This is a fascinating story of a group of animal activists attempts to rehabilitate wolves to the Scottish Highlands. Like the locals and the farmers who opposed the idea, I was unaware of the good that wolves can do in a wild environment. The story is full of interesting lessons on how wolves hunt and their family groups.
I had never heard of "mirror-touch synaesthesia' a rare condition which the lead character had and was intrigued by how this impacted on her life. My only criticism is that the book came to an abrupt and fanciful end which let down the rest of the story.

This was a beautifully written book with an intriguing mystery plot. The focus on wolves was excellent -- I learned so much from reading Charlotte McConaghy's descriptions of them and loved the way they were "characters" in the story. The basis of the tensions between the various individuals and groups was fresh and kept me reading. The central mystery was carefully plotted, and the final resolution was unexpected and satisfying. Loved it!

I have to admit, to begin with I wasn't sure about this one. I am now keen to read Migrations and hope that I enjoy it just as much.

There is so much I could say about Once There Were Wolves but I don't want to give too much away. It is a beautifully written, atmospheric novel, rich in details and complex characters. I felt the pain and fear of the town, the delight of the researchers and the frustration of many many characters. The main character is a tough one to love but her heart is big and in the right place.

What you need to know about the story is this:

Inti Flynn leads a team of researchers who are trying to re-introduce wolves to the Scottish Highlands. She has moved to town with her younger sister who has suffered a trauma and Inti's life is her sister Aggie and the wolves, she will do anything to protect them. The town is not happy, worries that the wolves will target their farms. So when a local farmer is found dead she knows that the wolves will be blamed and she can't have that. How far will she go to protect them?

This is a fantastic and page turning story that will stay with me for a long time. I urge everyone to pick this one up. Heads up though, it is violent and there are some disturbing scenes involving both animals and humans.

There is more to this story than just wolves. It is a heartfelt story of correcting past mistakes, reintegration wolves into Scotland for environmental/ecological reasons, I learned a lot about wolves that I never knew, the story itself is a fiction mixed with facts. Charlotte did her research, which put us into a very interesting storyline. I loved it. I am looking forward to her next book.

Once There Were Wolves is a profoundly beautiful book, exquisitely written. It is about nature, including human nature. I have always loved wolves, but came to an even deeper respect for them through Charlotte McConaghy's wonderful understanding of them. Like any tale about humans, horses, and canines there is deep, wrenching sadness, and a soufulness that stays with you even when you think that you have recovered from reading this marvellous tome. But somehow you are better for it. I recommend it most highly to anyone with a heart.

Ths book IS exceptional, compelling writing, wolves (love wolves), how re-introducing apex predators that should be there benefits the whole eco system, but also domestic violence and it's effects, love in different forms, and choices - we all have a choice how we respond to things. At the same really gripping thriller story that keeps you reading to find out what happens. Just read it,
