The EOS R + 24-105mmm kit is replacing my 5D Mark III + 24-105mm kit.
The first thing you notice when you pick up the camera is that both the body and the native lens are noticeably lighter than the 5D Mark III kit. The body is very easy to hold, fits firmly in the hand. The LCD is bright and clear, even in daylight, and the touch controls are incredibly intuitive to use, you can tap to focus, navigate menus using your finger, pinch zoom, like on a phone.
The eye detection autofocus is especially helpful with wide aperture lenses like the 85mm F/1.4. Due to the very shallow depth of field, even a slight movement can throw the eye out of focus. You can easily end up focusing on the nose or ears with the eyes blurred. With the 5D Mark III, it was a challenge to get close shots with wide apertures right. The EOS R focuses on the eyes accurately pretty much every time. Out of the 100+ portrait shots I took over the holidays, less than 5 were out of focus. Even shots taken by others with no DSLR experience were focused perfectly, which I couldn't say about the 5D. As a bonus, eye detection works even with cats and dogs, as the attached photo attests.
Despite the higher resolution, the camera performs well at high ISOs. The attached photo was shot at ISO 4000, F/2.0, 1/60s, 85mm, at dim lighting. You will notice that color accuracy is excellent and noise is barely noticeable.
I love the control ring on RF 24-105 lens, which I programmed to adjust exposure compensation quickly. It is too bad that the control ring adapter was not available at the time when I bought the kit.
Since I always shoot raw, I appreciate the fact that there is a raw-only mode (no JPEGs) and images are saved at a more efficient compressed raw format. Despite the higher resolution, the .CR3 files are smaller than the Mark III's CR2s.
What I really miss on this camera is an analog mode dial.
As for the touch bar, I did my best practice and learn how to use it productively, but failed. I consider it a gimmick that I will likely never master.
Although I already have a GH5 for video, I did some experimenting with the video mode on the EOS R. One nasty surprise was that the SD cards I had, which easily handle 4K/10-bit video (150Mbit) on the GH5 were not fast enough for the Canon, even though in IPB mode the bitrate should be only 120Mbit. I need to stick with HD for now.
With the EF-EOS R mount adapter, all 7 of my existing EF lenses, even non-Canon ones, work flawlessly. I am really glad that Canon made the new RF mount backward-compatible.

Para compras de esta cantidad yo recomendaría hacerlas en una tienda física, donde puedas corroborar el producto frente al vendedor, y donde puedas directamente hablar con el encargado si hubiera algún problema con el producto. Les platico mi experiencia:
Cuando abrí la caja con mi novia en el interior venía una cámara Sony vieja con sus accesorios y en vez del lente venía un termo con forma de lente. Claramente fue una estafa de un comprador previo que reemplazó el producto y regresó el artículo a Amazon México, que no tuvo un protocolo meticuloso de revisión y me lo vendió a mí. La caja tenía los sellos cuando la recibimos, así que la persona que robó la cámara se tomó el tiempo de hacer el reemplazo con cuidado, a la vista no había nada raro, solo la etiqueta en la parte inferior se veía algo extraña, aún así era también de Canon. La sensación al darnos cuenta de lo que había adentro fue como si nos hubieran asaltado, de pronto ya no teníamos ni la cámara que compramos ni nuestros ahorros destinados a ese equipo.
Inmediatamente reempacamos todo e informamos a Amazon México de lo sucedido, agendamos una recolección que sucedería al día siguiente pero Estafeta no recogió el paquete, tuvimos que hablar con un agente de Amazon para volver a solicitar la recolección que sucedió el 1 de Marzo y de acuerdo a DHL el 2 de Marzo ya estaba en las instalaciones de Amazon México.
OJO CON LAS FECHAS, Amazon México dice en su página de ayuda que el reembolso de los artículos sucede de 3 a 5 días hábiles después de que lo reciben y que el dinero puede tardar hasta 15 días naturales en aparecer en tu cuenta.
Esperé al 4 de Marzo para llamar y confirmar que ya tenían el paquete en Amazon México, dado que en la página no aparecía como recibido. Me confirmaron que ya lo tenían y que había que esperar para la inspección del artículo.
Esperé al 10 de Marzo para llamar de nuevo, con más preocupación por que en la página aún no aparecía como recibido y en toda la información que hay en la página dice que corre el tiempo de reembolso a partir de que lo reciben, y pone como fecha límite de regresar el producto el 29 de Marzo de 2023, por lo que si se llegara esa fecha podría empeorar la situación si su sistema no lo registra como recibido y pasa la fecha límite. Me dijeron que no me preocupara y que no había ninguna nota de alguna anomalía con la devolución, que el reembolso seguía en proceso, que esperara 72 horas.
Llamé de nuevo el 14 de Marzo. La página seguía sin actualizarse, seguía diciendo "El reembolso se procesará cuando recibamos el artículo". Le hice saber de nuevo mi preocupación al agente de Amazon, que me aseguraba que tenían el producto, que no me preocupara. Pero yo no tenía más que la guía de DHL para asegurar que el paquete había llegado a su destino. El agente de Amazon me dijo que para mi confianza almacén me mandaría un mail confirmando que ya tenían el paquete en sus instalaciones. El mail nunca llegó y me fui una vez más con la indicación de esperar 72 hrs.
