Product Description
All-analog Marriage of Harmony and Rhythm
From the manufacturer
The Moog Subharmonicon is a versatile analog labyrinth of subharmonically derived synthesis and polyrhythmic sound, equally suited for losing oneself and simultaneously finding oneself.
Subharmonicon is capable of complex sounds and patterns, yet is incredibly simple to use. With 2x VCOs, 4x Subharmonic Oscillators, 2x 4-Step Sequencers, and 4x Rhythm Generators, Subharmonicon creates a rich harmonic kaleidoscope that divides into itself until everything that is up becomes down.
Moog Subharmonicon Semi Mod Polyrhythmic Analog Synthesizer
A semi-modular polyrhythmic analog synthesizer designed for the exploration of sequences that unfold & evolve over time, spiraling through 6-tone subharmonic chords & organic polyrhythms.
Subharmonicon’s unique approach to music-making is inspired by the innovative ideas on electronic instruments and experimental music that emerged during the 1930s and 1940s. Combining music and math, these early avant-algorithmic concepts laid a foundation for our modern exploratory practices
Moog Subharmonicon Semi Mod Polyrhythmic Analog Synthesizer Features:
Subharmonicon is a semi-modular polyrhythmic analog synthesizer that employs a 6-tone sound engine and multi-layered sequencers to explore the world of subharmonics, polyrhythms, and the unique relationships they create.
Moog Subharmonicon Semi Mod Polyrhythmic Analog Synthesizer Features:
Subharmonicon’s characteristic sound starts with two analog VCOs and four Subharmonic Oscillators for a total of six powerful sound sources. Each subharmonic tone is mathematically derived from one of the two main VCOs, giving the resulting chord shapes a beautifully coherent quality. Onboard quantization lets you dial in perfect intervals every time with selections for multiple tuning systems. Choose from contemporary Equal Temperament settings, the heavenly intervals of Just Intonation, or the unlimited freedom of no quantization at all.
Moog Subharmonicon Semi Mod Polyrhythmic Analog Synthesizer Features:
Animating Subharmonicon’s distinctive chord shapes is done through a polyrhythmic pair of 4-Step Sequencers. Each sequencer is clocked by any or all of four Rhythm Generators that output mathematical divisions of the master tempo. Layer multiple Rhythm Generators on top of each other to create complex polyrhythms and discover inspiring new patterns and styles. Delve into Subharmonicon’s dual Envelope Generators, Moog Ladder Filter, and analog VCA to call up dynamic articulations ranging from lush pads and blurred edges to percussive plosives and ritualistic rhythms.
Moog Subharmonicon Semi Mod Polyrhythmic Analog Synthesizer Features:
Although no patching is required to start creating, exploring Subharmonicon’s modular patchbay unlocks worlds of possibilities as you make novel connections and plug into new ideas. The 32-point 3.5mm patchbay can be patched into itself, expanding Subharmonicon’s onboard capabilities, or interfaced with Mother-32, DFAM, and other external Eurorack-compatible gear (MIDI Type A adapter included for DIN to 3.5mm MIDI input). Use as a standalone synth with included +12V DC power supply or simply remove the front panel to install into any Eurorack system.

I will say this is an excellent synth for beginners. Mainly because it is so compact, and the limitations on the front panel force you into really understanding signal flow, how to use and modulate your oscillators and it even comes with some presets.
The build quality is just superb. It’s a bit heavy but it just feels fantastic. The knobs are like butter with just the right amount of resistance and it’s just a very playable synth. Great for sound design and baselines.
One thing worth mentioning is it doesn’t have a hold or arpegiator built in. But this is great when paired with your computer. Simply send midi in and you can do much of this through your pc/Mac. The real sacrifices you make with this is for the compact size.
The sound quality is great. Classic moog filter that just feels great. Be sure to read into the additional features with the companion software but I think you’ll get a few weeks easily just using it by itself.
The keybed is small (but I think this is the point) but you can easily extend this by plugging a midi keyboard into it... it’s pretty darn impressive for the size of the unit.
If you want something with more features and voice versatility you are going to have to sacrifice studio space and go for the 37 or the matriarch, but I really loved what I could get out of this thing for the size.
You can update all the presets to whatever you want with the downloadable software. Just make sure you have a usb cable long enough to reach the unit so you can always take advantage of the computer based work flow.
My only real complaint is I really wish they would have added a hold/drone control so you can just dive into notes, but if you add a 10 second release, it’s still pretty close.
The multi drive on this thing is just delicious. Use it to push all your oscillators and give them just a blanket wrapped gritty warmth that doesn’t sound distorted. Just blows my mind.
Also will note; turn your oscillators and multi drive down and bump up the master volume...they still sound beautiful when not being pushed.
If you are looking for more versatility and control on the unit itself you will need to look into something bigger, but for as compact as this is (in synth world) it’s a pretty amazing and beautiful sounding machine.
Pair this with the matriarch and you practically have a full band.

For those looking to get their feet wet with semi-modular synths, this is the fun box for you. Really rich sound that ranges from soft and gentle to raw and tearing. A lot of patch potential for such a small synth. Very enjoyable hands-on experience.
For those looking to expand their gear with something from Moog for the price of a single eurorack module, look no further. 1 VCO, 1LFO, 4 step Moog ladder filter, VCO mod, 13 button keyboard, 12 patch points, AD envelope. Thought it would be eclipsed by my 2nd and 3rd synth acquisitions (Neutron, Model D) but it remains an integral part of my flow. What it does, it does best.
(The Hammond is gonna have to wait...maybe forever.)

And it sounds like a dream!
It’s got two functions: firstly, a simple synth - two oscillators, each with two linked sub-oscillators; mixer controls; simple envelopes for the filter and the amp, and the classic Moog low-pass ladder filter with that squelchy resonance we all know and love. Secondly, it has two little sequences - only 4 steps in each - but these can be coupled to any of four rhythm generators so that the two four-note sequences are fractured and stuttered, and can resonate or interfere with each other. It’s a bit like a delay effect but more musical and fully analogue!
This little box’s true innovation comes in the quantize feature. This constrains the frequencies of the oscillators so they are always on a whole note (or semi-tone). This means when you start the sequencer the intervals you hear are always interesting. You still need to seek out rewarding patterns by tuning the sequencer steps, or tuning the oscillators themselves, but this is part of the fun of using an analogue synth: you need to explore and experiment.
There’s a comprehensive patch-bay too, with 32 inputs and outputs, so you can experiment sending the rhythms and frequencies to modulate the filter, the clock, the frequencies themselves and so on. It works very interestingly when paired up with the Mother-32, sounds astonishing through the Moog Grandmother’s spring reverb and I’m looking forward to seeing how it can connect to other semi-modular gear.
It’s costly but I know I will get years of inspiration from this. The lack of an on-off switch is a pain: you either need to wrench the plug from the socket or remove the power cable from the back of the unit. I would have replaced some of the ports - perhaps an output for all six oscillators/subs is a bit much, I would have preferred a envelope decay patch or a mult to mix CV signals.
The manual is informative but also lovely in itself and 5 little patch cables are included to get you started. Even the cardboard box it came in begs to be kept safe somewhere.
It was well packaged by the supplier, arrived much faster than expected and the supplier (Bax music) remembered to include a UK power adapter for me (only US and European styles in the box).
