I bought this tent mainly for exchanging at a surfing site. I tried the instant tent for the same purpose before, as I thought that since I am not doing real camping, I would want something easier to set up and easier to remove. Also in many surfing sites, tents are technically not allowed. But I soon realized the problem of instant tents for suring purposes – they can’t really stand in strong wind, something that is very common for perfect surfing places. So that’s why I switched to this heavy duty exchanging tent. So compared to instant tents, the pros and cons of this tent are very obvious. Pros: very solid and tough, easily stands in the strong wind from the sea. The solid frame also makes it easier to stand on the sand beach. Cons: very heavy, almost the same weight as my four person tent for real camping. And complicated to set up. The whole set up process is almost the same as what it takes to set up an old school camping tent. It takes me 10 minutes to get it done. And it’s safe to say that one would really struggle with it if they have no camping experience before. But both cons are ok for me, since I would always carry this tent in my trunk with my surfing gears, so I don’t really worry about the weight of it. And I am a very experienced camper, so setting up is no big deal for me as well.
In general, I would say this tent has very clear pros and cons. If you have a specific need just like me, you won’t be disappointed by the quality of it. But if you just want to find something that just gives you some privacy, and wouldn’t expect to use it in some extreme conditions, I would recommend the instant version of these tents, as weight and difficulty to set up would be the top concerns then.
