Update 2022: I sold this lens as it did not autofocus with my Nikon Z camera bodies which I now use alongside Nikon DSLRs. Tamron had no plans to offer a firmware update to correct that. It was a good all-around lens for F-mount bodies nonetheless.
In the context of a 10.7x zoom, this VC PZD (Nikon) version of the Tamron 28-300mm lens performs very well throughout its range. As a 10.7x zoom, it's a general purpose lens suited to a wide variety of subjects. As the phrase suggests, it's a jack of all trades, master of none. Image quality typically benefits from being stopped down at tad from wide open for optimum results but the lens performs surprisingly well even wide open, again, throughout its range.
Handling: The lens offers full-time manual focus override; VC works very well. The focus and zoom rings rotate in the same direction as found on Nikon lenses (so it's easy to go back and forth between this and Nikon-made lenses: I've used the 3rd party brand that goes the other way and, with other Nikon zooms in my kit, this small detail makes use much more intuitive). The 1:3.5 close focus ratio is very handy and capable of yielding commendable close-up images.
Optical performance: Colour is neutral. Contrast is good (benefiting from being stopped down a bit but recoverable in post if not). Centre and edge sharpness is very good throughout the range. Extreme corners at 28mm are a little weak even stopped down but I have seen similar performance in name-brand f/2.8 zooms sold at twice the price and more: This is something to be aware of but, again, in the context of a 10x zoom, it's improbable to expect optical perfection. Distortion is present through the range and often innocuous. In subjects involving straight lines (such as architecture), it's largely correctable via post-processing.
Caveats: With a variable aperture of f/3.5-6.3, it is not a fast lens but if you know your camera settings and employ appropriate settings for the subject and environment, results are excellent to very good; in ultra low light, look for a tripod, use flash or boost your ISO dramatically.
VC (aka VR) is very effective but the camera operator has to use appropriate settings to avoid blur due to subject movement. VC (VR in Nikon parlance) doesn't correct subject movement.
Also, be aware that the lens hood -- which attaches securely and affords good basic protection for the front element -- casts a shadow if on-camera flash is used at wide angle/ close focus. It's common to many such lenses of every brand: Just be aware of it and avoid it. (take the hood off)
At close focus, the lens exhibits a significant amount of focus breathing (meaning at 300mm at close focus it is operating more like a lens in the range of 200mm+). It's inherent in the design of this and many other lenses; at longer distances it operates like the 300mm lens its specs imply.
Versatility and convenience: While I am fortunate to have numerous lenses at my disposal that cover an even broader focal range and afford additional creative options, this relatively light and small lens simply cannot be beat for convenience, not only in focal range but also in close-focus. Within its focal and aperture ranges, the pictures this lens is capable of yielding are limited mainly by the imagination and skill of the user, not by any imperfections inherent in the lens. Small and relatively light, while I use it on a Nikon FX body, it's extremely handy in DX mode, too (offering a 42-450mm field of view). While faster, lower zoom ratio -- and typically more expensive, bigger and heavier -- lenses 'may' yield as good or better corner-to-corner sharpness with less effort (meaning: some things shot with the 28-300 can still be made up in post), they won't offer the convenience and flexibility of a 10.7x zoom lens: The pictures you don't get while changing lenses -- or if you don't have a particular lens with you -- aren't going to bring lasting enjoyment to anyone.
Compared to Nikon's 28-300 version which costs more, weighs more and performs similarly according to the many online tests I have seen and you can find, the only benefit I can see to the Nikon is firmware compatibility should Nikon ever alter camera programming. Also, for Nikon's auto-focus fine-tune (for which I made a small change for this lens and which is something I do for pretty well every lens I use), while I don't presently have another Tamron lens, there's a chance Nikon won't recognize more than one Tamron lens which would be problematic should I have multiple Tamron lenses with different AFFT values.
Value: If I were to have only one lens, it would be this lens. Purchased on Amazon from an Amazon seller offering full domestic warranty.
I bought it for a vacation where I didn't want to bring multiple lenses for different ranges and it worked very well.
There is some minor vignetting at the 28mm end but with the range of zoom this is to be expected.
Very sharp in the center, the aperture allows for decent low light performance.
I use this lens on a canon 6D.
