The pills are small and easy to swallow. NOW does a great job with there packaging where it is easy to open and the supplements are solid.
As to the reason for the K2 and D3:
Vitamin D3 directs the absorption of calcium from your intestines into the blood. Vitamin K2 takes it from there, directing that calcium into your bones.
So with that synergy and the fact a large percentage of the population is deficient in D3, its a no brainer to take both.
My muscle pain, cramps, chest pains increased. I started having GI issues, my A1C number jumped from 6.8 to 7.5 within a few weeks of starting statins. When I saw my sibling get a heart attack due to clogged arteries as well as hardening of arteries due to calcification I knew I was next. I started to research how one can reverse hardening of arteries and the one thing that was recommended was K-2. I ordered one bottle and started taking K-2 once a day along with Guggul (twice a day) while I continued the statin. Within 4 months, my cholesterol is absolutely normal - my bad cholesterol is low, my good cholesterol is high, my total cholesterol is in normal range. I have stopped taking statin and continuing the K-2 and Guggul. My aim is to maintain my low cholesterol but also fix my A1C.
Along with K-2, I am now taking the following - Guggul, ReMag, Probiotics, Ashwagandha, Triphala, Garlic. Ginger. Turmeric, Karela and Inulin. I believe that every thing is connected in our bodies. We need to fix our gut, detox our liver, maintain blood sugar and take care of all inflammation in our body. I am also drinking moringa tea now. Hopefully, in coming months I can write that my A1C has become normal and get off of Metformin as well.
Updated on 8/27/2020
I became a bit lax about my health in 2019. When your numbers and health becomes good you ignore the fact that you got there due to lifestyle changes and that these changes need to be adhered to for life.
My recent cholesterol numbers (without statins or K2) was 166. Not so terrible, eh? But without K2, my HDL dropped to 39 and LDL went up high. And this is the interesting thing I have seen - without K2, I cannot move my HDL up and lower my LDL - even though total cholesterol is not high. Even statins only help to lower overall cholesterol for me but not improve HDL/LDL ratio. This may be purely genetic because coronary artery disease runs in my family on both sides. I will not make the mistake of stopping K2 again. K2 keeps me healthy but without it I revert back to high HDL in less than a year.
I have increased my K2 intake to 1 tablet twice a day for the next few months. In the morning I am having it with Guggul(Himalaya brand). At night I am also adding Zinc, D3 and Magnesium(ReMag). This particular combo has shown marked improvement to energy levels, sleep, aches/pains and inflammation fairly quickly, even during my recent COVID bout in March. In about 4-5 months I will drop the morning dose.
NOW and several other brands use a proprietary, patented formulation called MenaQ7 that says it sources the MK-7 vitamin from naturally sourced MK-7 produced from fermented chickpeas. They also make a similar product that's sourced from soybeans but is "soy free" after it goes through a purification process. They extract the actual K-2 MK-7 vitamin itself from fermented chickpeas or soybeans (depending on the product); but the finished product does not actually contain any of the chickpea or soybean protein or whatever -- just contains the MK-7 vitamin itself that was extracted from the fermentation process.
From what I've been able to determine, the proprietary patented MenaQ7 formulation that NOW and many other brands are using to supply the active ingredient vitamin is a natural product -- despite being patented. I'd prefer something that's not patented, because the fact that it has a patent implies that it's not really 100% natural. I spent many hours of frustration trying to research this issue, as the search engines don't necessarily give us easy access to unbiased information. But from what I gather, the patented MenaQ7 formulation assures the supplement companies that the MK-7 they use to manufacture their product contains a reliable dose-strength of the vitamin. Somewhat like getting USP verification to show the product reliably contains a certain strength or guaranteed amount.
According to statements made by NOW and also by the company that makes MenaQ7, the MK-7 here is natural, all-trans, the most bioavailable version, and is not synthetic.
In the future I may well decide to simply get my K2 directly from real food sources instead of spending money on supplements. And not give the matter any more worry or thought. Organic sauerkraut is said to be a good source of K2. But when I tried to find how much K2 is present in sauerkraut, the search engines gave wildly different results that varied from 2.75 mcg per half cup to 10 mcg per cup to 10 mcg per tablespoon. What a shame we can't get credible information and for sure can't depend on our corrupt FDA or Big Tech search engines for honest credible information. Disgusting. There are other sources of K2 like European hard cheeses made from grass-fed cows, but not the stuff made here in the U.S. from factory-farm dairy cows. The cows need to be pasture raised and grass-fed to produce the vitamin K and they don't produce the same quality nutrients when they're housed in stalls and fed grains like corn. Natural soybean natto may be the best source of K-2, but most people find natto too gross to eat. For now I'm okay with using these bottled, commercially produced NOW MK-7 capsules since I've already bought them.
FYI for people who don't like to swallow big pills: these NOW brand MK-7 capsules are small and very easy to swallow. Also: They're made from a vegetable source capsule and are Halal, Kosher, vegetarian and vegan.
