I’ve read a ton of books that have traces of Cinderella, but never one that includes action scenes, political intrigue, and the incredible spy component like Mission Impossible. There’s the stepmother and the god-awful stepchildren that torment Eleanora and her brother, Ben. And then there’s the wonderfully stubborn grandmother that comes to their rescue, to take them out of servitude and give their lives more meaning and to give the two siblings what they have always wanted: freedom. But as some know, freedom comes at a cost. Always.
It comes at a cost that Eleanora is willing to pay.
Eleanora is a strong and courageous character and refuses to let anything, and anyone, break her. She controls her own destiny and refuses to let anyone tell her otherwise. Family is important to her, and putting up with her stepfamily is what she does to ensure her and Ben have a future. She’s a lovable main character and one that deserves a happily every after.
Though I loved Eleanora and her bravery and her desire to do what’s right, I loved Ferdy more. Ferdy is such a lovable and fun character and, of course, he sounds so attractive on the page. I was more excited about the scenes with Ferdy than I was for any other scenes (I’m hoping there’s a ton more of Ferdy in book two). He showcases charm and his dazzling intellect, all the while trying to sweep Eleanora off her feet. Ferdy brings a giddiness to the book that I feel would be missing if he didn’t exist. All in all, Eleanora is one lucky girl to have a character like Ferdy vying for her attention. I also very much enjoyed Lady POW in all her stubborn and sassy glory. There were so many enjoyable characters in Kingdom of Ash and Soot that once I finished the first book, it felt like I was leaving family.
When I read the last line of the book, I was like, “That’s it?!” I craved more of Eleanora’s story (and Ferdy, of course), and I cannot wait to read the second book. Eleanora’s journey is no where near its end; her journey has just begun, and I’m determined to watch her finish it.
If you love the spy element, romantic intrigue, fierce action scenes, swoon-worthy love interests, and character-driven plots, then I highly recommend Kingdom of Ash and Soot.
Eleanora is strong and opinionated and curious which makes for a fun MC. I like her relationship with her brother Ben. And Ferdy is the perfect fun loving guy she needs in her life. I actually don't know much history about Prague but this was fun to learn about the politics and religious happenings within the story.
It was thoroughly entertaining! The characters while defined did seem a little vague and the dialogue was a little choppy in places. I couldn't figure out who the bad guy is! The mystery and action were great! I can't wait to finish the series though! I'm completely hooked!!

This book follows Eleanora, or Nora or Ella, and her brother Benedict whose father dies and they are left with their stepmother and step-siblings. After their father dies, they are treated like servants(think like Cinderella) and not as part of the family any longer. Nora is determined to get her and her brother out of the situation, until their grandmother suddenly arrives 15 years after their mother had died. Their grandmother, Lady Penelope, takes over and reinstates the positions of her grandchildren. As she stays there, Nora and her brother know there is something more to their grandmother. Turns out she's part of what is called The Order of the Crystal Daggers. She's basically an undercover agent for the Queen and was sent to Prague to find out more about the local and recent murders that have been occurring. She enlists her grandchildren to join and help them in the mystery. Which they gladly do. And as they investigate, they realize there is a lot more to the murders that are occurring that may even involve an heir to the throne no one knows about.
I really liked the history that is intertwined into this book. It takes place in Prague during the 1800s and there is a lot of political intrigue involved in this book as well along with the adventure and mystery.
I love the idea behind the Order of the Crystal Daggers. There's definitely a lot of suspense and mystery and action that happens in the book and keeps you on your toes. You're just wondering the whole time who is telling the truth, or the actual identity of different people. I figured one person pretty quickly, and I'm a bit disappointed in Nora and her observation skills to say the least.
One of my favorite aspects of this book is the sibling duo Nora and Benedict. I don't read enough books with a brother and sister duo who get along and are very close and support each other no matter what. Their relationship is exactly what you would expect with siblings, but they also support each other and obviously love each other so much. They literally are all they had after their father died and you can feel it as you read the book.
Benedict is one of my favorites. I like his name lol, but he also has redeeming qualities in him. He's crippled from trying to save a cat when he was younger for his sister. Instead of feeling resentment towards her, it's more like he is disappointed in himself and has no confidence in himself and is angry all the time. I look forward to reading more about him because I think he's a great character and could be so much more, especially within the Order.
Now Nora, I like her, but for someone who seems to claim to be observant is really not, and instead of allowing logic to direct her actions and decisions, she seems to act more on her heart and emotions. I'm sure she will grow and learn from that as I read this series, but I was a bit disappointed in her. I do enjoy how blunt and forward she is though, I mean she and her brother have had a rough life, so you really cannot blame her for being a bit rude at times. Her focus has always been her brother, though, and I love that about her.
I also liked the side characters. Lady Penelope is fantastic and I love the banter she has with Nora, it's quite hilarious! Karl is a bit uptight, but you can see some warmth in him hidden in there, but I do wonder what his endgame is, I still have not figured him out. Ferdy is a fun and sassy character! I can hardly wait to read the next book because I really want get some answers about him!
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and give it 4.5 stars just because I feel a bit disappointed with the main character Nora, but the story, the mystery(which is really great!), the twists, the suspense, and the adorable romance is really good and I definitely recommend it!

While selling some of her fathers possessions she meets Ferdy. Then the grandmother - Lady Penelope- who they have never met arrives, she takes over the house and gets them away from their stepmother. Through her they find out about their mother and The Order of the Crystal Daggers. Nora and Ben decided to join The Order which gives them more freedom but people are being killed and it’s The Order’s job to find out what is going on.
This is the first book of the series and I have enjoyed reading it. I found it easy to read and I was completely engrossed in it. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
