Purchase options and add-ons
Making fairy gardens, and teaching crafters how to do the same, keeps Carmel-by-the-Sea shop owner Courtney Kelly busy—but sometimes she has to make time for a wee bit of detective work . . .
With a theater foundation tea and an art show planned at Violet Vickers’s estate, Courtney is hired to create charming fairy gardens for the event. It’s not so charming, however, when her best friend Meaghan’s ex-boyfriend turns out to be Violet’s latest artistic protégé. Even worse, not long after Meaghan locks horns with him, his body is found in her yard, bludgeoned with an objet d’murder.
There’s a gallery of suspects, from an unstable former flame to an arts and crafts teacher with a sketchy past. But when the cops focus on Meaghan’s business partner, who’s like a protective older brother to her, and discover he also has a secret financial motive, Courtney decides to draw her own conclusions. Fearing they’re missing the forest for the trees, and with some help from Fiona the sleuthing fairy, she hopes to make them see the light . . .

This is book 4. I started the series with book 3 which I reviewed and wrote that it could be read as a standalone. I recommend having read at least one other book in the series before reading book 4, Flicker of a Doubt. The author does explain references of past events and people, but I do think with this particular book, it would be helpful to have read an earlier book in the series.
The story centers around the artists in Courtney's town of Carmel-by-the-sea. An old flame of her friend Meghan returns to Carmel for a fundraising event and to demand Meghan get back with him. Yep. Not really wooing or romancing. His hostile personality and his past, is brought to the forefront of this story. A very interesting mystery revolves around Meghan's business partner discovering a dead body in her yard. I really enjoyed the story and getting to know more about our reoccurring characters and the links they may share to new characters in this book. I won't say this was an easy solve of who done it. But if you do think you have it figured out before the last few chapters, keep going. So much more comes out about the case and those involved that you don't want to miss. I don't want to give anything away, but I was half expecting for a phone number at the end of the book to call if you are a victim of domestic abuse. It would not have been out of place. 2 thumbs up and 4 stars for another Fairy fantastic tail by Daryl Wood Gerber. Thank you #netgalley and #Kensington for the eARC of A Flicker of a Doubt.
When Violet hires Courtney to build fairy gardens for her upcoming tea and art show, they never expected murder to be the main attraction. When one of the artists is found murdered in Meagan’s backyard and the police zero in on her business partner, Courtney sets out o prove that the victim was killed by someone else. But suspects are hard to nail down, as the victim had several people in his life that might have been happy to bash his head in. The evidence leads Courtney down a garden path of misdirection and lands her in the killer's sight.
The “Fairy Garden Mystery” series is a fan favorite with readers who enjoy paranormal-style books., and those who aren’t into the genre. In this case, Courtney is put into a spot that has her working harder than ever. Dealing with a killer is one thing, but dealing with her father, who doesn’t believe in her fairy, almost sends her over the edge. There are plenty of twists and turns throughout this story and enough mystery to keep readers guessing until the end. Of course, Fiona progresses with her fairy training, and Courtney continues to create her gardens, but there is something in this book that has the feel of a change coming to the characters and the series, and although change can be hard, sometimes, it also gives us more enjoyment than we thought possible.