Llamé por cuarta vez el 18 de Marzo. La señorita que me atendió se escuchaba más segura de lo que estaba sucediendo, me confirmó que la página no se había actualizado pero que un día antes (17 de Marzo) se había concluido la fecha límite de revisión del producto por lo que podía de manera manual solicitar el reembolso y que lo recibiría de 5 a 7 días hábiles, máximo 15 días naturales por si hubiera problemas con mi banco. Por primera vez me enteré de que el reembolso no se había solicitado y que tenían 15 días de margen para revisar el producto, esta información no la encontré en ningún lado de la página de Amazon México.
Esta vez recibí un correo de la agente que me atendió confirmando la solicitud del reembolso.
Llamé por quinta vez el 22 de Marzo dado que no había recibido aún el reembolso y la página aún seguía sin actualizarse. Me atendió un joven que se mostró preocupado por la cantidad de dinero y me dijo que en casos donde el costo del producto es alto ellos no pueden directamente realizar el reembolso, que suele tomar más tiempo, y que solamente gerencia puede realizarlo. Me dijo que veía una solicitud de reembolso del 18 de Marzo y que escalaría de nuevo la situación solicitando el reembolso de nuevo para hacer presión sobre gerencia.
Es la primera vez que me informaban desde el 2 de Marzo (20 días atrás) que el costo del artículo era lo que estaba retrasando la revisión y el reembolso, de nuevo en la página no encontré alguna clausula que diera aviso que el reembolso podría retrasarse por el costo del artículo. Es lógico que suceda, pero aún así no esta bien que no haya claridad, en especial en compras de este precio.
Antes de colgar le pregunté al agente si había algo que pudiera hacer para acelerar el proceso (sabiendo ahora que dependía de gerencia y no de nadie más) a lo que respondió "Lo estás haciendo al llamar de nuevo" es decir, el hacer presión era lo único que podía hacer.
El 23 de Marzo recibí un correo de que el reembolso había sido emitido, (hoy 24 de Marzo aún no lo recibo en el banco), seguiré llamando para darle seguimiento a la transferencia. La página sigue indicando que aún no reciben el artículo.
Soy miembro Prime desde 2021, y compro de manera constante en Amazon México, por lo que pensé que podría haber preferencia para darle mayor agilidad a mi caso, lo cual no parece haber importado.
Al momento llevo 20 días con la cantidad de $55,579.00 flotando, sin poder disponer de ella, me dedico a la fotografía por lo que el equipo que compré era para realizar mi trabajo, no solo me afecta el no tener el dinero si no el no poder reponer el equipo de otro modo para laborar.
Todo hubiera sido menos pesado si Amazon México hubiera sido más sincero con el proceso y me hubiera informado desde un principio que habría retrasos por la situación y por la cantidad, del mismo modo no hay información en la página que pueda dar claridad acerca de lo que podría estar sucediendo con el reembolso, las fechas que vienen en la página de ayuda de Amazon México simplemente ya no coincidían con lo que estaba sucediendo. Si ellos consideran que por la cantidad las fechas de reembolso varían manera extraordinaria con su política, deberían de tomarse el tiempo de informarte que esta pasando.
Peor aún la preocupación de que el tiempo pasaba, la fecha límite de devolución se acercaba y su página no se actualizaba (ni aún se actualiza), dándome la sensación de que estaban haciendo tiempo para que no sucediera el reembolso pasada la fecha, pasé de confiarle a Amazon esa cantidad de dinero a sentirme inseguro de que estuvieran haciendo lo posible para no devolvérmela.
Aún si Amazon México se hace responsable y emite el reembolso uno como cliente no debería de pasar ansiedad y tal preocupación durante todo este tiempo por no saber que esta sucediendo en el proceso, que los agentes te digan que "Todo va bien" y que "Esperes 72 horas más" no ayuda a dar claridad
ni confianza.
El punto de referencia que tenemos los clientes para dar seguimiento a los procesos de Amazon es su página web, esta debería reflejar el estado en el que se encuentra su proceso de devolución.
Realicé esta compra en Amazon México y no en otra tienda por la confianza en el buen servicio que había recibido por parte de la tienda, ahora no siento esa confianza para realizar compras de estas cantidades. Una tienda de este tamaño debería tener un protocolo más efectivo para no afectar a sus clientes de esta manera.
Si compras algo costoso en Amazon revisa con lupa el empaque para ver si no hay algo raro con las etiquetas o con la caja antes de abrirlo por completo,por que Amazon no lo hará por ti.
EDIT: Marqué al banco el 4 de Abril dado que aún no recibía el reembolso y el banco corroboró que no había habido ningún intento de reembolso registrado. Me sugirieron levantar un acta, y ellos revisarán directamente con Amazon México que sucedió con el dinero, sin embargo el banco dice que puede demorar hasta 30 días naturales. Por ahora levantaré un acta en PROFECO y ver si Amazon México se decide a cumplir con su parte por fin.
