“Alex Michaelides hits the trifecta with his third novel, The Fury. The highly original story presents the reader with the king of all unreliable narrators, enough twists and turns to power two novels, and a host of characters that bleed right on the page. ” ―David Baldacci

A masterfully paced thriller about a reclusive ex–movie star and her famous friends whose spontaneous trip to a private Greek island is upended by a murder ― from the #1
New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Patient

This is a tale of murder.

Or maybe that’s not quite true. At its heart, it’s a love story, isn’t it?

Lana Farrar is a reclusive ex–movie star and one of the most famous women in the world. Every year, she invites her closest friends to escape the English weather and spend Easter on her idyllic private Greek island.

I tell you this because you may think you know this story. You probably read about it at the time ― it caused a real stir in the tabloids, if you remember. It had all the necessary ingredients for a press sensation: a celebrity; a private island cut off by the wind…and a murder.

We found ourselves trapped there overnight. Our old friendships concealed hatred and a desire for revenge. What followed was a game of cat and mouse ― a battle of wits, full of twists and turns, building to an unforgettable climax. The night ended in violence and death, as one of us was found murdered.

But who am I?

My name is Elliot Chase, and I’m going to tell you a story unlike any you’ve ever heard.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Gloriously atmospheric and utterly riveting, this is my favourite Alex Michaelides yet. Readers you are in for a treat! But then what else would you expect from the undisputed master of the twist?"
―Lucy Foley, New York Times bestselling author of The Paris Apartment and The Guest List

“Alex Michaelides hits the trifecta with his third novel, The Fury. The highly original story presents the reader with the king of all unreliable narrators, enough twists and turns to power two novels, and a host of characters that bleed right on the page. For fans of erudite, locked room mysteries told with style and theatrical panache, The Fury delivers, on all counts.”
―David Baldacci

“A classic, twisting, brilliant murder mystery. A wonderfully drawn cast of characters with a motive to kill for, in a location to die for, keep you guessing until the shocking finale. Clever, and fiendishly fun.”
―Chris Whitaker, New York Times bestselling author of We Begin at the End

“The Fury, like its beguiling narrator, is endlessly evolving, wildly entertaining, and like the very best fiction, impossible to pin down. Just when you think you have it cornered, it moves, impossibly and with stunning flourish, toward a devastating finale. The Talented Mr. Ripley for our time.”
―Blake Crouch, New York Times bestselling author of Dark Matter

"Audacious, twisty, compelling, and full of the joyous verve that one only finds in the very best storytelling, this is the best novel yet from Alex Michaelides."
―Sophie Hannah

“You’ll think you know where it’s going and you couldn’t be more wrong.”
―Linwood Barclay

"A very sophisticated book which takes the format of a classic murder mystery and elevates it to something very devious and clever indeed. The narrator is fabulous -- I was thoroughly gripped by his voice and it seems to have been written with great glee. There's such a tremendous complicity to it even though the reader has no idea how much of what he's telling is true, even down to the final pages. The way it reveals itself through the layers of the narrative is very well done indeed."
―Harriet Tyce, author of Blood Orange

"Alex Michaelides is the grand master of the modern mystery. The Fury reads like Hitchcock with a heart, or Agatha Christie running amok on a wind-whipped Greek island. A tale of old friends and buried emotions ready to explode, all set on an idyllic island rendered so perfectly you can smell the jasmine, the ouzo and the Aegean Sea. The Fury will, quite literally, blow you away. Totally brilliant."
―Tony Parsons, author of Who She Was

“The Fury by Alex Michaelides is a proper, grown-up thriller that exudes class from every page. So much more than a murder mystery, every twist and turn is simultaneously a total surprise and completely inevitable. The writing is perfectly sparse, yet cloaks a narrative of rare complexity. So many contradictions, yet all unite in a devastating whole. The Fury is a very special book and highly recommended.”
―Janice Hallett, author of international bestseller The Appeal

"Glamorous, sinister, and endlessly surprising, The Fury reads like Agatha Christie and Patricia Highsmith took a Greek vacation together and decided to write a book while there. It's twisty, twisted entertainment."
―Riley Sager, New York Times bestselling author of The Only One Left

“A glorious triumph―just brilliant.”
―Stephen Fry

"This is a masterclass in suspense. A unique and captivating narrator takes you on a journey filled with twists and finely drawn characters you will treasure. This is probably his best book. Not to be missed."
―Steve Cavanagh, author of Thirteen and Kill for Me, Kill for You

