Where its limitations really show up is when you want to use it for pre-trip planning where you want to get into the details of seeing the reality of what you may find of interest on the topo map. Think up in the rockies, or the Cascades where you are planning to be on foot. Its limitations are pretty impactful.
This product has no Google Earth type controls to allow you to pan, pivot and really zoom in. The imagery is FLAT with no way to tilt it to get a look at what the terrain really looks like. For me this is a deal killer, not only that, the imagery is not crisp and has a limited zoom in. Google earth is light years ahead in what you can figure out about the characteristics of the terrain you are going into.
Although the topo maps really look nice, after you get into it a little bit you realize they have been scrubbed of all annotations, no buildings or historical location references, really nothing except a few creek/river names and major mountains although by using some of the available layers you can get trail information and a few minor government bldgs like SOME lookout towers and rec. sites. What this does to me in my use is completely disorient me. Start zooming around and moving the map and suddenly its almost impossible to tell where you are. If I am looking to hunt around an old lookout tower, or historic mining area, they are not on the maps at all. Pick up a USGS map and look at the information on it, look at the OnX topos and its like looking at a desert.
Those are my two biggest gripes. No imagery controls and non-existent topo detail,,,Other than that, if you are hunting in and around a bunch of mixed ownership areas, close to your road system, its reasonably use-able, but if you are into digging into topos to find new terrain features and then looking at the ground images in detail forget it. My opinion is this is pretty much for non-serious hunters who just need a general idea of where they are headed so they don't end up shooting someones goat.
I will say that I have had lots of dialog with the company representatives and they have been responsive, polite and helpful but that isn't helping them make the product better.
So, I am using Garmin BaseCamp now with a chip for topo of the states I hunt in because it has a direct link to Google Earth and all the fantastic options that brings with it from being able to see historical image data from clear back in 1994 so I can find old clear cuts and see what the ground looks like underneath all that timber, to being able to zoom and tilt to see just how steep the ground really looks and if there are any cliffs or other dangers to watch out for.
Like to many companies in the technology age they seem to have lost their focus from what they started out to do and aren't putting the effort into hunting tools, but there are lots of new features for you to be able to post to the web and other non useful features that hunters would not use because they don't share good hunting spots with anyone....... I hope that OnX focuses on getting their user tools together and drops all the frills they are building into the product to satisfy the tweeters and facebook legions and get back into the business of providing hunting tools for hunters......
