The Cove (An FBI Thriller Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 4,753 ratings

A picturesque town. A woman on the run. An undercover agent. The first riveting novel in Catherine Coulter's #1 New York Times bestselling FBI Thriller series.

Sally Brainerd can't remember what happened the night her father was murdered. Maybe she did it. Or maybe it was her poor, traumatized mother. Either way, the safest place for her is far away from Washington, D.C.. But while her aunt's home in The Cove should be a quiet refuge, Sally can't shake the feeling that there's something not quite right about the postcard perfect little town.

Despite his target's checkered past and convenient memory loss, FBI Special Agent James Quinlan isn't convinced she's the killer—but maybe she knows who is. As he uses his cover to get close to Sally and unearth the memories her mind has hidden away, James can't deny his connection to the troubled woman. But as their lies and passions intertwine, Sally and James soon learn they aren't the only ones keeping deadly secrets in The Cove...

Amazon.com Review

Catherine Coulter has written a truly suspenseful romance in this story of Sally Brainerd, hiding in a small town from the enemies who killed her father, and FBI agent James Quinlan, who believes she's the key to the murder he's trying to solve. Sally thinks she'll be safe in The Cove--but will she?

From Publishers Weekly

"So perfect, like a Hollywood set," FBI agent James Quinlan thinks as he enters The Cove, a seemingly tranquil, picture-postcard town situated on the Oregon coast. Quinlan has been on Sally Brainerd's trail since her arms-dealing father, Amory St. John, was murdered. Sally is the key witness, and it's Quinlan's job to bring her in. Quinlan, whose cover is working as a PI hired to find an old couple who had mysteriously disappeared three years earlier, quickly learns that when he starts asking questions, bad things start happening. Coulter (The Nightingale Legacy), whose contemporary suspense novels are, unfortunately, few and far between, delivers a fast-paced, solidly structured read despite the occasionally cartoonish characters.

This was a great book. Was definitely a thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Catherine Coulter has done it again. She's my kind of author and writer who I'll continue to follow.

First book of series, but each book seems to focus on different FBI agents & their romantic or working partner. This book is mystery thriller light. Some romance but not much. No big character depth or snappy dialogue. Was told to read this series but doesnt even come close to the death series by JD Robb. (Ok so Im addicted to Lt Eve Dallas & her sexy husband Rourke....)

Even if some parts of this book had fast action other areas kept me bogged down, so much so I had to skip pages. Plot was interesting & your kept guessing. But too much detail repeating certain parts of some scenes. Needed editing. Book was just too long & too many parts drawn out to fully keep my interest. I wanted to find out what would occur next. & there were surprises in plot. Yet other parts were too slow & uninteresting.

Sally escapes from mental institution, run by a horrid Dr who allows Sally's father in to beat her while she's constantly drugged. When she manages to escape she goes to an eccentric Aunt in a very small town. Earlier Sally's wimpy Mother & her nasty husband made her believe she was crazy. Around the same time Sally hits the Cove town so does FBI agent James Quinlin. He's trying to get to Sally because she's a witness about her father who was shot.
The town has a famous tasting ice cream is full of elderly characters. Quinlin has to chase Sally all over. Soon he realizes something is wrong both with Sally's family & the townspeople. many twists & turns to figure out. I can only give 3 stars because of the inconsistency. Will try other books & do hope they are better. Not a bad book & it will keep you busy.

The plot line was excellent and original! Never really knew until nearly the end of the book what the heck was going on and who was killing people. I can’t say much more or it would spoil it for other readers. Pretty tame as far as language, graphic violence and sex goes. However, just enough to keep the juices flowing for a book I could not put down until it was read.

I enjoyed this book but the writing bothered me, the characters talked like they were young, it was a bit redundant. Was Sally crazy? Why did no one seem to believe her? James was undercover, but fell for her. I didn’t really feel much connection between them. There was a happy ever after.

This book kept me hooked from page to page. Sally was a wealthy young lady whose father abused her mother. It seems she was placed in a private mental institute by her new husband and her father. When her father was murdered Sally escapes and runs to her aunt in this quaint little town called the Cove. When undercover FBI agent Quinlan arrives looking for Sally he meets her but things take a turn for the strange. His cover is a private investigator looking for a missing elderly couple in a town filled with elderly people. As he ask questions he realize everybody is lying about not having seen the couple.

My husband has already finished this book. Catherine Coulter's first of her FBI thrillers was a good start to her series.
