The Never King (Vicious Lost Boys Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 41,185 ratings

The stories were all wrong — Hook was never the villain.

For two centuries, all of the Darling women have disappeared on their 18th birthday. Sometimes they’re gone for only a day, some a week or a month. But they always return broken.

Now, on the afternoon of my 18th birthday, my mother is running around the house making sure all the windows are barred and the doors locked.

But it’s pointless.

Because when night falls, he comes for me. And this time, the Never King and the Lost Boys aren’t willing to let me go.

NOTE: The Never King is a reimagining of Peter and Wendy. Characters have been aged up for this darker, grittier version. If you like your enemies to lovers romance with hot, ruthless, morally gray love interests, you’ll enjoy The Never King and the Lost Boys. You can expect hate kissing, fighting, bickering, and ‘touch her and I’ll unalive you’ vibes. Book one ends on a cliff.

The book is pretty good, I love the description of Peter, and the other characters. Wendy is a unique character some will like her some won’t since she is nothing like the original Wendy. This book has s*x parts more often than any other book I’ve read, it’s very sexual! The entire story could’ve been described in more detail this book only has 196 pages with 32 chapters instead of 206 like the book description says. It’s definitely a fast read and I would recommend it to anyone who likes the story of Wendy and Peter Pan but to not get your hopes up on the romance so much bc it is a slow burn. Trigger warning for any who are new to dark romance like I am! All in all the book suits its genre very well.

This entire series was amazing. Dark and appealing, a retelling like no other. This is a top series for 2024 for me! The characters are well build, the world is amazing, and no fluff, just amazing writing. Nikki catches you from word one on page one 100% recommended!

Brought to you by OBS reviewer Heidi

Most people are excited for their 18th birthday, but not Winnie Darling. Her mom has been telling her for years about how Peter Pan comes to kidnap the Darling women on their 18th birthday. He brings them back eventually, but they are never the same. They come back broken and a bit crazy. Her mom has always been insane so Winnie didn’t believe her until Peter Pan came for her.

Peter Pan is losing his magic; he can no longer fly or do most of the things he used to be able to. And, his island is dying too. His shadow was stolen by a Darling and with it the majority of his magic. So, now he takes the Darling women on their 18th birthday to see if they have inherited the secrets that will reveal where his shadow is. Unfortunately, when the fae queen, Tilly, roots around in their Darlings’ brains, it changes them, damages them. But Peter must continue trying … to save himself, the Lost Boys, and Neverland.

I don’t typically read the re-imagined fairytales, but this one sounded interesting so I decided to give it a try. It did live up to that expectation. I found the dark Peter Pan quite interesting. What I didn’t expect was the sexual focus in this book. Winnie was the daughter of a prostitute who had been sleeping her way through the boys in her high school. And, she found Peter and the Lost Boys and their resolve that they don’t sleep with the Darlings to be a challenge she couldn’t refuse.

Once you get past Winnie trying to bang everything that moves, the book was actually pretty good though. I found the storyline interesting and it put my memory of the traditional Peter Pan story to the test. If you like your fairytales a bit depraved and a lot dark and brooding, you should give this one a try, if you don’t mind the sex that is.

“She needs to know…there are no white knights here.

Just monsters.

And I am the worst one.”

I actually really liked the Lost Boys, especially the twins!

This is a short book and I flew through it! I’ll definitely be picking up the next one in the series soon and taking another trip to Neverland!

I was initially drawn to this series because of the covers (they're just fantastic, aren't they?), but what was inside surprised me, pushed my limits (in good ways!), and sucked me in. I'm not a person who binge-reads series. Even if the whole series is out, I like to space them out to make the series last. Not this one. I read all four books back to back to back to back. Nikki's writing is perfection, her characters are deliciously dark (what can I say, morally grey is my favorite color), and her world-building is lush. I'm currently on my third read/listen in a year!

Winnie is feisty. Pan is sinful. The Twins are deliciously twisted. Vane has edges. In the end you will have your favorite, but you will love them all. If you're okay with reverse harem, you're okay with dark, and you're okay with kinky, then check these books out! I promise you won't be disappointed! Beware that each of the first three books ends on a cliffhanger so if that's not for you, you know.

If you like audiobooks, I HIGHLY recommend listening to the audio version as the cast is phenomenal and Shane East is PERFECT as Pan!

I LOVED this book series! Each book delves into the characters & makes you fall in love with each one! The story line is amazing & nothing compared to books with similar characters. Each book leaves you wanting more from Nikki & as such caused me to read all of her other works! I can't wait for more Darling!

There's definitely some raunchy scenes that are probably too much. I'm still processing how I feel about it. I mean, I think her childhood trauma has caused her to doubt her worth. She values her looks and sexual prowess above all else. The storytelling is good and the plot is an interesting take on Peter Pan. I like some of it, but some of was cringy. The violence is a little too casual and pointless to be believable. I felt like certain violent scenes were meant to be arousing, for the FMC and for the reader. But, I just felt like her abnormal reactions (getting turned on) were rooted in generational trauma. That kind of made me feel sad for her. However some of the steamy scenes were good. And I liked what the story could be with just a little tweaking.

This felt like it was only a hundred pages. I read it so fast and it was an exhilarating, interesting story.

This whole series was absolutely fantastic! There was great storyline and a good deal of smut as well. While I wish they were longer, it was nice being able to devour the series quickly because I could barely put it down!
If you love a good fantasy with smut and a good story to boot, you won't be disappointed!

I enjoyed the book, the twists on the characters were interesting. The plot was fun and drew you right to the next one in the series. I enjoyed seeing the evolution of the characters through the series.

Me apeguei bastante a escrita da Nikki. Por fim, os hots são maravilhosos! Eu amo um harém reverso e esse aqui 10/10!

Amei MUITO!

5.0 out of 5 stars Spicy. Dark. Retelling. Need I say more?

4.5⭐️
After everybody and their mom talked about this book on booktok, I finally decided to read it, and it's totally worth the hype.

This book was my first spicy dark retelling, and I definitely want more of that! It's like reading a story you know but from a different, hidden, spicier angle. And let's be honest, it is way better than the original like that 😉

The only reason I gave it only 4 stars, is that the storyline felt a little rushed to me. It was my first novella, so maybe it's just that, but I didn't always understand some of the decisions the MCs were making. Like, I asked myself multiple times "why on earth is this the response to what just happened".

Overall, the book is really good, the spice is on point, and I'm definitely diving into the second one right now!

I loved Nikki St. Crowe's version or Neverland. Oeter Pan, the Lost Boys, and Winnie Darling's universe.
This first installment sets the decor of a deliciously dark tale. It's mysterious and intriguing, steamy and dangerous. I can't wait to know more.
BUT...
The writing style is shallow, and so are the characters' actions. Considering the number of people who have read this story, I expected a mindblowing reading experience. I am still waiting. Let's hope the next book will be more convincing in these aspects.