“One of those rare books where really nothing is as it seems. As usual, Alex Michaelides does not disappoint.”
―Ragnar Jonasson

"The Fury is a masterfully woven story of Shakespearean twists and Machiavellian turns. A Greek Tragedy in the guise of a postmodern thriller. Do not miss this one."
―Holly Jackson, #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Good Girl's Guide to Murder

"Mesmerising―a beguiling labyrinth of twists and surprises, even better than The Silent Patient. The Fury is The Magus meets The Secret History on a Greek island paradise where nothing is as it seems, and Alex Michaelides is a master magician, skilfully misdirecting the reader at every turn."
―JP Delaney

“Shades of Agatha Christie and Sunset Boulevard color this outstanding psychological thriller …Michaelides keeps readers on deliciously unsteady ground throughout, ratcheting up the tension until he arrives at the final series of reveals. The result is a character-driven, atmospheric delight.

Publishers Weekly

“From the author of
The Silent Patient comes another perfectly-paced thriller that will have you looking at your friends with a hint of suspicion… It unfolds so satisfyingly well, you just might want to block off a weekend to read it all in one.”
Good Housekeeping | 12 Most Anticipated Books of 2024

"Michaelides again creates an almost tangible blend of tension,
manipulation, and obsession. Even readers will fall prey to Michaelides' craft, nudged into
shifting, sympathetic allegiances to the damaged, unlikable characters in this pitch-perfect,
classic crime set-up and modern psychological thriller."
Booklist

“Alex Michaelides is a master…Intriguing and page-turning,
The Fury is Michaelides at his best, which is saying a lot after the success of The Silent Patient.”
―GMA.com | 15 New Books to Read for the New Year

"A dazzling whodunit, much like his bestselling novels
The Silent Patient and The Maidens. But The Fury sets itself apart by adding [a] dose of Old Hollywood glamour and intrigue...like the love child between Sunset Boulevard’s Billy Wilder and Agatha Christie."
―Bustle

“Michaelides wrote the huge best-seller
The Silent Patient, so he’s got a few tricks up his sleeve with this new novel…Elliot Chase, our unreliable narrator, owes a bit to Tom Ripley; he might also remind readers of Barry Keoghan’s character in Saltburn.”
―Vulture

“Michaelides’s deliciously twisty and fiendishly clever third novel takes the classic locked-room mystery and delivers a fresh spin on the genre... What sets the book apart is its innovative structure and the compelling voice of its narrator, Elliot Chase; wonderfully sinister and beautifully unreliable, he guides us – with sleights of hand aplenty – through this impressive and highly enjoyable tale of subterfuge, secrets and murder.”
―The Guardian

“Alex Michaelides delivers a terrific spin on the Agatha Christie classic
, And Then There Were None, with a dash of the film Glass Onion in his latest thriller...Readers who have enjoyed Michaelides’ previous books will find this one his best yet…”
Criminal Element, Best Psychological Thrillers in January

The Fury is well-plotted ― a murder mystery in the style of Knives Out with the sensibilities of Hamlet (“the play’s the thing!”) and Rebecca woven-in to great effect. There’s adultery, drugs and a mysterious groundskeeper. What’s not to like!?”
―Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

“Alex Michaelides is a master of the unreliable narrator…
The Fury is pure Agatha Christie-esque fun.”
―The Boston Globe

I don’t like mystery novels, it’s just not my genre. I tend to go for Fantasy and Sci-Fi. Anything set in the real world, and I lose interest. Alex Michaelides is a rare exception. The Fury plays on classic mystery tropes while submerging expectation and providing a very twisted ending. As Elliot Chase writes in the book, “If anything, it’s a whydunit—a character study, an examination of who we are; and why we do the things we do.” The book dives deep into the thoughts and choices made by each character, examining them through the eyes of an unreliable and opinionated narrator. Michaelides’ newest novel is ceaselessly entertaining, I highly recommend getting a copy.

THE FURY
Alex Michaelides

Everything you need to know to be prepared for a five-star experience is in the synopsis. Everything you need for a five-star reading experience is in this book.

Let’s talk about THE FURY!

In THE FURY we are following a group of friends on a private Greek Island called Aura. Lana Farrar, the ex-movie star, has invited her very close friends to unwind and relax over Easter weekend.

By the end of the weekend, plans unravel, secrets are revealed, and someone ends up dead. We learn the who, the what, and most importantly the why, in this spectacular “WHYDUNIT” by Alex Michaelides, out January 2024!

