FAST at scanning books into Word, and scanning color photos
[Unfortunately, the photos are being displayed in the incorrect order. So, they should be numbered 3, 6, 1, 2, 5, 7, 4]This is my review of the "CZUR Shine Ultra" scanner, model "Shine 1300A3 Pro"I first want to mention the box in which the scanner is delivered.  In my first photo I show the box after the scanner is removed.  You can see the other items that come with the scanner.  The box is so well designed that you will want to keep it for whenever you store or travel with or ship the scanner.Unlike a flatbed scanner where you insert a page, close the lid, and wait for a scanning light to pass over the document (or the document to feed over a light), this CZUR scanner takes a quick photo from above of whatever is sitting below it on your table. The scanner has two USB ports: one connects to a foot pedal for activating a scan, and the other connects to your computer for transferring the scanned images. The scanner also draws its power from that second USB cord. A black pad with a non-skid backing is provided upon which you put the materials to be scanned. So, when not in use, you roll up the pad and fold up the scanner, thus taking very little space (unlike a flatbed scanner). When scanning, you first indicate whether you are scanning an open book or a flat object (among other options).  If you are scanning a book, it's scanning two pages at a time. There are 3 methods to initiate the scan: (1) click the Scan button on your computer screen, (2) step on the foot pedal [included in the package], or (3) click on auto scan.  It's this 3rd option that's really impressive when you are scanning a book:  the scanner knows when you have turned the page in the book, so it automatically scans the next page.  It can scan pages almost as fast as you can turn the pages. Maybe 2 seconds per pair of pages. And the pages do not have to be flattened (in fact, if it's a book, the pages won't be flattened!).  The scanner can handle curved pages [refer to my 2nd and 3rd photos].  So, you scan pairs of pages, the software separates the pages and "flattens" them.  Then you can batch all of the scanned pages together through an OCR routine (included as part of the package) to convert the images into words! - either for MS Word or Excel - or it can output a .pdf file.  However, there are limits to how curved the pages can be.  In my 4th and 5th photos you can see the results of not putting more care into your efforts.  By the way, you can hold down the pages with your fingers or with a pair of supplied plastic "holders," and the software knows to ignore them. The scanner does a good job of scanning color photos, also.  Not a great job, but a very good job.  You see in my 6th and 7th photos that the scanned picture does not have to be set straight before scanning.  The software does an excellent job of straightening the photo (or any other flat object).  Again, you can activate a scan by using the foot pedal, or  you can put it into auto mode.  In auto mode, it knows when you are removing a photo and putting another one onto the table.  So, you can scan photos almost as fast as you can replace them onto the table.  I had been hoping that the software would let me put several photos onto the table at the same time and separate them into separate files (it does not do that), but with the auto mode, doing one at a time is almost as fast as laying out several onto the table.  So, I'm not complaining. (Maybe they'll add that capability in the near future?) I had a minor problem with scanning my glossy photos: the light caused glare on the photos, but that was easily cured by moving the photos off-center.Regarding documentation: They provide 2 text files: "Software manual" and "User manual." The Software manual contains detailed usage instructions for post-processing (such as adjusting the appearance of photos or sending text to Word). But it does not explain how to do the actual scanning and all of the options. Detailed scanning instructions are provided through online videos - but those move quickly and I found them difficult to understand. Also, I could not find the Software manual online, only on the installation CD that comes with the product. The User manual explains the different parts of the scanner hardware. It is available on the CD and online.Scanning and post-processing are designed around European and Asian paper sizes, not the US standard 8.5x11. However, I'm not sure if it matters. When sending scanned pages to Word, it's Word that defines the page size, and the contents are wrapped page-to-page accordingly. (Hopefully, an 8.5x11 option will be added to the software?)After installing the software from the provided CD, it said that I needed to download a newer version. My Bitdefender antivirus program labeled the download of the setup program to be "infected."  However, I trusted CZUR and set Bitdefender to allow the download. Then I ran into another problem after installing: it kept aborting! However, an email sent to tech support was answered immediately and I was provided with a very simple fix (a config.ini replacement file) - and then it worked great! When first using the program, you need to ensure that the scanner frequency is set properly in the "Settings" area.   In the US, it should be set to 60Hz instead of 50Hz. When adjusting the appearance of a photo, there are options for "contrast,"  "sharpness," and "thickness."  "Thickness" refers to darker/lighter.Scanning options include "auto," "color," "B&W," and "stamps."   The Stamps mode refers to B&W documents that contain blue stamps, such as approval markings."Truth in advertising:" You need to know that CZUR offered this scanner to me for free if I were to write an honest review in Amazon. My review has not been biased by their gift to me. And I can honestly say that I am impressed with this scanner and give it high praises for its intended uses. Note, though, that this is not the scanner you want if your primary use is to produce high-quality scans of color pages or pictures.

