Named a Most Anticipated Book of 2022 by Katie Couric Media, the CBC, the Globe and Mail, BookBub, POPSUGAR, SheReads, Women.com and more!*

Natalie Jenner, the internationally bestselling author of
The Jane Austen Society, returns with a compelling and heartwarming story of post-war London, a century-old bookstore, and three women determined to find their way in a fast-changing world in Bloomsbury Girls.

Bloomsbury Books is an old-fashioned new and rare book store that has persisted and resisted change for a hundred years, run by men and guided by the general manager's unbreakable fifty-one rules. But in 1950, the world is changing, especially the world of books and publishing, and at Bloomsbury Books, the girls in the shop have plans:

Vivien Lowry: Single since her aristocratic fiance was killed in action during World War II, the brilliant and stylish Vivien has a long list of grievances--most of them well justified and the biggest of which is Alec McDonough, the Head of Fiction.

Grace Perkins: Married with two sons, she's been working to support the family following her husband's breakdown in the aftermath of the war. Torn between duty to her family and dreams of her own.

Evie Stone: In the first class of female students from Cambridge permitted to earn a degree, Evie was denied an academic position in favor of her less accomplished male rival. Now she's working at Bloomsbury Books while she plans to remake her own future.

As they interact with various literary figures of the time--Daphne Du Maurier, Ellen Doubleday, Sonia Blair (widow of George Orwell), Samuel Beckett, Peggy Guggenheim, and others--these three women with their complex web of relationships, goals and dreams are all working to plot out a future that is richer and more rewarding than anything society will allow.

This highly successful follow-up to the wonderful THE JANE AUSTEN SOCIETY intertwines real-life characters with a fictitious core cast of characters for some sparkling results. The author is expert in using her literary background to inspire confidence in her readers that they are all on solid ground in this re-creation of a post-war literary London. Some female characters to be reckoned with!!

I struggled to get into this book. It is a slow but quality bit of writing. I can see it's popularity, but 3 other books in my TBR pile made me quit at about 100 pages.

Reviewers said that it was not necessary to read the first book in the series, The Jane Austen Society, that this novel would stand alone. I found that even though I HAD read the first book, I couldn't remember everything and there were enough references to previous events and characters that I should have reread the Jane Austen Society first. I gave that book three stars (good, not great).

Readers also said they preferred this book to the first one, and I agree. I did like this one better. The inclusion of so many famous names, however, threw me off a bit as I felt I had to research each one to find out who they were. And they didn't seem to add much to the story except as a reminder of the literary circles in which these women were traveling.

My favorite was Vivian and since she is the main character in the third book in this series I'm sure I will read that one as well.

Pour a cup of tea and settle in for a slow and easy armchair journey back to post-war London where books became an essential part in rebuilding lives and three inspiring women give a charming bookstore a much-needed woman's touch!

Quaint looking Bloomsbury Books has managed to resist change for decades. It’s run by narrow-minded men and their set of 51 rules. When the manager is off due to an illness, the women who’ve not only had enough of unfair treatment but who are also overqualified and underpaid, take matters into their own hands.

Evie Stone, from The Jane Austen Society, is one of the first females to graduate with a degree from Cambridge and has just recently been overlooked for a university position in favour of a less qualified male.

Vivien Lowry, whose fiance has been killed in action, works harder than any other employee yet can’t earn a better position because of societal constraints.

Grace Perkins, has had to put her life on hold after her husband comes home from war-damaged. She’s struggling to hold down a job to support their meagre existence and doesn’t get paid what she deserves.

You’ll read about these women, stifled under the rules and the male-dominated workplace, who go about taking back control, not only for themselves but also for female authors who’ve been denied publicity. I chuckled as they went about rearranging the bookstore, and befriending and promoting famous female authors such as Peggy Guggenheim, Sonia Blair, Daphne Du Maurier, and Ellen Doubleday. I cheered them on as they steadfastly and with purpose, took back control and demanded to be treated as equals.