I spent a weekend reading THE FURY. The first thing I noticed was how intentional the writing was. Thought and time and care went into thinking about what the words were saying, where the sentence was landing, and how the reader was experiencing the book.

I had a spectacular and unforgettable reading experience.

Just as the painting was in THE SILENT PATIENT, so is the wind in the fury. It’s a non-human entity that acts much like a character. It interacts with the scene; it has its own behavior and becomes just as vocal and informative as the dialogue between characters.

There are elements carried over from both THE SILENT PATIENT and THE MAIDENS. THE FURY is synergistic and felt like the culmination of something bigger than itself.

The sum of many parts.
There is something here for every reader out there and will be particularly compelling for die-hard thriller fans. This is the one you’ve been waiting for.

I cannot wait to hear this as an audiobook and I’m 100% rereading this with you when it comes out in January 2024.

Finally, again a book by Michaelides well worth the price of admission.
If this is the show, I want a ticket!

THE FURY...⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thanks to Celadon Books for the advanced copy and the awesome opportunity to provide early feedback!

Little wonder ratings are low for this would-be thriller. I'm disappointed in Michaelides--yet again! Didn't like The Silent Patient either. But this mish-mash is worse. Yes, the author keeps us misled with red herrings, but at no time is there really any tension...essential to a so-called thriller. I'm shocked that David Baldacci, who knows how to write so well, wrote nice things about this book. Michaelides is a Cypriot Greek, and we would like to see/get some color of place about this Greek Island. We do not. The best characters are the indigenous Greek caretaker and the woman assisting the "star." The rest of the bunch are dreary and unlikeable. Good writers make you empathize with, relate to, or like the protagonist. Not this narrator, who is akin to an idiot. The struggle Michaelides has with voice, that is, perspective, is beneath anyone pretending to be an author. He would have been drummed out of most writing seminars; first person is tricky enough to employ, but here we switch from one perspective to another and to another within the same chapter. No writing instructor, even today when it is less important, would allow this. Would grade it C or D. I am a lover of Cyprus and admire Cypriots, just not this one. Sorry.

The Silent Patient was one of the first books in a long time that had me gobsmacked at the ending. I loved being shocked-it was an amazing read and is still at the top of my list of best books I’ve read in the last two years. So, it was with excitement and a little anxiety that I looked forward to The Fury’s release date. The Fury is a master class in storytelling, but differently than you likely expect. The only thing that bummed me out a bit was I figured out the ending, (and it’s not a straight forward one), about 3/4 into the book. I will say however my theory did evolve and change slightly as I kept reading, but in the end it held. So, while I didn’t get the “I didn’t see that coming!” moment, the storytelling, the way AM wove each character’s back stories together, while still leaving each character wonderfully three dimensional, mixing in golden age movie references intermingled with
scenes set on stage and back stage during a live stage production rehearsal was brilliant. Maybe it’s the theatre geek in me or more likely Alex Michaelide’s is an astonishingly good writer who pulls from all areas of his experience and crafts something different and compelling each time he sets pen to paper, (or fingers on laptop, but pen to paper is such beautiful imagery especially in this case). And speaking of imagery, the book puts you there, the characters, the setting-it’s all brought to life stunningly. Fovero!

A generous 4 stars.

A slow start and a story filled with beautiful descriptions of places and food that made me wish to take the next flight back to Greece.
I simultaneously listened to the audiobook. The audiobook had more words than my paperback edition.

Here is a simple example:

Book: “A small figure was…”
Audiobook: “ There was a small figure…”

Book: “That the guns…”
Audiobook: “ The fact that the guns…”

Book: some times a pronoun was used
Audiobook: that pronoun was substituted by the character’s name.

Anyways, those differences were not a big deal but I thought I should mention.

I thought that this book was much better than “The Maidens”, but not as thrilling as “The Silent Patient”.

I enjoyed the writing and specially the narrative, but the development of the storyline was very slow.
Regardless, I did find it very atmospheric, hence my ratings.

The chapters are very short and well constructed, but no characters are likeable and unfortunately I did not connect with a single one.
As for the narrator, there was no way that he could have known everything.

Paperback (Celadon Books): 299 pages (or 320 pages if cover to cover - so many empty pages and spaces - I felt cheated). It’s divided into 5 acts, and most of the chapters are very short.

ebook (Kobo): 217 pages (default), 67k words

audiobook narrated by Alex Jennings: 8.1 hours (normal speed)
