A contemporary guide to sex education that answers the most pressing questions teens and young adults have about dating, relationships, consent, and sexual safety.

There's a lot to talk about when it comes to sex education—anatomy, communication, safety, and more. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Jennifer Lang delivers a frank, compassionate, and evidence-based guide to healthy sexual relationships, focusing on the crucial role of consent in sex education.

A board-certified OB-GYN, Dr. Lang breaks down confusing concepts into factual and clear guidance. She outlines not only what consent looks and sounds like, but the importance of recognizing when a person has the capacity to give consent, and when they don't. Written for all teens, and inclusive of all sexual identities and orientations,
Consent is a reference guide to healthy sexual expression and relationships.

This book's approach to sex education covers:
  • An overview of human sexuality including what sex is and how it feels, separating sex education fact from fiction.
  • A discussion about relationships & dating and the various forms they take during adolescence, including some of the most common scenarios and healthy ways of handling them.
  • Tools for communicating and understanding consent, as well as critical information about the capacity to give consent, the language surrounding it, and what constitutes abuse and assault.

The way that teens think and talk about sex today has changed. Sex education needs to change, too. Teens and young adults will find the sex education information they need to make empowered choices about their bodies, their desires, and their boundaries in
Consent. You'll never think of sex education in the same way again.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Dr. Lang’s book should be required reading for teens, delivering important information about sex in a breezy, friendly, straightforward, and highly accessible way. A must-read for anyone wondering about how to navigate the world of consent in the #metoo era."—Amy Ziering, filmmaker and producer of The Invisible War and The Hunting Ground

"In
Consent, Dr. Jennifer Lang covers all the ins and outs of enthusiastic consent and makes the complicated world of sexual relationships quite simple. Along the way, she also makes sex normal and pleasurable, with a focus on conversation and responsibility, creating a space for everyone in the conversation. I love this sex-positive education not only for our teenagers but for every sexually active person!"—Lauren Brim, PhD., sexologist, and author of The New Rules of Sex

"This vital, accessible book sends the message that young women and men can both articulate boundaries they feel good about, rather than giving in to social pressure or traditional gender expectations. And, it makes clear that consent is key, regardless of each person’s gender or sexual orientation."
—Lara Stemple, Assistant Dean for Graduate Studies and International Student Programs, and Director of the Health and Human Rights Law Project, UCLA School of Law

Hi! I'm Jennifer Lang, a medical doctor specialized in OB/GYN and Gyn oncology. I'm also a mom of three kids ages 10, 8 and 7. I wrote my first book "The Whole 9 Months: A Week-by-Week Pregnancy Guide with Recipes for a Healthy Start," because I so strongly believe that food is the best medicine, and that if we practice healthy eating during pregnancy we can set our children up for a lifetime of health. I hope that pregnancy can be a time of increased mindfulness and deepening self-care for women and the families that surround and support them. We really do model everything for our little ones, and the path to healthy food choices begins in utero.

We do the best we can to create the conditions for our children to have good physical health, but as my own children grow I realize more and more that giving them the right information to develop a healthy relationship to their bodies (and the bodies of others they interact with in the world) is just as important. I wrote my new book "Consent: Every Teen's Guide to Healthy Sexuality," because I feel that teens are lacking a straightforward guide to Sex Ed that puts the single most important component of every sexual interaction --CONSENT-- into central focus. Making sure there is mutual, active, affirmative and enthusiastic consent is the single most important thing we can teach teens about sex as they begin their journey into self-discovery and young adulthood.

I hope you find what you are looking for in the books. Check them out, and let me know what you think!

I read this book with an eye to buying a few copies for young family members - that's definitely happening. Although the word "teen" is part of the subtitle, it's an excellent resource for readers of ANY age, and is not "too young" for college age people as well.Disclaimer: I'm personally acquainted with the author. It's very well organized and presented material, from what sex is, dating and relationships, CONSENT and communications, safer sex, through to sexual assault. Which is something young people need to know about, as most will experience it personally or will know someone who does.Does it promote sex before marriage? No. It promotes KNOWLEDGE before sexual activity - knowing oneself, being comfortable checking in with oneself, saying no to sex for whatever reason. HEARING No, whether it is loud, soft, or indirect, and understanding that the absence of No is not a Yes.My one beef about this wonderful book is that the font for most of the text is small. So if you have vision issues, you might need magnifying glasses, or do better with the e-book version. But DO get a copy, for the family bookshelf.

We're raising teenage sons and a young daughter. I grew up in a high control religion steeped in purity culture that caused a lot of trauma and resulting cptsd from an abusive first marriage.

In my own healing, I realized that I wanted a different message for my kids than the poor outcomes from a "save it for the wedding day" message.

I bought several books that ended up being a little too "loosely goosey" and liberal for our needs, but this book Consent is exactly what I was looking for. Basic information on a variety of topics without being overwhelming or T.M.I. The focus of this book was defining what emotional and physical boundaries might look like, what coercion and abuse looks like, and how to communicate. All stuff I wasn't taught, but thankfully is summed up in this perfect little book that will give our kids a solid, safe, smart start to their sex lives.

We don't want our kids to be abusive, nor be abused. Boundaries and communication are key for true Consent.

I was initially thrown by the use of the age range suggested for this book, until I noted that there is a difference between the reading age, which I assume refers to comprehension, and the suggested grade levels which is 10-12.
I write the social-emotional lessons for my school's grade 11 students. Knowing that our sex education program is limited to only 2 80 minute lectures that cover the most basic ideas about sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy, I wanted to create lessons that more directly related to students' creating healthy relationships with themselves and others. This book was a beautiful jumping off point for those lessons. I highly recommend it for parents and teens to read and have discussions about.

I skimmed through this book before giving it to my son, and it looked very interesting and very informative. Covers so many things besides just consent. My son even says it's very interesting and is enjoying it. Highly recommend if you want to educate your child on sex, consent and everything else in between! I think it's a lot more empowering for the reader as well as it talks about how he/she feels about having sex is important (if you're not ready, don't say yes if someone is pressuring you, etc.)
I want my son full of knowledge before the time comes! Not after. Sex education is so important. Just trying to make sure he has all the right tools. Highly recommend!

This is a good book on consent. I haven't read other books on the subject but this came highly recommended so I got it. I read it before handing it over to my 13 year old son. He read it, asked questions, and says he will reread it continually. So proud of him. I have seen him read it two other times so far and he says he will read it again before summer break so my 12 year old daughter can then read it. He keeps encouraging her to read it "because there's important info you should know," he says.

I’m so happy I purchased this book - not only for my daughter- but her friends as well. While my daughter & I maintain. a very close relationship & I feel we can speak about anything - I still think it is important for her to be able to read about what’s write & wrong regarding consent besides just hearing it from her parents. Just by her having the book in her room has prompted her friends to browse through it & initiated conversations amongst themselves.

This book was too descriptive for my 10 year old son. I bought it for him after he and his step brother were caught playing with each other’s bodies in hopes that it would focus on boundaries and consent. It did...but in a teenage way. My 10 year old doesn’t need to know about “bottoming” yet.

Quite basic of a book. Covers the most entry level understanding of consent. Good coverage on contraception options though.
