 out of 5 stars shallow
Reviewed in Germany on June 26, 2018
Boring, shallow writing. The author doesn't tell a story, he just reiterates plot points. I am currently at 79% and still can't recognize characters, to call them two dimensional would be greatly overstating the characterization.
As the world-building goes, it's uninspired and lazy. Protagonists spend less time traveling the galaxy as I am getting to the office in the morning. Don't forget instantaneous FTL communication, it is a mystery for me, why people write about interstellar civilization and remove anything that would differentiate interstellar travel and communication from going to a post box on the corner or calling my aunt in the neighbor city.

He’s done it again! What s story and what potential for a fantastic series!
Nothing I wouldn’t expect from Stephen and the only downside is waiting for him to write the next episode!
On s slight downside the cost of a series dies mount up a little but I can’t help myself. I enjoy his wring far too much!!

Good stories, well told. But the author and his editors need to work on locating and fixing homophones. There aren't so many that they're off-putting, but they were jarring when they were found.
