Red Blossom is Snow is here! The previous book in the series, The Hidden Moon, was one of my favorite reads of 2020, so I was super excited to get my hands on an early copy of the sequel. Plus I’m always here for more historicals set outside of Regency England!

Red Blossom in SnowIn Red Blossom in Snow, Magistrate Li Chen and courtesan Song Yi reconnect to solve a murder that happened near the House of Heavenly Peaches, the pleasure house where Song Yi is indentured. The two had been slowly forming an attachment that both knew could never grow into something more, before Li Chen withdrew and stopped courting Song Yi several months before the story opened. But now that her livelihood is in danger, Song Yi must put her feelings aside and work with Li Chen to untangle mysteries from their past and catch a killer.

I love what Jeannie Lin does with her Pingkang Li romances set in Tang Dynasty China so much! They’re such beautiful stories with lots of longing and forbidden romance, and then to pair them with a mystery that the couple has to solve? I can’t get enough!

While I think The Hidden Moon is still my favorite in the series, Red Blossom in Snow is such an excellent addition. It’s a slower paced story, but it’s just sooooooo romantic with sooooooo much yearning. It’s impossible not to get swept up in Song Yi and Li Chen’s romance and wonder how on earth they’re going to get their happily ever after when their positions are seemingly so far apart.

I don’t want to give too much away about the murder they’re trying to solve, but I love how Song Yi and Li Chen slowly come to realize how intertwined their pasts are, from when they first arrived in the capital and weren’t yet introduced to their childhoods back in Yuzhou. It just pairs perfectly to them realizing how much deeper their feelings are for each other than they initially realized.

I wish I had more to say about this book, but it’s one of those stories where I’m like, yes, I loved this and you need to read it, and that’s all I can coherently tell you! Just know that it’s a stunning romance and a beautiful addition to the series, though I think you can easily read this without having read the others. And that cover!! It’s gorgeous, and I can’t wait to put this on my keeper shelf!

I highly recommend picking up a copy of Red Blossom in Snow, though definitely be prepared to devour the rest of the series once you’re done!

I received an arc of Red Blossom in Snow from the author and purchased my own final copy of the ebook.

Set during the Tang Dynasty in Pingkang China,
when a man is found murdered outside the House of Heavenly Peaches, Magistrate Li Chen gets the opportunity to begin a relationship with Song Yi: a courtesan.

At Book 5 of a series, you usually know what to expect, and Jeanne Lin does deliver all the romance and intrigue of her Lotus Palace series. But the story has a melancholy element which works. Books 1-4 take place primarily in the Tang Dynasty capital city of Chang'an where everyone is either born there or just side-stepping a complicated past. But here the past events in a far away district are real and impact the characters in very surprising ways. The couple in Book 5 is a beautiful courtesan and a district magistrate (just like Book 2)...but with a very different dynamic. The hero, Li Chen, has actually been around as a side character since Book 1, first as ancient "police chief" then as a jilted lover in Book 4, but now he comes into his own as a thoughtful man haunted by a tragedy in the past back home. Song Yi comes from the same region and has her own past, which she is trying to forget. But fate and a murder changes things for the both of them. Lin does a great job of exploring the same character and themes from different angles, and I thought this one was especially lovely - a bittersweet beginning with a lovely ending which even Li Chen's mother sees as karmic destiny.

Li Chen is a magistrate who works hard to be fair and impartial. He knows that his desire for Song Yi, a courtesan at the House of Heavenly Peaches, is doomed but it doesn't keep from seeking out her company. When a murder happens at the House Li Chen finds himself torn between his duty and his love. He learns that the victim had come here seeking Song Yi, but Mother sent another girl in her place Now that courtesan is missing. Did she kill him? I saw how Song Yi protected her "sisters". I admired her caring. Will the truth ever be revealed? I enjoyed the pace of the story. Jeannie Lin drew me in to this romantic mystery. Her characters come alive with her vivid descriptions. Li Chen and Song Yi are fated to be together. Their story is beautifully written and includes characters from previous books. I liked seeing them in Red Blossom in Snow. They completed the picture. I always enjoy the stories of Jeannie Lin.

Red Blossom in Snow follows the love story of Magistrate Li Chen and courtesan Song Yi. We've met both of them in previous books in the series, but here we get to know them a little better. Li Chen may be the most by-the-book hero we've ever read, and we saw him a little differently. Meg loves a starchy, awkward hero, while Laine felt like he might be a little too devoted to propriety.

Lin's strength as a writer lies in her characterization. Each character is a fully-realized person, with their own motivations. Since we experience the world of the Pingkang Li through the characters' eyes, each book gives us a different perspective of the setting. Her use of recurring characters also serves to broaden our understanding of their world.

As always, we highly recommend this series!
