Utterly brilliant, no chips or cracks or bubbles. I believe it’s TEMPERED GLASS so it’s extremely impact resistant but the old straight into boiling water or pouring boiling things into them when cold ALL APPLY.
These jars are great I purchased 12. Unlike my next Kilner 12 set of 350ml, jars returns in progress, these jars are ALL THE SAME so the lid and band from one fits the other perfectly.
I extremely highly recommend these if you can get them for a reasonable price. I wanted more but every time I thought about it the price had been put up and is now just a week later 55% more than what I just paid and it’s a ost cheaper to buy singly jars???
That’s the review over. Now a thing about modern preserving glassware and people just don’t know.
Ok people, read reviews and complaints about the warnings pamphlet, don’t know what glasses there are, what’s used where and for why.
We have ‘everyday glass’ - Soda Glass - used in glass windows, glass jars at the store with your jam and pickles in, used everywhere where there is glass unless specifically stated. It’s cheap easy and plentiful. It also shatters when boiling water is poured into it when the glass is cold and we have all been trained not to do this. Thicker glass walls in the jar can help this to a degree.
No then came brand name PYREX that is extremely temperature stable and that’s glass is -Borosilicate Glass - and was developed in the USA and Europe independently at the same time. This glass is much more expensive to make but is extremely temperature stable and won’t thermal shock easily to the point of it being difficult to do at home. Borosilicate Glass used by Pyrex is now a bit of a scam as not all Pyrex branded stuff is borosilicate glass but just tempered soda glass and then made very thick, AKA my 500ml PYREX labeled everywhere measuring jug at the borosilicate price point. Borosicilate glass is ‘new’ very new only a hundred years old at most. This is important.
Now that’s not all there is a process called tempering that massively increases the impact resistance of Soda Glass by about 6 times or even 12 depending on the base glass and the manufacturer. There will always be good and bad stuff, cheap and dear. Basically the glass product is made and it’s ridiculously hot and then cold air is blown over all the items surfaces at the same time for about 3 seconds, as soon as it comes out of the moulding machine. This cools the surfaces only and very quickly and this pre loads a sheer stress in the glass between the 2 outside sides that very very quickly cooled and the slowly cooled insides. You don’t have to understand about sheer stress interaction planes and so on to understand that TEMPERING massively increases the impact resistance of cheap easy to mould and so on, glass.
Now how does all this magic effect you and why did NAMED glass manufacturers spring up that appeared to make magic ‘unbreakable’ glassware 200 years ago?
Right 200 years ago when Kilner started, there was only Soda Glass and there was no internet and no real data base of glass formulations that had known properties. Basically you couldn’t google up a list of formulations for various Soda Glass properties and choose a formula/recipe based on the desired traits tou wanted to emphasise. I say emphasise because it’s all Soda Glass and tweaks will just tweak certain things and not make a whole new glass type. So you just couldn’t do this. But say at Kilner then by default and luck and skill and experience and mostly experience found a formula that was superior and no lab existed where a competitor could buy a jar crush it and get it analysed so Kilner had the formula just for them. Kilner then also has smart people who linked events and ideas and casual observations and figured out that thicker glass jars seemed to not break from heat and impact as easily when Granny was preserving fruit on the weekend. So a superior formula dor ordinary Soda glass and thicker jars and where almost there. Then it was realised that defects like bubbles are really bad. Bubbles actually mean a thinner glass wall between the bubble and the jar side so it’s as weak as glass that’s just that thin. Tap wip a metal spoon and burst the bubble and crack the entire jar. So quality manufacturing with no bubbles is on the list.
So named glass manufacturer's has better formulas, thicker glass and the ability or skill or machines to make absolute defect free glass. THAT’S WHY NAMED GLASS MANUFACTURERS EXISTED. Now it’s because of nostalgia because anyone can do that easily.
So then borasicillate glass came out and people loved it but it shattered when dropped, of course. But people thought it was indestructible but it’s not except in how inviroments to thermal shock which was a very big thing and everyone was schooled in it. So thermal shock with its massive awareness wasn’t as much of a thing as it would have been. Methods like boiling hot sauce only get poured into boiling hot glass jars that was heated slowly in boiling water bath, and so on.
Then the USA safety in the home whatever you call those people did a study! That study was how many people are injured from glass breaking and how much glass actually breaks in a given year and how does it break. Sounds like no fun at all. So in the interest of wrapping this up the study found that, People were very trained in thermal shock protection of Soda glass so the use of expensive Borosilicate glass was nullified. Also found that glass in the home and injuries was from dropped or banged together glass breaking so from physical impact and shock.
So then to make the toughest glass for the home and WHAT IS USED NOW UNLESS SPECIFICALLY STATED is Soda Glass, then if it’s a physical impact use like glass saucepan lids, measuring jugs (grr me), mixing bowls, baking trays etc then this average Soda glass will be made to modern standards of quality and will be tempered making it incredibly impact resistant and the better brands should do a better job and use a slightly better glass to start making items that are a dozen or more times impact resistant. AND then through a lifetime of training and indoctrination we ourselves take care of the thermal shock problems through proper product handling and use.
So USA study found that dropped glass was a problem for the amount of breakages and injuries and not thermal shock so they fixed the dropping part and ignored the thermal shock part.
So Kilner glass is Soda Glass that’s thick, no bubbles or cracks and tempered.
Any glass manufacturer today can do that so named brands for jars and such is for visual appeal and nostalgic reasons. As long as you know the cheaper stuff is tempered and I truely don’t know if Kilner is tempered as it’s not mentioned but why else would the price be so high? 500ml Kilner preserving twist top is 6 times the price of a 500g/ml glass jar of garlic at the shop (my old preserving jars).
