When small-time conman, Cal Carver, is thrown in jail and forced to share a cell with a semi-naked cannibalistic serial killer, he's pretty sure his day can't get any worse.
Boy, is he wrong.
It isn't until two-thirds of the human race is wiped out and Cal is mistakenly abducted by aliens that things really start to go downhill.
Whisked across the galaxy, Cal is forced into a team of some of the sector's most notorious villains and scumbags and tasked with delivering a package to a warlord-run solar system where the authorities daren't venture.
The mission should be simple enough, but as one screw-up leads to another the ragtag group of unwitting heroes find themselves in a frantic battle to save an entire alien civilization - and its god - from total annihilation.
Featuring epic space battles, hilariously snarky characters, and a shapeshifting blob with the face of Tobey Maguire, Space Team is the first book in the internationally bestselling series by award-winning author, Barry J. Hutchison.
Perfect for fans of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Galaxy Quest, Guardians of the Galaxy, and pretty much anything else with the word 'Galaxy' in the title.*

The main character is Cal Carver and I really enjoy his combination of silliness, caring, stupidity, bravery and adventure. Honestly, you never can predict what he’s going to do in any situation (except, that is, possibly the worst thing you can think of... he’s usually on board with that.) the supporting characters include his alien shipmates and the best friends and worst villains he meets in his travels through space and time.
Definitely read this series. It’s seriously one of the best series out there!
Space Team chronicles the accidental adventures of Cal Carver, a fortysomething low level con man from Philadelphia. After being mistaken for his cell mate, a notorious cannibal, he is kidnapped and thrust into the greater universe.
Aliens are real and diverse. They just think the Earth is too primitive to bother with, like an Imperial era territory.
Cal gets roped into a nefarious plot and bumbles his way through trying to survive . . .Space Stuff. His happy-go-lucky philosophy lands him on a team with an attractive blue pilot/minder, a sulky-teenager werewolf-like alien, a cyborg who is definitely not a robot, and an adorable, yet impossible, ball of shapeshifting green goo.
Cal is ready to survive the Universe. Can the Universe survive Cal Carver?
While the writing seems sometimes simplistic and some sticking points seem to be simply waved away, a lot of those details are well thought out and come back to play roles later in the series. Seemingly throwaway lines or details might come back later as major plot devices. As Hannibal says on the A-team - I love it when a plan comes together.
Highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys The classic humorous stories such as The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, The Stainless Steel Rat, Robert Asprin’s M.Y.T.H series and others I grew up reading.
If you like to laugh and you like Sci-fi buy them all then take a week off work. You will not regret it