Great scanner, here's what I thought about it broken down by different aspects:

-Packaging
Comes in a nice, sturdy box with a handle so you can easily carry it and pack it up in an organized way when you're storing it between scanning sessions.

-Software
The software it comes with is straightforward and easy to use. I really didn't even read the manual, I just installed the software, plugged in the scanner, and figured it out and started scanning in like 5 minutes.

-Functionality
How it works is it comes with a black mat, you put your book/paper on it and select single page mode or book mode. Single page mode scans one object at a time, and it automatically crops the page against the black background; there are some finger tabs for holding pages flat and the scanner software automatically makes them disappear. For book mode, it scans two pages at once, and splits each page into its own separate image. I have attached some example scans from this product, compare it to the setup photo I took with my phone - even though the page isn't level, it automatically flattens the perceived curve from the camera snapshot, so you don't need to fiddle with making the pages flat. The cropping and page flattening is great, it just works. When you're done scanning, you can export all the images as various document types such as word/pdf, or you can leave them as images. Of course, you can choose where to save the base images to help keep organized. My wife also uses this in her classroom as a visual presenter where she can put a page underneath and write on it, and project it in real time on her projector.

-Quality
I have attached photos for black/white mode, color mode, and a final word document export. I should also mention, the export automatically processes the image to identify words and does a great job. I picked a page with tiny text on a 5"x8" book and you can see from my attached images that the camera is good enough even for tiny text, and can accurately translate that into a word document. Note that for some glossy pages, the light can reflect back to the camera and reduce quality, but for matte surfaces and "regular" paper, it performs excellent.

-Speed
It comes with a foot clicker so you can fully use your hands to flip and position pages without slowing down. Flip the page, give the camera a second to focus, press the foot clicker and repeat. As you scan, you can see a preview image and it's pretty apparent if something went wrong, maybe 1 out of 2-300 page flips or so I find I want to do a rescan which is totally fine for me. Depending on how focused I am, I flip a page every 2-4 seconds, on average maybe 15-20 page flips a minute, so that's around 300 pages in 10 minutes! Which I think is super good.

Overall it's straightforward to use, takes good quality scans, exports files well, and scans through books quickly. I am very satisfied with this purchase and recommend this for anyone who wants good, fast scans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast, easy to use scanner with great results

Great scanner, here's what I thought about it broken down by different aspects:

-Packaging
Comes in a nice, sturdy box with a handle so you can easily carry it and pack it up in an organized way when you're storing it between scanning sessions.

-Software
The software it comes with is straightforward and easy to use. I really didn't even read the manual, I just installed the software, plugged in the scanner, and figured it out and started scanning in like 5 minutes.

-Functionality

You have to be careful with focusing and keeping the pages still, it won't scan small papers clearly sometimes, and the light does make scanning glossy surfaces a chore... but this thing is perfectly adequate for most use-case-scenarios. If you're scanning things like 30 page comic books or manuals, this will do a phenomenal job... if not a perfect one. This isn't a miracle device. You will have errors before you get good practice. It's not *crystal* clear. But it's not a one-trick-pony either.

