We got the spider handle style, which is great for space savings. It allows us room to put a small trash can in the bathroom next to the toilet. We have 3 people using it, and have emptied it twice (probably because we're putting toilet paper inside it instead of in the trash can). When the toilet is "full", the handle can be hard to turn. I'd imagine the regular crank handle would be easier, and may let you go a little longer before dumping and putting in new media. I say "full", because it's not like it's really filling up much.
We use coconut coir, which has been great so far.
We've got a 4 and a half year old using it. It's a little tricky for him to sit on, so we just have him pee in a bottle and dump it in the toilet pee bottle. Be careful you don't let it flow onto the trap door. Our first load had a slight, but noticeable smell when I emptied it (not in the camper, EVER, just once I took it outside to dump and refill).
For the kid and wife (who's 5'2"), it's a little too tall. Even at my 5'10", it's not a comfortable height. We use a 7" Squatty Potty (https://www.amazon.com/Squatty-Potty-Original-Bathroom-Toilet/dp/B00ESKVN7W/ref=sr_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1468807025&sr=8-3&keywords=squatty+potty). We probably could have gone with the 9", especially for the kiddo, but the 7" is doing the trick.
