Voger writes one of the best accounts of this era of North American Mainstream Comics.Industry and academic input make this an easy but informative read. It maps out so many known and obscure conventions of the period from Cheekcake comics to the rise of the anti-hero! We are reminded of the liberation of women in the industry to the artists/writers as stars finally providing them more freedom and renumeration. It has many masterworks like Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark knight Returns & Sin City to Alan Moore's & Dave Gibbons's twisted Watchmen. Additionally, the book also covers indie auteur Maus by Art Spiegelman. It even highlights Scott McCloud's books on comics theory: who of course was inspired by the late Will Eisner's twho was the progenitor with his hree seminal comics manuals. The layout is almost as fun as a comic with lots of images and text in panels and bubbles! Like the Dark Age it documents serious adult stories in a fun and engaging way. More than ever we need to read this awesome account of the grim n gritty!
