Review
“Once again, John W. Whitehead shows himself to be a thorough reporter, an insightful scholar and a tireless defender of the Constitution. Battlefield America is the most penetrating, eye-opening proof to date of the imperialist government’s desecration of our constitutional personal liberties. Battlefield America is not only a warning of the danger ahead but also a detailed, systematic illustration of how a once freedom-loving nation can descend into tyranny. A must-read for anyone concerned about how to get us back on the road to becoming a self-governing republic. Citizens, journalists, activists, government officials—any and all Americans who have so little inkling about what it really means to be an American and actively safeguard our freedoms against all dangers, foreign and domestic—should take the time to become acquainted with this book. Students and teachers, especially, should make it a priority to debate and discuss this book in their classrooms.” —Nat Hentoff, syndicated columnist and historian

About the author
John W. Whitehead is an attorney and author who has written, debated and practiced widely in the area of constitutional law and human rights. Whitehead’s concern for the persecuted and oppressed led him, in 1982, to establish The Rutherford Institute, a nonprofit civil liberties and human rights organization whose international headquarters are located in Charlottesville, Virginia. Deeply committed to protecting the constitutional freedoms of every American and the integral human rights of all people, The Rutherford Institute has emerged as a prominent leader in the national dialogue on civil liberties and human rights and a formidable champion of the Constitution. Whitehead serves as the Institute’s president and spokesperson.
Widely recognized as one of the nation’s most vocal and involved civil liberties attorneys, Whitehead’s approach to civil liberties issues has earned him numerous accolades and accomplishments, including the Hungarian Medal of Freedom and the 2010 Milner S. Ball Lifetime Achievement Award for “[his] decades of difficult and important work, as well as [his] impeccable integrity in defending civil liberties for all.”
As nationally syndicated columnist Nat Hentoff observed about Whitehead: “John Whitehead is not only one of the nation’s most consistent and persistent civil libertarians. He is also a remarkably perceptive illustrator of our popular culture, its insights and dangers. I often believe that John Whitehead is channeling the principles of James Madison, who would be very proud of him.”
Born in 1946 in Tennessee, John W. Whitehead earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Arkansas in 1969 and a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Arkansas School of Law in 1974. He served as an officer in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971. He lives in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Even for those of us who have more or less followed the evolution of world geopolitics/sociology in the last few years, there is something else to be learned. I am sure it took a lot of courage to write this book. I have only seen before in other published work, fragments of what is dealt with in this book, but not the whole "enchilada." The quotations are very opportune, which is not usually the case, and the references very complete and abundant.
What is there to be criticized? I'd have liked to see at least some discussion of how the future will be affected now that the universal bully finds it cannot keep the same behavior unchanged, because there are constraints imposed by other countries, powerful enough to have a say in world matters. And also, how the world will be affected in the short term, when the financial crisis hits in full intensity, and the bully is forced to admit it cannot meet its obligations. I'll be obliged if anybody can tell me where a discussion of these matters can be found.
Last but not least, there is the matter of the possibility of changing something about the future, by whatever means, which very few authors want to deal with. All feel the obligation to give some hope. Whitehead doesn't, and I agree. Things have gone too far already, and there is no way to stop the process. I know this sounds pessimistic. Correct me if I am wrong. In short, I can't recommend it more strongly.
