Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Ahoy there, me hearties! This is a fun new take on “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly.” The colorful and zany cartoon art does a phenomenal job of capturing the absurdity and hilarity of this outrageous spin-off. A harum-scarum old pirate encounters misfortune at sea as he ingests one unpalatable item after another. From a whole fish to a chest of gold to a large ship, these unappetizing items lead to the untimely demise of this sea-worn picaroon. The text is engaging and melodic. Boys and girls alike will love to sing each comical new verse. Anticipation builds as each item introduced grows larger and larger and children eagerly await the dramatic ending. The digitally created illustrations are boldly colorful and delightful. Children will linger on each page, not wanting to miss any details. Although many collections contain numerous versions of this tale, this one is modern and highly appealing. The cumulative and repetitive nature of the story is great for actively involving the youngest readers/listeners.–School Library Journal

I came across this illustrator after purchasing "Wild Zoo Train" in a general store in CT. The illustrations are zany and smart, so I looked into other books he has worked on and came across this series and am so glad I did. They are wonderful! Ward's writing and Gray's illustrations are superb; the writing is witty and smart, perfectly in line with each other. It's a wonderful combination and I have picked up all of the books in this series and am hoping for me (I even bought other Grey and other Ward books because of how impressed I am). My kids adore this book and watching the 'consequences' of each additional 'consumption'. So well done! It is worth the cost of the hardcover; quality of book/paper is top notch as well. Enjoy!

Great book for your little pirate lover. Even better if your husband has a killer pirate impersonation and reads to your son in that voice!!!
Our family loves these “there was a .......who swallowed a......” formatted books. Kids love the repetition and outlandish things the characters swallow. This book doesn’t disappoint. I live these books for promoting reading. The repetition is really helpful for a budding reader! It’s also funny and most importantly engaging which is key when trying to nurture a love for reading.

I bought this book for my two kids, 3 and 5 years old. It's now their absolute favorite. The book starts with a rhyme and then builds on it; I read it in a sing-song voice and the kids finish the rhyme with the last two lines that remain the same through the book - THEY LOVE IT!! (So with every couple of pages, the story gets repeated with another line added and my kids finish with "YO, HO HO! (and the rest of the rhyme)". My husband and I love it, too - it ends up being such a fun thing we do together. The artwork is amazing, although as another reader said, it's probably too gorgeous for young kids to admire. But my husband and I love it and the kids will appreciate it in time. I'm about to order other books by this author.

Not as good as the old lady who swallowed a spider or the cayote who swallowed a bunch of stuff but it's still a fun book. It seems a little random but maybe it's just my preference since none of these books really make much sense, haha. The kids like it and there are several opportunites to learn about some new things you wouldn't necessarily see in every day life.

This is a huge hit!! Now I can't wait to see what my grandson will think tomorrow. The art work is so fun....the story adorable. Truly I would give it 10 stars if you could. People at my work loved it to when it arrived ther. Two grandmothers plan to order for their grandchildren because they liked it so much.

I love this story. It’s a treat to read it to my little one. The illustrations are very well done and there is a delightful cadence to the words.

I purchased There Was an Old Pirate Who Swallowed a Fish for my 4 year old grandson, we have so many of "Swallowed" stories I was sure this one would be just as funny, even if different and judging by the cover the illustrations would be grand. So, I was half right, the illustrations are bright and colorful. The story on the other hand left a lot to be desired. I didn't have any trouble finding a sing-song rhythm and the kids enjoyed that. The laughs these books usually get seemed to be more forced than spontaneous, but they did follow along. As we read it seemed the pirate was building a ship for himself; a map, some gold, a chest, a plank, a sail, a mast, but then he swallowed a ship (not sure where the fish or bird fit in there). Usually the last item swallowed brings a funny, explosive sort of ending, but not this time. The pirate swallowed the ship and proceeded to sink to the bottom of the deep...dark...sea, taking everything he swallowed with him. Not the ending we expected. My grandson and 7 yr old granddaughter seemed confused by it, it was certainly a let down from all the other books we have enjoyed.

I'm not thrilled with this purchase and can't really recommend the book. I will probably return this book. Two stars for the great illustrations.

Edit 5/9/17 - I got part of this review very wrong, while I still don't like the book my grandson has decided it is hysterical. He has asked me to read it to him everyday and he had it memorized by the third or forth reading. Every time we read the book he commented on different scenes played out in the pictures, the guy who lost his gold to the plundering pirate and the sharks waiting for the pirate to fall from the mast were two favorites. After he asked me to read it to him for the second time I asked if he wanted me to return it and he could pick out another book. No way! He wanted to keep this book. Any book that is so loved deserves more than two stars, so I'll give it one more but I can't go any higher for a book with such a weak ending.

This is a twist on There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly. This silly pirate swallows all sorts of piratey things. The repetitive text is great for kids to join in and help "read" the book. My 3 year old loves this book. Also, the pirate does not die in the end (like some versions of The Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly). Read the book to find out the surprise ending :)

I read this to my nursery class a group of lively 3&4 year old's. They loved it. It was easy to read and had enough repetition and flow to keep them engaged untill
the end. Would definitely recommend.