I was gifted this advance copy by Natalie Jenner, St. Martin’s Press, and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book That Is Both Intelligently Written and a Feel-Good Read

I have encountered books in my long reading life that I could not put down once I started them. I began Bloomsbury Girls at breakfast time and, in between other chores, finished it just after midnight. Natalie Jenner’s second novel is so compellingly written that it carried me along to the happy conclusion. Jenner’s first novel, The Jane Austen Society, is a highly fictionalized account of the founding of the original literary society devoted to Austen; this first book is full of what dramaturgists and screenwriters call “Easter Eggs,” in this case, sly references to the plots and characters of Austen’s six novels. Bloomsbury Girls continues the story of Evie Stone, a character who in her role as a female servant at Chawton Manor, catalogued the extensive library there. Austen herself was familiar with the books that were there during her lifetime because Chawton was one of two great estates owned by her older brother Edward Austen Knight. Upon the death of the bailiff of Chawton Manor, Edward bestowed Chawton cottage on his impoverished, widowed mother, his two sisters, and their best friend Martha Lloyd. It was at Chawton Cottage that Austen lived from July, 1809 to her death in July, 1817; it was there that Austen revised her first three manuscript novels and wrote three more novels. The Jane Austen Society (both in Jenner’s first novel and in real life) was formed to purchase, renovate, and open that cottage to the public as the Jane Austen House Museum. Evie Stone’s meticulous cataloging of the books at Chawton Manor allowed the novel’s members to buy the library which they then resold at a substantial profit, the monies from which went to purchase the cottage and fund its renovation. Jenner’s second novel follows Evie Stone’s early life. from her graduation with top honors from Cambridge, her failure to get a research fellow’s position due to male chauvinism among the faculty and students, and her landing at Bloomsbury Books in London as a shop girl, making seven pounds per week in 1950. Evie is fascinated with the writing of late eighteenth-century and early nineteenth-century women writers; her fascination is the biggest “Easter Egg” in the novel because Chawton Manor which was sold by the Knight family to a developer who wanted to turn it into a golf course; when that scheme fell through, an American fan of Austen, Sandy Lerner, bought a 99-year lease, extensively renovated the building, and established the Centre for the Study of Early English Women's Writing (CSEEWW). Because of the setting of Jenner’s second novel (Bloomsbury section of London), there are many “Easter Eggs” relating to authors, especially women authors. While perhaps only English majors will recognize the many sly references, the casual readers will nonetheless find in Evie Stone’s story her successful efforts to pull herself up by her own bootstraps—a theme much beloved by Americans who may not have read Horatio Alger’s stories themselves but who have imbibed from the American culture a love of such a story line. Bloomsbury Girls is a well-written, intelligent, heart-warming story of success in overcoming tremendous odds. I heartily recommend it to any sensitive reader.

I apparently purchased a used book when I thought I was purchasing a new one. There is a slight tear and discoloration on part of the book jacket. Beware when you are purchasing this book. I wouldn't mind if it wasn't a gift for a dear friend and I can't count on getting another delivered in a week.

Perfect reading for Women's History Month and International Women's Day, Bloomsbury Girls celebrates women helping women not only find themselves, but thrive and succeed amidst the post-war patriarchal society. I loved the wit, humor, sarcasm, banter, romance, resourcefulness, and resiliency found within the pages. Having had the rare opportunity to listen to the audiobook while reading the novel, Juliet Stevenson brings the book to life, immersing the reader in the everyday life of each character as s/he goes about his/her bookstore life, while seamlessly and deftly switching between the dialects. I cannot wait to read her next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-Written, Well-Populated, Well Worth Reading
Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2023

Bottomline: This is a charming and interesting story. The setting in a long-established bookstore in London and the early 1950’s postwar time frame add interest, but it is the characters that will make you want to sit and read. The main characters all work in the bookstore. The focus is on three women, Grace, Vivien, and Evie. Each of them has different talents and each of them has different reasons for working in at Bloomsbury Bookstore, but they share the same status and limitations as women. The women are surrounded by well-defined supporting characters. The supporting characters include the men associated with the bookstore and women who are customers, allies, and sometimes celebrities. It is fun to have writers Daphne DuMaurier and Samuel Beckett show up in the narrative at key times. The book is a very pleasant read. There are tensions and complications, but the overall tone of the book is not stressful. The writing is good, and the pacing is steady. Because the narrative is always moving forward, the pages turn quickly. I purchased this book on a Kindle deal so the ratio of price to entertainment value was very good. It is a book that would be worth even the regular the full purchase price.
