Customers say

Customers like the performance, appearance and sturdiness of the bicycle. For example, they mention it's a very competent all-around bike, the brakes work really well and it'll do decent in chunky and rocky areas. That said, some appreciate the weight and handleability. That being said, they do complain about the derailleur being bent on arrival and the chain breaking out on the trails.

Customers are satisfied with the sturdiness of the bicycle. They mention that it is well-made, has excellent welds craftsmanship, and does decent in chunky and rocky areas. The quality components give it a smooth ride, and the gears/shifters are responsive and handle well. It looks like a good base frame bike to buy and then add some upgrades. The HYDROFORMED crafted so it's longer lasting, stiffer, and lighter. The bike has modern geometry and above average SRAM components.

Awesome Mongoose SALVO-HYDROFORMED frame. Not your typical Walmart Mongoose.
4 Stars
Awesome Mongoose SALVO-HYDROFORMED frame. Not your typical Walmart Mongoose.
This is not your department store Mongoose. Unlike the common Mongoose Ledge X1 & X2 (owned/sold both), the Salvo is Mongoose's low-key premium mtb and feels more refined compared to the Ledge-twins. However, it's a XC mtb-no more, no less. In stock form, it will do fine for the casual riders. For advanced mtb'ers, look elsewhere unless you plan to upgrade parts. Amazon had the bike on-sale for $1K. The frame is beautiful and it's HYDROFORMED crafted so it's longer lasting, stiffer, & lighter-but, also cost more expensive to manufacture compared to the regular machined aluminum frames. The frame has excellent welds craftsmanship & beautiful orange color. Let's be honest, the rest of the components are sub-pars except for the frame. I ditched everything but the frame, and replaced it with quality RockShox set/SRAM GX set/PNW components. I also installed a WORKS 2 degree headset. With 130mm RockShox Pike up front, HTA now is at 65.5-66 degrees. In stock form, it weighs a porky 36.5 lbs! After upgrades, the modified Salvo now weighs 29.5 lbs w/o pedals from stock. It now feels really light on it's feet. It also now has 130mm F/110mm R travel just like a Giant Anthem LOL. The rear triangle design does reminds me of the mid-2015's Trek designs. I love it!FYI, My other mtb is a Specialized Status 160, compared to it, this modified Salvo is very lightweight, poppy, & fun, that was the purpose of the built. It's home on flowing xc trails, fire road climbs, & I can ride all day without alot fatigue. Again, it's a XC mtb, so it sits more upright & feels more comfortable on long rides. It will do downhill fine, but it does not ride like you're on a cloud to the Status 160. It also does decent in chunky & rocky areas, but again, that's the heavier, durable, & cushioning ride of Status 160 enduro territory-go figure! That's why you should never have only 1 mtb LOL!!!CONCLUSION: It is pricey compared to similar equipped rivals due to its hydroformed frame manufacturing. IMO, the Mongoose Salvo requires aftermarket upgrades to be decent. I feel in love with the quality & craftsmanship after ordering one. I could of returned it back to Amazon, but I did my researches and found Mongoose Salvo was a premium model in oversea countries. I get compliments on the trails with it's current format and alot folks are shocked it's a Mongoose. Here in the USA, that "cheap Walmart bike" stigma will always haunt the Mongoose brand, but I do know that the Mongoose Salvo falls really far from that tree.*MONGOOSE/Amazon! Please bring the enduro Teocali here, please!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mongoose Daily Rider Review
Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2020
This review is for the Mongoose Salvo mountain bike, size large frame.

I purchased this bike to commute to lunch during work hours and for the occasional off-road riding.

The bike comes in a large box with a few parts requiring install such as: handle bars, front wheel, reflectors, seat and pedal wheels. Everything is wrapped and protected for shipping. It did not come with assembly instructions but did come with a nice owner’s manual. Installing the parts without assembly instructions was fairly intuitive. The package did not come with tools for the install. You will need a decent assortment of allen wrenches and a ¾” wrench to install the pedals. It took me a little over an hour to unbox and assemble. The allen screws appear to have lock-tite on them from the factory, that is a nice touch ensuring they won’t unscrew.

I am 6’-2” tall and weigh 180 pounds. The large frame fit me perfect. I would say a shorter person could fit on the large frame as well as the seat is lots of room for adjustment. The bike is fairly light which makes it nice to pick up and maneuver if need be.

I have never owned a geared mountain bike so the shifting gears depending on the terrain slope was new to me. Be careful when continually downshifting the gear for uphill riding, the chain will shift off the gears. This happened to me and it took some work to get the chain back on the gears. Proper understanding of the shifting and realizing there is second lever for upshifting will eliminate your chain and gear problems.

Overall the bike rides and feels great. It is very sturdy and the shocks really do a good job dampening the rough terrain. The front and center shocks are all adjustable to your liking. I see myself riding this bike for years to come. The front and rear brakes have some serious stopping power I might add.
I purchased the black color which has a semi-matte finish. It's sleek and a really good looking bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Bike
Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2023
After customizing, first, replacing the Tiny Micro Dental Floss seat😜, changing off road tires with hybrids,
taller stem, better reflectors, handlebar extensions, better grips, shortening the width of the handlebars. Bike was doing well, around 2,000 miles. Excellent brakes
Unfortunately, the chain broke out on the road. Waiting for a higher-grade chain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hitting the Trails like a Pro!
Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2020
Shipping was fast, but the box definitely incurred a lot of bumps and bruises. I was pleased to see I wasn't missing any components as there were a couple of holes in the box itself. The frame did sustain a few scratches in the same area. Wasn't happy about that, but they are minor and I am sure I will put on way more after riding it on the trails.

It looked like a good base frame bike to buy and then maybe add some upgrades, but I don't want to change a thing! Quality components give it a smooth ride. Gears/shifters are responsive and handle well. Aggressive tread also helps with climbing rough terrain. I haven't been able to take it on speedy downhills yet, but so far it feels very stable for what I have done.

Assembly wasn't difficult, but do follow the instruction manual. It gets a little confusing because the manual refers to some parts that do not come with the bike (not needed), so that can be a little confusing. I am a fairly handy person and I did not have any troubles with assembly. You will need a couple of tools. I used my Allen Wrench set and a adjustable wrench. Very excited to hit some more trails!

1.0 out of 5 stars Save Your Money
Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2022
Like the title says, save your money. Even with setting this bike up properly, it was bulky and components were subpar. For the amount of money the bike costs you can buy a used Siskiu or Marin full suspension that will provide a much more enjoyable biking experience. Nothing is worth upgrading on this bike because the base price is so high but everything needs to be upgraded, especially the power train. I took a huge hit when I sold this bike because no one wants this bike. I was lucky enough to find a novice that was fooled the same way I was before I purchased this bike. Price does not equal quality, I have a Walmart schwin that is better.