I've used this to scan a 500-page massive text book, paperbacks, hardcovers (easier than paperbacks for me), family photos, handwritten notes, and as a top-down webcam for teaching, all to perfectly usable success. For larger documents, if you're willing to sacrifice some resolution, you can boost the device's height on a box and get some black fabric, making the scannable area larger. OCR still works in common use.

And oh yes, something that this device excels in is it's desktop software's OCR function. *Excellent.* Those who use speech-to-text software will be *very pleased* with this device. One can simply copy and paste text right out of one's digitized books on one's computer. You will likely not be disappointed with it's OCR, for sure.

The device comes with everything you need. If your skin-tone doesn't work well with the automatic finger-removal function of the software, the box supplies you with "finger cots" which very accurately allow you to prop the book open with no fear of distracting artifacts. It comes with a foot pedal to scan the pages with, and also automatic scanning in the software which sees when you turn a page all by itself. Very nice packaging as well, very easy to understand. This company, Czur, is known for their excellent packaging.

The speed of the scanning this device can do is actually very impressive. More destructive techniques may be faster, but I've scanned a 300 page novel in 10 minutes. You can do the math there, but that's pretty darn good.

Something you may have noticed with minimal research is that this company makes other scanners that look similar. I can confirm to you that for consumer use, this scanner may have a lower resolution than the (tempting) $600+ scanner that they sell, but this model is more portable, and its resolution is *perfectly* adequate for all common users, I would say.

Do your research. Look at reviews. But if you are in need of a non-destructive book and document scanner that is portable (fits in my small backpack) and will scan pretty darn fast and in good quality, along with the best OCR software I've realistically ever used, and all for personal use, and don't need higher resolution (which most people shouldn't), this device is probably the best you can buy from Czur.

Have a nice one.

Pros:
1. Faster than a regular scanner
2. Easy to use
3. Better on the books
Cons:
1. Camera doesn't handle glossy pages well
2. Some books have some damage to the spine due to forcing them flat enough.

I bought this scanner because I'm planning to move and don't want to take my hundreds of books with me, but I don't want to get rid of them. So I started scanning them into PDF's. It's very time-consuming, and pressing the books flat on a printer/scanner destroyed the binding.
I started with my own writing, diaries, loose leafs of papers with printed or hand-written stories, etc. This device was a god-send. It was very easy to use and quickly turned years of writing into a handful of PDF's on my computer. As I've turned my attention to the handful of paperback and print books that I want to preserve, it's a little more complicated.
For starters, it's still time-consuming, just less so. The camera tends to create a glare on glossy pages and you still have to lay the book fairly flat, though not as much as a flat bed scanner.
Take this book for example, it's a manga I picked up in Brazil on a trip and if I give it away I doubt I will ever find it again, so I wanted an electronic copy.
You can see that the cover and first few pages are glossy and there is a noticeable glare spot. Not bad on the cover, but in places it interferes with reading. The matte pages are excellent quality. The process took slightly less than an hour, maybe forty-five minutes or leisurely work (with some editing and cropping after the scanning). The book is still serviceable, but you can see the binding has been bent a bit.
I recommend this product, but wanted to show real results so you can judge for yourself.

It doesn't help with scanning. It makes scanning more difficult.
For returning you have to pay shipping and they charge you 20% restock.
After complaining they refunded me this 20%.

1.0 out of 5 stars Expensive torch

I paid £210.98 for a source of light. First thing, the provided CD-ROM didn't work, whirring and grinding something awful as if burning to disc. I removed that and decided on downloading the software from the website. Probably safer. Did that, hooked up the machine, followed the instructions, 'looking for device...' Device could not be located. I followed all the steps to see if it could be found, but no. The scanner felt flimsy to me and... empty. No sound, no nothing. Cold to the touch. Like, you know when something's dead, including hardware, it loses its warmth, its heat, the light goes out, there's nothing there. It was like that. It didn't feel like there was anything in it (or to it). An expensive torch, headlamp of a troll. Of course I'm on a deadline so this was really helpful (SARCASM) - overseas delivery wait and then the faff of the return. Obviously I'm returning it for a refund. I'll replace it with something at a fraction of the price that I bet will work just fine.
