Their is an aura around this album that I get that makes it rise above all the rest. It has the darkness of Sabbath yet the swag of the 80's hair metal bands(The good ones). Other than "Shot in The Dark" there is really no other song that Ozzy uses in his live sets, which is a mistake, having some monstrous songs like "Secret Loser", "Thank God for The Bomb" and the title track. Jake E. Lee is another subject that brings this album to new heights. He's mixed very well and not obnoxiously in forefront like Zakk Wylde (Which I don't mind), but brings a force of speed and melody that invites the listener.
1) The Ultimate Sin - 10/10 - Dark, heavy opener, killer track!
2) Secret Loser - 10/10 - Everything a great metal song can have is in this song! (One of Ozzy's best songs)
3) Never Know Why - 9.5/10 - Great riffs,solo's, powerful vocals.
4) Thank God For The Bomb - 10/10 - Great song for the times! Ozzy's sings with passion as always!
5) Never - 9/10 - Ozzy doesn't miss a beat along with his band. Very cool bridge into a melodic solo by Jake E. Lee!
6) Lightning Strikes - 9/10 - Another powerful song with classic Ozzy melodies. Catchy as hell!
7) Killer of Giants - 10/10 - Why doesn't Ozzy play this song? Amazing acoustic intro to a monstrous song! Beautiful
8) Feel Like You - 8/10 - The one song that every great album seems to have which isn't bad, just not as good as the rest. Great melodies from Ozzy.
9) Shot In The Dark - 10/10 - Need I say more?
Is it the voice of your laughter that echoes in vain
In the vessel of your sorrow and pain
It is the beat of a heart that you hear in your mind
Something's missing but you cannot explain
You've searched your soul for feeling
Over and over now over and over now
There is no use in dreaming
Over and over now over and over now
It is the chain that you're dragging
That was once your relief
That's like everything that's born to die
And the birth of a doubt that was once your belief
Is drowning in the tears that you cry.
Anyway the album still has a pop Metal feel to it, with short songs targeted for a Radio audience, but Ozzy isn't the Grateful Dead, he seldom ever lets his Musicians have a jam moment on an album. If you are looking to put the CD in and crank it up to 11, then Lighting Strikes is your best bet, it has some nice crunchy moments.
