Bombshell: A Hell's Belles Novel Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 3,278 ratings

New York Times bestselling author Sarah MacLean returns with a blazingly sexy, unapologetically feminist new series, Hell’s Belles, beginning with a bold, bombshell of a heroine, able to dispose of a scoundrel—or seduce one—in a single night.

After years of living as London’s brightest scandal, Lady Sesily Talbot has embraced the reputation and the freedom that comes with the title. No one looks twice when she lures a gentleman into the dark gardens beyond a Mayfair ballroom…and no one realizes those trysts are not what they seem.

No one, that is, but Caleb Calhoun, who has spent years trying not to notice his best friend’s beautiful, brash, brilliant sister. If you ask him, he’s been a saint about it, considering the way she looks at him…and the way she talks to him…and the way she’d felt in his arms during their one ill-advised kiss.

Except someone has to keep Sesily from tumbling into trouble during her dangerous late-night escapades, and maybe close proximity is exactly what Caleb needs to get this infuriating, outrageous woman out of his system. But now Caleb is the one in trouble, because he’s fast realizing that Sesily isn’t for forgetting…she’s forever. And forever isn’t something he can risk.

New York Times, Washington Post & USA Today bestseller Sarah MacLean is the author of historical romance novels. Translated into more than twenty-five languages, the books that make up “The MacLeaniverse” are beloved by readers worldwide.

In addition to her novels, Sarah is a leading advocate for the romance genre, speaking widely on its place as a feminist text and a cultural bellwether. A columnist for the New York Times, the Washington Post and Bustle, she is the co-host of the weekly romance podcast, Fated Mates. Her work in support of romance and those who read it earned her a place on Jezebel.com's Sheroes list and led Entertainment Weekly to call her "the elegantly fuming, utterly intoxicating queen of historical romance."

Sarah lives in New York City.

This book has my heart. I usually get books from the library but I have read it so many times that I just had to buy it. I have read hundreds of books and nothing can top a Sarah MacLean novel.

This has been on my list since it was released and I’m so happy I found the time to listen to this! Mary Jane Wells is the premiere female historical performer in my opinion, and she surpassed herself this time!
Sesily is part of a girl gang of Victorian revolutionaries determined to change their world by ridding it of Men Behaving Badly. Sesily is the sexy lure while her cohorts sneakily steal secrets. Watching Sesily the whole time is Caleb, her sister’s BFF and the object of Sesily’s obsession. Except Caleb avoids being in the same country as Sesily most of the time. When Sesily and Caleb keep bumping into each other in the middle of the night, Caleb’s truth is revealed, and nobody could be more surprised than Sesily.
This book is laugh-out-loud funny, with Sesily and her friends getting into all kinds of mischief. Mary Jane Wells is truly the best narrator in the biz right now. I loved this book!

I have read every one of MacLean’s books and enjoyed all of them. Her latest, Bombshell, is no exception.

The best part of this novel was, in my opinion, the relationship between Lady Sesily Talbot, notorious scandal, and secretive tavern owning American Caleb Calhoun. Sesily is my kind of heroine. She’s intelligent, confident, strong, independent, and in touch with her sexuality. But what I loved about her even more was that she wasn’t reduced to her sexuality in this book. While other characters see her only in regard to her sexual appeal, Caleb doesn’t (and neither does the author). Sesily’s sexuality is an important part of her character, but it isn’t THE defining factor. Caleb loves Sesily because she is unabashedly herself, and we see him admire Sesily being fierce and fearless in a variety of ways throughout the book including in her sexual confidence. He doesn’t inhibit her, and when he doubts her, he promptly admits he was wrong to do so. Caleb isn’t quite as compelling to me as Sesily, but, again, the reason I really rooted for them is because he is wholly rooting for her. She doesn’t have to sacrifice any of her core values to be with him, and that’s the way he wants it.

The dialogue between Sesily and Caleb is fast-paced, witty, and truly delightful! The plot itself wasn’t as engrossing to me as some of MacLean’s other books, but the narrative arc was compelling enough and the relationship between Sesily and Caleb (and the steamy and well-written love scenes) kept me thoroughly engaged!

I’m very excited for the continuation of this series. Other reviewers have noted that the introduction of the rest of the Hell’s Belles girl gang and their prospective love interests was clunky or more obvious. Maybe it could’ve been done more with subtlety, but frankly, I don’t think the story suffered from their overt introduction. The other Belles were fascinating, and I really look forward to reading their stories. If anything, knowing their love interests now just has me more excited for their stories!

While I didn’t like Bombshell as much as I did the first novel in Rules of Scoundrels (my absolute fave series of MacLean’s), the Hell’s Belles gang gives me similar vibes to the Fallen Angel crew, and that has me very much looking forward to the rest of the Belles’s books! Overall, Bombshell is a truly wonderful addition to MacLean’s oeuvre. You can read it on its own, but without reading The Day of the Duchess first (where Sesily and Caleb meet), I think you miss important backstory that makes Sesily and Caleb’s story more compelling and their love more believable! Hats off to MacLean for writing another winner!

Finally, the book about the remaining Talbot sister! Sesily and Caleb had a tough time reaching their well-deserved HEA. They were instantly attracted to each other when they first met in one of the author's earlier books about one of the other sisters. However, not until this book do you find out that Caleb has been valiantly fighting that attraction and sexual chemistry for two years, escaping to America when the temptation of Sesily becomes too strong. Sesily made attempts to get through to Caleb on the rare occasions she saw him during those years, but nothing worked. It's not until very far into the story that we finally find out why Caleb felt he had to stay away from Sesily to keep her safe. Sesily is easily the most independent and strong-minded of the Talbot women, and that's saying something. She's become involved with a group of women who are secretly championing feminist causes and women in intolerable situations. Doing so often puts her in danger, but she isn't reckless, as Caleb initially assumes when he becomes aware of her activities because he's so keenly aware of her whenever they're in the same location. He is strong, honorable, and a protector to the core of his being. Caleb and Sesily argue a lot, but they are also a good match. He comes to perceive and appreciate Sesily as no one else ever has. Although he tries mightily to resist and thwart her efforts when his secrets are finally revealed and he is in serious trouble due to his past, she and her band of women help save the day. Although Sesily is my polar opposite, I liked her, I liked Caleb, and I liked them together.

Finalmente o livro da Sesily e do Caleb. Gostei muito da ideia das Belles, achei a Sesily uma personagem interessante, mas ainda quero a união das personagens da MacLean num projeto em comum, tipo os Vingadores desse universo que ela criou.

I love Sarah MacLean books and maybe that’s why I’m tougher on my scoring here. Really enjoyed the book and read it quickly. Loved the leading ladies strong women friends and the passion between the leads. However I felt that the leading characters relationship could have been explored further to really feel the personality attraction rather than all physical. There was just something lacking which is why I couldn’t give a 5 rating.
