The better the wood prep, the better the final result. Minwax Preparation products are the first step to ensure your wood surfaces show their most beautiful colors and smoothest finishes. Start with Minwax Pre-Stain to prevent streaks and blotches by penetrating the wood to promote uniform acceptance of water-based stains and helps control the effects of grain raise.

If desired, apply stain such as Minwax Wood Finish Oil-Based Penetrating Stain or Water- Based Color Stains to bare wood surfaces following label directions. Surface must be dry and free of wax, grease, polish, any foreign matter, or old finishes in poor condition. Sand to a smooth, uniform surface and remove dust. Let dry completely.

Wait at least 24 hours before applying Polycrylic Finish over wood stain. Stir well before and regularly during use. Do not shake. Apply a thin coat of Polycrylic Finish with a high-quality synthetic bristle brush. Apply in one direction with the grain. Do not over brush. Let dry at least 2 hours then sand with very fine sandpaper (220 grit) to ensure an even finish and proper adhesion of additional coats. Remove all dust.

This long-lasting Protective Finish allows for easy soap and water clean-up, so you don’t have to stress about messes. Polycrylic is nonyellowing and low odor to provide lasting protection to your wood project and is a fast-drying clear coat that lets you get projects done faster. After final coat, allow 3 hours before light handling and 24 hours before normal use.

The clear top coat protects against scratches, scuffs and blemishes to protect the wood surface beneath. This clear sealer dries crystal clear and stays crystal clear, making it ideal for use over all Minwax Oil-Based and Water-Based Stains and colors, as well as all wood species including light woods like maple, ash and birch. The ultra-fast-drying protective spray coating allows for quick recoats and is also easy to clean-up the clear wood finish with just soap and water. This protective wood top coat not only protects the natural beauty of the wood, but offers an attractive, classic sheen for a modern and subtle look. It’s non-yellowing, non-ambering and low odor to protect your wood and provide lasting protection to your project. Application:

1. Surface must be dry and free of wax, grease, polish, any foreign matter or old finishes in poor condition.

2. Sand to a smooth, uniform surface. DO NOT USE STEEL WOOL. Remove dust with a damp cloth. Let dry completely.

3. If desired, apply stain such as Minwax Water Based Wood Stain or Minwax Wood Finish stain to bare wood surfaces following label directions. Wait at least 24 hours before applying Polycrylic Finish Spray over Minwax Wood Finish Stain.

4. Shake can vigorously for two minutes. Repeat for ten seconds after each minute of use.

5. Protect adjacent areas from overspray. Hold can vertically 12” from surface and depress button fully. Spray using an even, sweeping motion with slightly overlapping strokes. On unfinished wood, apply sufficient material to seal, open joints, edges and end-grain.

6. Apply a thin coat of Polycrylic Finish Spray to avoid runs and sags.

7. Let dry at least 30 minutes between coats, then sand with very fine sandpaper (220 grit) to ensure an even finish and proper adhesion of additional coats. Remove all dust.

8. Apply a second coat. For additional coats, repeat Step 7 before applying. Three coats are recommended.

9. After final coat, allow 1 hour before light handling and 24 hours before normal use.

I used this product to seal my completed diamond paintings. It's easier to use than many of the other sealers, since you didn’t need to wipe off the tops of the drills after applying it, and it doesn't dull the sparkle or crack or yellow, like some of the other ones do over time. It's a little more expensive than some of the other sealers, but worth it!

I did subtract one star because I think the half-pint size is overpriced...it's about FOUR times more expensive per ounce than the quart size! But the half-pint lasts quite a while (you can seal a lot of diamond paintings with it), so I'm afraid that, if I bought the quart size, it might go bad before I could get the value out of the larger size.

I got the clear gloss finish. One coat seems to result in a variety of sheens across the surface. Some areas were matte and others were glossy. A little light sanding between coats and you can build up a fully shiny surface. I like the feel of the polycrylic.

I did notice a difference between how I prepared the wood. The wood that was treated with Minwax high performance word hardener looked like the unfinished wood except the golden tones were more radiant. The wood that was treated with Minwax water-based Pre-stain wood conditioner darkened the natural color of the wood. A similar enhancement to the richness in color was observed with the Minwax water-based solid-color stain wood finish.

The product is easy to apply, easy to clean great for the DIY’er or the tradesperson.

I should have payed better attention, but was not expecting such a tiny can, since price wasn’t that low. It is true everything does look bigger in a picture and on tv. But quality of paint is awesome. Doesn’t leave the white residue and effect of matte is beautiful. Worked well on my stained/ black satin painted distressed fireplace mantle. It brought all the aspects together and took the sheen out. I like it.
