The immensely popular blogger behind Little House Living provides a timeless and “heartwarming guide to modern homesteading” (BookPage) that will inspire you to live your life simply and frugally—perfect for fans of The Pioneer Woman and The Hands-On Home.

Shortly after getting married, Merissa Alink and her husband found themselves with nothing in their pantry but a package of spaghetti and some breadcrumbs. Their life had seemingly hit rock bottom, and it was only after a touching act of charity that they were able to get back on their feet again.

Inspired by this gesture of kindness as well as the beloved Little House on the Prairie books, Merissa was determined to live an entirely made-from-scratch life, and as a result, she rescued her household budget—saving thousands of dollars a year. Now, she reveals the powerful and moving lessons she’s learned after years of homesteading, homemaking, and cooking from scratch.

Filled with charm, practical advice, and gorgeous full-color photographs, Merissa shares everything from tips on budgeting to natural, easy-to-make recipes for taco seasoning mix, sunscreen, lemon poppy hand scrub, furniture polish, and much more. Inviting and charming,
Little House Living is the epitome of heartland warmth and prairie inspiration.

This book is packed with so much goodness; recipes, planning tips, and more. There's so much we can make from scratch and this guidebook makes it easier.

Having been a follower of her blog, I actually pre-ordered this book before it came out. I received it, glanced through it, and then it went to rest on the shelf with my other recipe books. I did notice immediately that it was beautifully photographed and well organized, but I just didn't have time to really go through it.

Well recently I broke my leg very seriously and suddenly found myself with a ton of extra time to read. As I'm going through it I am repeatedly amazed by the type of things she has recipes for. For example, there's a recipe for antibacterial cleaning wipes!! I buy these at the store all the time and even the generic brand is super expensive. I love the convenience of them, but I won't let my kids use them because of the nasty chemicals. Which means more cleaning for mom to do. This is not just a book with a few homemade lotion and food recipes, it is so much better. I had no idea that such a gem of a book was on my shelf; I wish I had dedicated some time to it sooner!

Besides recipes there are also helpful little 'money saving tips' throughout the book. Like the recipes, the tips are so simple and yet so genius. Many of these leave me wondering why in the world I didn't think of them myself.

Merissa is definitely an expert at homemade recipes of all sorts. I don't know how one woman could have come up with so many wonderful recipes but I'm so glad she decided to share them! Probably the best thing about this book is that it is genuine and has heart. As another reviewer mentioned, she doesn't just share her knowledge she also shares herself. I think that really pulls the book together and makes it actually interesting to just sit and read.

This book has a lot of handy ideas for a variety of issues. I used it to make my own foaming hand soap. Also liked the homemade pudding mix recipe

I’m a connoisseur of books and this was a great one to add to my collection. I love the authors story and all the recipes. I’ll recommend you buy the hardcover though (for more protection), mine had water damage when it arrived (I got the soft cover). I think just from drawing moisture ( I live in Oregon). A hard cover would probably prevented that. I’m keeping my damaged book though because it’s such a pain in the butt to send it back. I live really far out. But I would totally recommend this book to anyone.

This book is totally amazing it gives life everything you need to make things simple again. The author of this book creates a home and neighbor atmosphere for you to experience in her writings. I do not think that I have ever in my 62 years enjoyed a book as well as this one. I now have a new order for Christmas,Birthdays, Wedding Gifts, House Warming and Off to College you must go.....GIFTS! I have this book virtually dog eared I have read it so many times. Friends have requested I give them the recipes or zerox this or that. I tell them buy the book and nope mine is not a loaner. I give my acquaintances the site address so they can go on-line unless i am planning on gifting it to them or theirs....I mean the book Little House Living: The Make Your -Own Guide by Merissa A Alink. I can personally tell you I have followed this young lady and her friends for years she is the hi-light of may day when her emails, face book or her short notes respond to my comments on-line. Out of all amazon...reading...this book is the one that keeps giving! It shares life in the simplified way bringing a smile to my face and new discovery every time I read it. This book is given 5 stars a thumbs up and has turned this lady into a repeat customer so that my family, friends, co-works, church members and even the post master can retrieve some of the lost traits of canning, cooking and home making as it was in my grand mothers days. Please do yours and yourself a favor order this book today. I wish there was a volume II or III or even IV to follow up with.

This book is stunning in its scope and simplicity. Rich with content, easily adapted to any family's tastes/portion sizes, and full of wonderful, time saving ideas for healthy meals in a fast paced world. Substituting ingredients is easy: prewashed quinoa for rice, sprouted spelt flour for all purpose, whole wheat pasta for regular pasta, etc... No matter your family's eating style or budget, you'll find something here.

I also love that learning this process has allowed me to convert some of my own time-honored recipes into mixes. Now when friends beg for my cornbread recipe (depending on how good the friend is, lol), I can hand over a mix AND the recipe. I can't wait for Christmas this year. I LOVE it when a book isn't merely recipes, but instruction, and something that helps me in my life in general. This book is definitely one of those.

The body care and household recipes are also excellent, especially the honey body wash. The ONLY problem I've found is that I don't have nearly enough jars, lol, no matter how many I buy! Too fun! I obviously highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb recipes to make and save money at the same time! A fabulous odessy to simple and frugal living!

It is an excellent reference for the frugal and simple life. Includes good recipes for making instead of buying things like healing salve, shoe and foot spray for smelly feet, chocolate chip cookie mix, handmade bread, baby lotion and so much more. The author has lived through tough times and taught herself how to 'make' and do. She even has gluten free and dairy free recipes. There are recipes for the first aid box/cabinet and fruit recipes. I will be busy making things while saving money, too! Thanks, Merissa A. Alink!
