No, this guide won’t have every single quirky recipe from the past and this guide won’t have every cocktail you can think of. You may even find a few omissions whose absences seem like oversights (El Presidente, por favor?). But hey. For that, there are bigger books. Much bigger ones. And you’ll eventually need one of those if you are a completist or if your goal is to have something to turn to when a guest mentioned something you’ve never heard of before. But the list of cocktails included nevertheless is a broad and very efficient survey of the cocktail world. You’ll be covered and then some for beginning a journey into mixing drinks at home.
The recipes are grouped by base spirit, which is common. So, you’ve got your section for Rum, Whisk(e)y, Gin, etc. And this is the focus of the book. It’s mostly a recipe book. But, it’s format is much like a menu. Each recipe has a full page, beautiful photo to go with it. It’s easy to thumb through the pages, see something stunning, realize you’ve got the ingredients handy, and get mixing. There’s even a QR code for EVERY SINGLE RECIPE, that will take you to Steve’s YouTube channel for a video demonstration of how to make that particular drink! Of all the YouTube cookbooks I’ve gotten so far, no one has thought to do that. Brilliant.
But the recipes themselves. Are they good? No matter how many there are or how nicely laid out or demonstrated, none of that matters if the recipes themselves are unreliable. If you hesitate to accept the specs as Steve gives them and find yourself having to turn to Google or YouTube to compare against others. Being both a novice home-mixer and a novice cocktail drinker, I can’t attest to much here… but what I can say is that for me and my circle, every cocktail I’ve made from here (and I’ve made dozens) has been solid. If you’re a beginner like me and inquisitive, you’ll no doubt find yourself revisiting certain cocktails with more curiosity and skepticism. And some drinks are more basic and standard than others. If you’re mixing an Old Fashioned or a Rusty Nail, there’s only nit-picking to be done in terms of the exact ratios and choice of ingredients or secret additions or added flares or pedantry surrounding technique. But then there are the Mai Thai type ones where any recipe will send you down a rabbit hole of reading and cross-referencing. But, in all cases, I’ve not found a single recipe in the book so far that left me doubting the integrity of the source. I’d feel comfortable mixing up any drink from this book and serving it to even the most discerning cocktail aficionados, confident that what Steve gave me is a worthy representation of that drink.
There also is a great introduction section that goes over home bar basics: ingredients, how to build your home bottle collection, tools, techniques, it’s comprehensive in scope, and just deep enough to give you what you need to know to hit the ground running.
This is probably the best introductory, home cocktail guide out there. Just like a good cocktail, this book is balanced, with enough depth to carry everything, but not overwhelming, and with enough breadth to cover all the essentials
The recipes features are a great mix of classics and interesting twists/riffs!
It has QR codes to show you exactly how the drink is made. It also has 125 recipes where I would be surprised if anyone knew all of them.
