Retired Lt. Colonel Rip Rawlings has written an entertaining and accurate account of how a lone platoon of Marine reservists, National Guard soldiers, and civilians might band together to fight an invasion on US soil. I like how he chose to focus on a small section of the country and this particular group's conflict rather than turning it into a global "James Bond saves the world" scenario. The protagonist is a marine officer who could be your next door neighbor. He fought in Iraq, was wounded there, and now is in charge of a joint Marine/National Guard reserve unit. He has flaws and can at times question his own decisions - but when the bullets begin to fly and his troops need a leader - he's a battle-tested squared-away Marine from head to toe. The supporting cast includes some very interesting characters including a Navy Commander Physician, a blind former General, and a civilian Hillbilly sharp shooter named Blue that reminded me of Alvin York before he became a WWI hero. This guy could shoot the wing off a fly resting on a horse's tail at a thousand yards.
If you like accurate depictions of war, with just the right level of technical descriptions and characters you can easily relate to, then ASSAULT BY FIRE is your must-read book of the fall of 2020. Bravo, Colonel. Can't wait for more Tyce Asher stories.

Book Review – I first took notice of retired Marine Lt. Colonel H. Ripley Rawlings when he co-authored “Red Metal” with Author Mark Greaney. No military action thriller author depicts battlefield tactics and execution better than Lt. Colonel Rawlings. His detailed writings of warfare are not only impressive, but extremely vivid and realistic. Rawlings’ first standalone book “Assault by Fire” was a decent read but Rawlings’ second standalone “The Kill Box”, exceeded my expectations. The quality of his ‘storytelling’ improved, and his battlefield knowledge was re-emphasized in The Kill Box. This second novel cements his recognition as the leader in military tactics and execution in the military thriller genre of today. It’s obvious that former military, turned authors, write descriptive and accurate depictions of combat that provides instant and accurate visualization. The story is about a Russian invasion of America and reminds me of the 1984 film, “Red Dawn.” The storyline begins after the Russians have control on American soil and are attempting to strengthen their gains, but they have one major problem to deal with; a tough and hard-hitting Marine named Tyce Asher! Asher has a band of courageous ‘weekend warriors’ who fled into the hills during the Russian attack. The plot revolves around the Russians trying to finish off the larger American military units still fighting, but Asher and his ‘merry band of patriot rebels’ have something to say about the “Russkies” invading their land. So, let the ‘throw downs’ (battles) begin! Rawlings writes a brilliant and gripping military action thriller of what could plausibly happen in present day. Nothing beats actual battlefield knowledge and experience in military battle scenes and Rawlings displays that in this must-read novel. He depicts the men and women in uniform in this narrative as willing to step forward and give their lives if needed to save our nation from enemies, domestic or foreign. To move forward, no matter what, to achieve the mission. And Lt. Colonel Rawlings gives us some first-hand ‘insider’ insight into the fighting men and women of the military in The Kill Box. It is one military action thriller you don’t want to miss. Action Thriller readers will love the battlefield fights, the courage displayed, and the audacity revealed by a heartily “Leatherneck” Marine named Tyce Asher!

Bravo Zulu Colonel !

This is the FIRST solo book by the author after a very succesful pairing with another author....

This is simply great WAR PORN I read it over a 24 hour period and was genuinely bummed out when I read the last page and epilogue.

But the author has a Good thing going here , and just like the late W. E. B. Griffin , I a.m positive that a series is in the mix.

Fortunately the author never Went to BUDS but rather is a Marine’s Marine. He was an Infantry Officer and Skippered the Dark Horse of 3/5 in Combat. . He spent a Good part of his Career in LAV’s which have always impressed me and the hero of this book is a one legged Infantryman / LAV Guy.

Obviously the book is About the Russians invading the United States and in formulaic fashion , we have a ringside seat to a “ Red Dawn “ uprising.

The only compliant I have is that I finished the book .....I wish there was more :). Lets wait until next year and book Two of Twelve ....?

This was a great read and hard to put down. Rawling’s description of the war scenes leading to an attack by Russia were jarring. Rawilng’s assault by Fire demonstrates to me how inadequate and complacent the US would be if we were attacked on our own soil. Even today there are numerous individuals coming across our borders that most likely will bring terrorisms to the US.
