Blu-Ray Review: Kam And Ronson version. This is an excellent and by far the best version you will ever find with this movie. The picture quality is great. Some may say it isn't and unless they have like 80/20 vision, they are stupid as hell. The audio is okay but still need improvement. Also this Blu-Ray comes with an interview that is not subtitled and trailers. The subs are coherent with very little grammar errors if not at all.

Movie Review: City On Fire is an excellent cops and robbers movie filled with bloody violence with a really well told story of friendship and betrayal. Gee! Where have I heard that before? SHEEESH! Though this kind of storytelling is very common in China (if not the world), this one executes very well with complexity, dramatization, great direction from Ringo Starr.... uh I mean LAM, and the bloody action was happy fun. It has it's moments of comedy but it's not irritating like most Chinese movies. Uh, stop it. You f*****s are not funny.

Conclusion: 4 1/2 stars for the Blu Ray and 5 stars for City On Fire.

A very good film is spoiled by a bad English dub. I expected Chinese dialog with English subtitles, but this disc offers only the dub. It ruins the mood.

Decent movie, not on the level of John Woo though. I read that Quentin Tarantino was criticized for copying the story from City on Fire for Reservoir Dogs. Having now seen both movies, I can't believe that anyone would even think of drawing a connection between the two. It's like how George Lucas got the idea for Star Wars from Hidden Fortress. Yes, the inspiration is there, and if you squint real hard, you can see similarities, but since film has been inspiring film since the beginning of film, we can safely say that City on Fire is a fairly typical Hong Kong noir and Reservoir Dogs is quintessentially Tarantino i.e., highly influenced by Chinese film and very unique storytelling. Thank God Tarantino made Reservoir Dogs because he vindicated this very tired plot. City on Fire is for fans of the HK noir set, and even then, it's middle of the pack.

Do not purchase through the seller “insomniacsonline” What I got was an unwatchable bootleg in a broken case with an inkjet printed paper cover.

I would have preferred to have seen this film in it's original Mandarin language track but I do not feel it is necessary to knock this edition. I also take the unfashionable opinion that "Reservoir Dogs", Quentin Tarantino's homage(not rip-off) to "City on Fire", is the better of the two films. "Reservoir Dogs" beats this film in terms of style and characterization if not completely original. That said, this is a highly engaging film. It has a compelling central premise of a police undercover operative who not only has to fear the crooks he's infiltrating but his superiors who view him with contempt. There is action here for sure but it doesn't subvert the story. I recommend this film for any fan of Hong Kong action films but if a Mandarin edition becomes available check that out instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Blu-ray release of this Classic film
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 1, 2023
**Warning Plot Spoilers** This fully uncut Blu-ray release of "City on Fire" 1987 released by Kam & Ronson region A , features a high level correct aspect ratio and High Definition picture transfer & perfect audio presented in Cantonese True HD Dolby & Mandarin Dolby digital , though purists will want the option of a original Mono track, the audio on offer is IMHO far superior, plus correcly translated English subtitles for the main film only. for the m. There are only 2 extra/bonus features which are quite limited.1) Trailer for the film , Cantonese no English subtitles. 2) Interview, No English subtitles, with Cantonese Audio of a man talking played over visual clips from the film & the main theme song sang in Cantonese in the background. I assume this man talking is Ringo Lam the director, as a black & white photograph of a man behind a camera is shown at the start , I Goggled Ringo Lam to match the face up & the first set of Chinese Characters that appear on the right hand side of the photograph. This must rank as one of Chow Yun Fat & Danny Lee's best performances on the silver screen. I have seen reviews that say this is a rushed, rough and tumble early effort of director Ringo Lam , compared to his more sophisticated later work. But I feel that statement is unfair, as this is a in your face thrill ride from start to finish. Very influential film for Quentin Tarantino when he made "Reservoir Dogs" 1992.
Chow Yun Fat established as a star in John Woo's ultimate classic film "A Better Tomorrow" 1986. In this film made in 1987 Chow Yun Fat plays a undercover cop , who wants out of undercover duties, is given one last assignment before he can leave undercover. Another undercover cop is shown being stabbed to death on the streets of Hong Kong by a Triad Society when his cover has been blown away. He was about to phone Chow Yun Fat's uncle who is a high up police man Inspector Lau played by Sun Yeuh a veteran character actor. Inspector Lau's son was a police officer and died young , he puts Chow on the case as a underground gun supplier to infiltrate Danny Lee's jewellery store robbers. Watch the fantastic scene of Chow being introduced to the gang in the grave yard , very intense. After supplying the guns Danny Lee's Triad Society boss wants to recruit Chow and put him in on one of the Jewellery store robberies. Then he is physically beaten up by a police officer who is above inspector Lau , who Lau gets revenge on him in the final, exposing his underhanded techniques. You will have to watch the film to see Chow Yun Fat firing a gun to keep his undercover status when lines between being a police man and gangster get seriously blurred, and then literally puts his life on the line ( I will leave that cliff hanger) and the super bullet flying, blood soaked heroic blood shed final. I have left out quite a lot of the plot, but on the other hand have given you more than enough detail ( maybe a little bit too much) Highly recommend purchase , my other recommendations for Ringo Lam films would be: "Touch and Go" with Sammo Hung , his adventure in to the Martial Arts epic genre with "Burning Paradise" and another absolutely high level classic "Full Contact" again with the fantastic Chow Yun Fat , Thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars チョウ・ユンファ最高!
Reviewed in Japan on May 8, 2017

3.0 out of 5 stars Good movie, but no language options.

Pretty good movie. Lots of action and a good amount of comedy. Chow Yun Fat was good as always. My only major problem with this dvd was that it was only dubbed. No option for original language or subtitles. This was not specified in the details. Otherwise I would have given it another star.

3.0 out of 5 stars On The Lam
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 21, 2010
Well-made HK cops and robbers flick that is lifted from the average by Chow and Danny boy's essaying of roles they can play in their sleep and the kinetic direction of Ringo Lam. It is bloodier than the norm for this early period of Heroic Bloodshed and the expected scripting deficiencies which plague most of these films is not really a hindrance when you have Chow on the case. Reservoir Dogs fans will have a blast spotting how many scenes are ripped off from this formative crime thriller and there really is a lot of similarity and not just during the warehouse climax and de rigeur Mexican standoff. Lee and Fat really are prototypes for Keitel and Roth in QT's later critical hit and let's not pretend otherwise that such hagiography is the rich man's plagiarism. This film is not a classic HK staple compared with the real gold to be found in the genre and buyers beware that the Dimension Region 1 disc is dubbed and has had the soundtrack tinkered with before adding to your basket.
