After much research I decided the Alesis Surge Mesh kit was the best for her. It had all the features she needed, some expandability, and the reviews were all good!
After she opened it, set up was relatively simple. Follow the instructions which are all in pictures. After all guys don't read the words in instructions anyways. Sat the wife behind the kit, and adjusted it to fit her. And away she went. This kit is absolutely worth every penny. The drum kit sounds extremely well. Could not be happier with it's performance!
Some side notes though! So yes this kit comes with every thing you need for it, and it alone! If this is your very first drum kit you will need a throne, amplifier, and drum sticks. The kit does come with some wood tipped sticks, but in the reviews these are not the best thing for a mesh kit.
My add ons to this kit!
-Zildjan nylon tipped anti-vibe drums sticks. Made for electric drums, and feel awesome!
-Simons DA50 Amplifier, this is a must if you want to hear your drums! Great little amp! This amp with the Surge Kit is a solid combo!
-Alesis Electronic Drum Head Set. These headphones are designed for electric drums and sound amazing. Remember that part about us living in an apartment? My wife can play as loud as she wants and all you hear is the tap of the stick to the pads! These headphones are a MUST (especially for parents with young trainees :p)
-Gibraltar throne... you got a nice drum kit.... sit on something that wont make your sore or tired! Gibraltar makes the best drum thrones.
-Vic Firth drum stick caddy, seriously this is a nice addition to ANY drum kit.
-Lastly get a quality 1/4" cable to go between the control and the amp.... DO NOT CHEAP OUT! you will regret it!
All these items are available here on Amazon, or your favorite Guitar (ahem) place. :D Happy drumming!
- excellent quality chrome stand. fixtures are top notch. easy to adjust
- mesh heads are really nice. High quality. Drum sticks reflect off the surface like a real drum
- I use a real drum set during lessons. The feel and response is very similar
- Normal drum sets are loud. This is reasonable ... but the sounds, even on the mesh heads, are a bit louder than I expected
- Love the ability to mix in music and to play along
- can change the sound of any of the drums and cymbals. I ended up using the default
Cons
- instructions for setup weren't entirely obvious. But not too bad
- even the online video wasn't clear. For example, several of the pieces are bowed. Should they bow in or out? Also, I realized after the fact that the support fixtures work better one way than the other
- the electronic control box is complicated. Even after having read the instructions 3 times, it was not obvious to me how to record and replay sessions. For example, there is no glossary. The use terms like "kit" and "voice". After some playing, realized that "kit" refers to the entire drum set, and that "voice" refers to the sounds generated by any one drum or cymbal. That said, I find I use the control module is a pretty basic manner: w/ music or using the metronome.
Still, I love this set, and am incredibly happy w/ my purchase and selection. If like me, you are returning to drumming after a several decade hiatus, and don't want to annoy your other household guests, this is the set for you.

Other than that problem, everything has been great with the kit itself. It is very solid while being hit, and the setup was very easy and allows for a lot of adjustments to make it how you like it. I dont use the sounds on the kit, They are ok and would be fine for most beginners but I prefer the sounds of something like BFD or ezdrummer for sure.
Update: The software issues have now been fixed with the latest updates. Everything works perfectly by just choosing the correct drum kit preset in BFD player.
Top reviews from other countries
Reviewed in Canada on December 27, 2023
Some things to consider: 1) the sound presets that came with the kit are ok, but you can edit them somewhat to expand their range. Running the kit through software like Logic or GarageBand lets you take things further. 2) The snare is a good size, but the toms & cymbals are a bit smaller than I’d like. However, I’m adjusting to that fairly quickly. 3) The choke feature on the crash is great, although it’s a little hard for a beginner like me to find the necessary sweet spot every time. 4) The pedals are really good, very sturdy, but the spikes that provide traction will GOUGE a wooden floor. Not the fault of the kit, but worth knowing in advance. You’d do well to sit the kit or even just the pedals on a carpet or thick towel.
Best thing about this excellent kit is that you can pound away as loudly (&, in my case, as badly) as you like without disturbing others, within reason. That’s perfect for shy beginners, who want the sound of quality drums but not the embarrassment of a loud kit broadcasting your mistakes.
In short, I’m so very satisfied with this kit. A fair price for a well made instrument that you can expand with an extra tom and/or cymbal. Highly recommended!
